Facebook now stands to reap as much as $18.4 billion from the IPO, if the extra shares reserved to cover additional demand are sold too. The offering values the company at around $104 billion.

Speaking after an owners’ meeting in New York, Selig said there’s no timetable for resolving Oakland’s dispute with the San Francisco Giants. The Giants are preventing the A’s from building a ballpark in San Jose, which is part of the Giants’ territory.

Asked whether he would approve a move by Oakland, Selig said “it just depends on where they’re moving to.”

Those remarks put South Bay baseball boosters in a pessimistic mood.

“It’s clear that any other sites would be outside the Bay Area, and it would be a shame,” said Santa Clara County Assessor Larry Stone, an outspoken proponent of bringing the A’s to the South Bay.

Wolff has never publicly declared any intention to move the team outside the Bay Area, and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan remained confident the team would stay in the East Bay.

“It’s a question of who can build a baseball stadium in time for the end of the A’s lease, and I think at this point Oakland’s in the best spot. We have the funding, we have the place, we can do it on time,” said Quan.

A group of local business owners stands ready to buy the team or help finance a refurbished stadium at the Oakland Coliseum complex or another East Bay site.

Quan added the Coliseum was situated on prime real estate for a new stadium because of its proximity to Oakland International Airport, Interstate 880 and Bay Area Rapid Transit.

“We have the best location, maybe in the nation right now, for a baseball stadium,” she said.

Bloomberg News says HP is mulling 25,000 job cuts. All Things D, a technology blog, estimates the purge will jettison 30,000 jobs. Both reports cited unnamed people familiar with HP’s plans.

Hewlett-Packard Co. declined to comment Thursday.

The Palo Alto company ended its last fiscal year with nearly 350,000 employees. Based on that, HP is considering a 7 to 9 percent decrease in its workforce.

Analysts estimate a payroll reduction of that size would save HP more than $1 billion annually.

The job cuts could be announced next Wednesday, when HP is scheduled to report its quarterly earnings.

Officers called to investigate a domestic disturbance in a residence on the 2700 block of Ritchie Street just a few blocks from MacArthur Boulevard surrounded the home when it was determined the suspect had an outstanding warrant.

“We did have three people and one child come out of the residence for their safety,” said Officer Johnna Watson, spokeswoman for the Oakland Police Department.

Police initially believed the suspect was wanted for a homicide, but learned during the hour-long standoff that the warrant stemmed from a home invasion robbery earlier this year. Details about that crime were not immediately available.

Watson said the suspect was not inside the home when officers finally entered it to search.

Officers were dispatched to the Eastmont home around 9:45 a.m. and cleared the scene shortly before 11:30 a.m.

The governor’s chopping block includes plans to cut money for the court system as part of his laundry list of expenditures that will be affected.

People are already standing in line for one to three hours to pay a simple parking ticket. You might not be thinking of cutting court costs until you’re affected and standing in one of these long lines.

Then you come to find out about all the surcharges that have been added on to your ticket, including court construction and security fees, and it ends up doubling or tripling your fine.

Nonetheless, the judicial system is taking a hit and has been for a while. If these cuts go through (and they will, let’s face it; this is basically a one-way street hearing) you’ll see more reductions to the judicial system.

As for a solution to California’s piecemeal approach to the solving the budget deficit, there doesn’t seem to be one. We believe in the cliff approach to budgeting and democracy, where it’s all or nothing.

While the chief justice will address these cuts, it remains to be seen whether or not she’ll mention the half billion dollars the courts spent on a statewide computer system that went nowhere. I wouldn’t expect too much discussion about the $60 million courthouse they bought and built in Alpine County or the $1 billion one planned for San Diego either.

The move was retroactive to Sunday and landed Inge on the DL for the second time. He started the season on the DL with Detroit with a strained left groin. He signed with the A’s as a free agent after the Tigers released him.

Inge is hitting .227 with four home runs and 17 RBIs in 11 starts at third for Oakland. Overall, he’s hitting .188 in 20 games.

