Golden State Warriors Players Donate $75,000 To Fire Relief Effort

OAKLAND (CBS/AP) -- The Golden State Warriors players and coaches have pledged $75,000 to help relief efforts for the deadly Oakland warehouse fire that happened only a few miles from their home arena.

Star guard Steph Curry said he and his teammates have been devastated by the deadly Ghost Ship warehouse fire in a building near their home court at Oracle Arena.

"We are all devastated by the recent Oakland fire that claimed so many lives and affected so many others," he said in a video on twitter.

Draymond Green also said the players wanted to express their gratitude to the first responders and those who were involved in the heartbreaking task of searchers for the remains of the 36 victims in the burned out building.

Separately, the franchise already donated $50,000 to the Oakland Fire Relief fund. The team made the announcement Wednesday before playing a rivalry game at the Los Angeles Clippers, and the players also offered a public service announcement providing condolences and also thanks to authorities and first responders.

"As a team that calls the Bay Area our home, we are all devastated by this tragedy that took place right in our community," Green said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with those that have lost their lives, and our sincere condolences go out to their loved ones."

The Oakland Athletics also joined in the fundraising, initially pledging to match donations from fans up to $20,000 for Oakland fire relief on crowdfunding website YouCaring.com. The response was so great that the team raised the amount to $30,000. By 8:30 p.m., the page showed over $417,000 had been raised by more than 3,000 donors.

A separate YouCaring campaign started by Gray Area Foundation For the Arts, a Non-Profit Organization supporting art and technology for social good has also raised over $500,000 for the victims of the fire.
