Driver Flees After Smashing Car Into East Oakland Home

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A family had a close call inside their East Oakland home Monday afternoon when a car plowed through the front of the house, coming to a halt partway into the living room.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. on 90th avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, a couple blocks from Castlemont High School.

The homeowner, who was still too shaken up to talk on camera, said normally her mom and young son would be sitting on the couch in front of the very window the car crashed through.

Luckily, they got up to go to another part of the house a short time before the crash.

Neighbor Angel Ortega could barely believe their eyes.

"I was flabbergasted. The whole car -- almost to the trunk -- went into the house," said Ortega. "It was crazy."

Oakland police are investigating the cause of the crash, but said the driver ran away from the scene before they arrived.

"I heard that he booked it. He just ran away," said Ortega. "He didn't stay or nothing."

No one inside the home was hurt, but house was severely damaged. The front window was shattered and the wood framing splintered.

City officials yellow-tagged the home, declaring it unsafe to live in until repairs are made.

The homeowners were allowed to retrieve some of their belongings and say they feel blessed no one was injured.

"It's a living room. You just don't think something like that is going to happen -- for a car to go through these walls," said Ortega.

So far, police have not released a description of the driver.