Rosales was on the opening day roster for Oakland and appeared in one game without an at-bat. He was hitting .277 with two homers and 19 RBIs with Sacramento.

The database’s Vice President Daren Bloomquist said on a statewide level, April foreclosures were down 30 percent compared to the same month last year. Nationwide, he said rates were at their lowest since July of 2007.

One trend he said is that lenders are increasingly agreeing to do short sales instead of foreclosures.

“Let the homeowners sell the property for less than what they owe, in effect kind of forgiving part of the mortgage,” Bloomquist said describing the trend.

He added that it’s better for both the market and the neighborhoods.

“They get a new homeowner in that property right away. A homeowner who is taking care of the property, mowing the lawn,” he said, adding that it cuts down on foreclosure ghost towns.

Another research firm said Thursday that an increase in April home prices in the San Francisco Bay area is the region’s first annual gain in nearly two years.

DataQuick said Thursday that the median price for new and existing houses and condominiums in a nine-county region was $390,000 last month, up more than 8 percent from a year earlier. It is the first annual increase since September 2010.

April sales soared more than 13 percent from last year to nearly 7,700 homes.

DataQuick says buyers who have been sitting on the sidelines are moving to take advantage of lower prices and low lending rates.

Nonetheless, more than 20 establishments with facial detection cameras will go online Friday night with the app called SceneTap.

The cameras will be used to determine the approximate age, gender and number of people going into participating bars.

The start-up company then uses the data to provide real-time information about what’s going on at the bars through its app.

One of those participating bars is Polo Grounds, a new bar near AT&T Park, that’s partnering with SceneTap as a promotional tool.

Polo Grounds General Manager Janine Gallagher addressed the privacy concerns, saying no one’s face will ever be shown anywhere or recorded. She added that if the camera becomes uncomfortable for patrons, it would come down.

“The general public will only see how busy the bar is and the ratio of male versus female,” she said.

Patrons seem intrigued by the novelty of the app have said it could be used practically to see if there’s one bar you’re more interested in going to than another.

SceneTap is already used in Chicago and Austin.

The reason Warner Brothers is doing this is to promote their three-disc Blu-ray 70th anniversary edition of the film along with an illustrated e-book on the movie.

But Facebook has other motives. When you go to their page to download the app, you’ll notice pitches for all sorts of other films. It’s really an opportunity for them to make it known that they’re open for business when it comes to renting movies.

KCBS Tech Report:

Facebook actually has allowed users to stream movies for a charge for a while, but a lot of people don’t know that. It may or may not be a coincidence that this campaign comes two days before the company’s IPO.

This also begs the question of how soon will it be before we start seeing Facebook on our TV’s. The trend is growing for the convergence of computers, TV, smartphones and iPads. I think Mark Zuckerberg would have Facebook on our toothbrushes if he could figure out how.

“I can’t figure out why they waited so long, and obviously Drew Brees can’t either,” John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. “I’m not talking about the last month or two, I mean, the Saints have been through a lot with their bounty-gate and all that stuff, but they knew this was coming.”

Brees hasn’t participated in voluntary training with the club, and the team’s first off-season practices start next week.

“That’s probably what they’re arguing about – not necessarily how much you’re going to pay him, it’s going to be how much you’re going to guarantee him and how long the contract is going to be,” said the former coach.

Madden said he expects Brees to stay with the Saints, but nothing is for certain. “We’ve learned that lesson years and years ago, when Joe Montana wasn’t a 49er, you know, that it could happen to anyone. It happened to Johnny Unitas. It happened to Joe Namath.” (6:50)

The first suspect is wanted in connection with a string of robberies that started with a robbery at a bank in the 300 block of Clay Street in the Financial District at about 11:30 a.m. on April 30.

That man is also believed to be responsible for several other San Francisco bank robberies, as well as one at the Bon Air Shopping Center in Greenbrae on May 14. He is described as a white man between 40 and 50 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 160 to 170 pounds, police said.

