2-Alarm Blaze at Belmont School Gym Forces Evacuation of 50

BELMONT (CBS SF) -- A fire caused about 50 people to be evacuated from the Carlmont High School gym in Belmont Saturday but the blaze was extinguished with no injuries, fire officials said.

Firefighters and police officers responded to the high school at 1400 Alameda De Las Pulgas around 5:55 p.m. after getting a report of smoke.

They traced the smoke to the roof above the boys' locker room, according to fire officials.

As the firefighters attacked the 2-alarm blaze, police officers evacuated people who were at a playoff for an adult basketball game.

The cause is under investigation, with a possible connection to roofing work done earlier in the day, fire officials said.

The main part of the gym wasn't affected and damage to the boys'

locker room is estimated at around $100,000, fire officials said