He was last seen wearing a sun hat with a wide brim and a black hooded sweatshirt. He typically hands the bank teller a note demanding money, and pulled out a handgun during one robbery, according to police.

In one of the robberies, he was assisted by a second man. That robbery happened around 3:15 p.m. on May 12 near Chestnut and Fillmore streets in the Marina District, police said.

The second suspect is believed to be missing three fingers from his right hand and two from his left hand. He is described white, between 45 and 50 years old, roughly 5 feet 5 inches tall and 165 pounds. During the May 12 robbery, he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored jacket, police said.

In an unrelated bank robbery series, investigators are looking for a black man in his 40s who has robbed several downtown banks. He is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs between 160 and 180 pounds, and was last seen wearing a black, curly wig and eyeglasses, police said.

The first robbery in that series occurred in the block of Front Street at about 10 a.m. on May 10, according to police.

Iowa Republican Senator Charles Grassley has written a letter to the head of NASA about what he calls “troubling allegations” about planes owned by Google executives at Moffett Field a former U.S. Navy facility now owned and operated by NASA Ames Research Center.

Senator Grassley writes those executives pay $3.7 million a year to use the airfield and he questions whether that is fair market value.

KCBS’ Chris Filippi Reports:

The Iowa Republican also raises concerns that the planes housed at Moffett are rarely used for scientific missions and that the executives maybe buying jet fuel from the government at a discount.

John Simpson with the public advocacy group Consumer Watchdog said according a report they put out a year ago, they found Google was getting “absolutely preferential treatment by NASA,” and asked Congress to look into the matter.

The planes are privately owned by Google executives under a separate holding company called H211 LLC.

An executive with H211 said the company pays above market rent for hangar space and its planes have been involved in more than “150 scientific missions”.

He also said the company is only allowed to use fuel provided by a Defense Department contractor.

25-year-old Michael Sanchez was in critical but stable condition at a hospital. San Jose police Officer Jose Garcia said it was a miracle Sanchez was found unconscious but alive Tuesday.

He was last seen on May 8, the same day that investigators said his car was towed after a single-vehicle rollover off Highway 101 near Hellyer Ave.  No one was in the car.

California Highway Patrol officers searched for the driver in the immediate area for about an hour and gave up. Witnesses had reported seeing a man walk away from the scene.

Sanchez’s family reported him missing when he didn’t show up for a funeral last Thursday. Detectives found out from the CHP that his truck had been in a crash days earlier.

Detectives returned to the crash site Tuesday and found the man in a dense thicket of brush and trees between the freeway ramps.

The Celtics captain put in 24 points in Boston’s 101-91 Game 3 victory over the 76ers in Philadelphia, putting his knee injury behind him and getting aggressive when it came to pretty much every aspect of the game.

“Whether I shot the ball well or not, everything I was going to do was being with aggression,” Pierce said.

Aggressive might be an understatement. Pierce was in attack mode early on, even if his shots weren’t falling. Early in the first quarter, he missed four shots from close range, but it was the fact he fought for the three put-backs in the paint that showed he was determined to make a difference after scoring just seven points in Boston’s Game 2 loss.

He continued to go strong to the basket, following up his early misses with two ferocious dunks. Pierce finishing with nine points in the first 12 minutes of the game. He ended up hitting six of his 17 attempts from the floor, but did most of his damage at — and getting to — the free throw line. After just two trips to the charity stripe on Monday, Pierce found his way to the line 14 times in Game 3, scoring 11 of his points at the line.

He made it known to all of Philly when he was making his way to the line, following each drive to the hoop with an aggressive scream that would make Mel Gibson’s “Braveheart” jealous.

“Everything I was going to do was going to be aggressive because they were really collapsing on me on the down-screens, on my jumpers,” said Pierce. “I just tried to get to the hole and I was able to get to the line; able to get to the rim a number of times. It’s something I have to continue to do.”

“Paul is just a grinder,” head coach Doc Rivers said following the win. “He really is. You look at him at times and you wonder, ‘How is this guy getting open?’ He just has great fundamentals. He never does it with speed. He just knows how to play basketball. He’s a throwback guy, that he knows how to play basketball. We jokingly call him our ‘professional scorer’ and that’s what he is in a lot of ways.”

“[Pierce] played great for us tonight,” said point guard Rajon Rondo, who scored 23 points of his own while dishing out 14 assists. “Paul has been struggling scoring, but he has been doing the intangibles. On those [first-quarter] drives, he didn’t get some calls early in the game and thought they were fouls, so he went out and was aggressive and finished strong.”

Pierce had been just 5-for-20 in the series in the first two games, but helped the Celtics send a message as they took a 2-1 series lead. While he only added four assists, he credited the team’s ball movement for getting the offense going.

“Our offense finally came alive,” Pierce said. “We moved the ball. We knew that’s what we were going to have to do to score 100 points.”

“We just wanted to come out and establish who we are as a team,” Pierce said.

They certainly did that. Now they just need to keep it going on Friday night.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Kevin Durant scored 22 points and rattled in the go-ahead basket on a baseline runner with 18 seconds left, and the Oklahoma City Thunder scored the final nine points to rally for a 77-75 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals Wednesday night.

Oklahoma City trailed by seven with 2 minutes left before surging back with a series of defensive stops by its stars to take a 2-0 lead.

Game 3 is Friday night in Los Angeles.

Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum scored 20 points apiece for the Lakers, who came up empty on their last six possessions after Bynum’s hook shot made it 75-68 with 2:09 remaining.

After struggling throughout the second half, the Thunder suddenly came alive after Scott Brooks called timeout following Bynum’s basket that gave Los Angeles its largest lead of the game.

James Harden drove for a layup before Durant used his height advantage to reach up and tip away a pass from Bryant, who he was guarding. Durant ran out for a right-handed dunk at the other end before Russell Westbrook forced another turnover by aggressively challenging an outlet pass to Bryant along the sideline.

Harden made the next stop, blocking Bryant’s jumper on the next Lakers possession and getting a layup in transition off it to cut the deficit to one in the final minute.

Bryant couldn’t connect again, this time on a 3-pointer, to give the Thunder the ball back with the chance to take the lead and Durant was able to make it happen.

Steve Blake missed a 3-pointer from the right side with about 5 seconds left after Metta World Peace couldn’t get the ball to Bryant on the inbounds play. Durant was then fouled with 0.3 seconds left and made his first try before missing the second on purpose – failing to hit the backboard or rim for a violation.

The Lakers got a desperation try but World Peace’s long pass for Bynum was intercepted by Harden.

Westbrook added 15 points for Oklahoma City, which matched its lowest scoring total of the season but still gutted out the win.

Historically, the loss makes a huge difference. Los Angeles is 29-12 when splitting the first two games of a seven-game series and has lost 17 of 19 when falling into a 2-0 hole. The Lakers’ last comeback was in the 2004 West semifinals against San Antonio.

The Thunder have won all nine of their series after leading 2-0, dating back to the franchise’s days in Seattle.

In a game that was nip-and-tuck throughout, the Lakers started inching away early in the fourth quarter while Westbrook was on the bench.

Bryant drilled a jumper from the left wing and Blake followed with a 3-pointer before World Peace hit one of two free throws for a 69-63 advantage with 7:27 remaining – the Lakers’ largest lead to that point.

Westbrook returned then but only provided the briefest of sparks for the struggling Oklahoma City offense, and Bynum’s second straight basket – on a left-handed hook shot at the left block – made it 75-68 with 2:09 to play.

Until that point, Oklahoma City had made only 7 of 27 shots in the second half while committing eight turnovers.

After getting ripped apart by the Thunder’s pick-and-roll attack and giving up 119 points in Game 1, the Lakers made it an emphasis to put up more resistance in the rematch and it showed. Matt Barnes shuffled back and forth around three Nick Collison screens to contest Harden’s jumper and preserve the Lakers’ 22-21 lead after one quarter.

The Lakers’ defense was at its best just after halftime as they got out of a 48-45 deficit by holding Oklahoma City scoreless for the first 4 minutes and allowing just two baskets in the first 8 minutes. But Los Angeles still couldn’t create any sort of a cushion and Westbrook’s wide-open 3-pointer from the left corner – after World Peace airballed a similar shot on the opposite end – had the Thunder back within 57-56 with 3:31 left in the third.

Notes: The NBA on Wednesday fined Devin Ebanks $25,000 for actions related to his Game 1 ejection and Bynum $15,000 for failing to speak to reporters Tuesday. Bynum, who has had recent disciplinary issues within the team, talked at the Lakers’ morning shootaround Wednesday and called it a make up for skipping the previous day. “I think he’s learning. Is he going to be a perfect citizen the rest of his career? I don’t know,” coach Mike Brown said. “He’s bound to make mistakes. I think everybody makes mistakes.” … World Peace has said he supported Scott Brooks to become Sacramento’s coach back in 2007, when Brooks had been an assistant under Eric Musselman. “Little does he know, if I would have got the job, I was going to ask for him to be traded,” Brooks joked. The 18-year-old man was found shot at 8:21 p.m. in the 1000 block of Walnut Woods Drive along with another man who was found assaulted in the same location, police said.

Police have not identified a motive. Lt. Loyd Kinsworthy said there’s no indication as to what sparked the incident and that detectives were on the scene and would be investigating all possible leads.

Both men were transported to a hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The gunshot victim was pronounced dead at around 3 a.m. The assault victim’s injuries were less serious and he’s expected to survive, police said.

No arrests have been made and no suspect information was immediately available.

The shooting victim’s name has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.

It worked twice, and the Eastern Conference finals are all even, as a result.

David Clarkson scored a tip-in goal off Adam Henrique’s shot 2:31 into the third period to break a tie and lift the Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Rangers that squared the series at one game apiece on Wednesday night.

“It’s a very hard building to play in, and 1-1 sounds much better than down 2-0,” Devils captain Zach Parise said. “We’re happy. We would have liked to have snuck out of here with two wins, but it didn’t happen.

“We’ll take 1-1.”

For the third straight series, the Rangers are wondering what went wrong in Game 2 after they took the opener. They stressed how important it would be to grab a 2-0 lead, which would have been their first two-game edge in this postseason, but didn’t provide the necessary effort to get it done.

New York was riding high after its 3-0 series-opening win on Monday night, but now has relinquished home-ice advantage again.

“You need to improve as a hockey team every game,” said succinct and disappointed coach John Tortorella, who declined to say what areas were deficient.

Game 3 will be Saturday in New Jersey.

Clarkson built off the momentum created by Ryan Carter’s deflected goal late in the second that tied the game, 2-2. Ilya Kovalchuk had given the Devils a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal in the first. Defenseman Bryce Salvador added two assists, and Martin Brodeur stopped 23 saves for his 108th playoff win.

Clarkson has three goals in this postseason, and every one has been a winner, including the clincher against Philadelphia in Game 5 of the second round.

“Mr. Clutch? I don’t know about that,” Clarkson said. “I’m going to skate up and down and finish the checks and just bounce off people. It’s just a great feeling to be able to contribute. To get a tip on that felt pretty good.”

New Jersey had 26 attempted shots blocked in Game 1, five more than they got through to goalie Henrik Lundqvist. The Devils cut the blocks to 16 on Wednesday and managed to get 27 on goal — two more than New York.

“That team blocks so many shots,” Clarkson said. “It’s unbelievable how many. I think we found a way to shoot it and get sticks on it, and definitely that was big for us.”

Marc Staal and Chris Kreider scored power-play goals in the second for the top-seeded Rangers, who received 24 saves by Lundqvist.

New Jersey got even at 2 when Salvador wound up for a shot at the blue line and fired a drive that Carter — with his back to the net — brilliantly deflected past Lundqvist with 1:51 left in the second. Marian Gaborik stood up straight in front of Salvador, but didn’t drop down as many of his teammates have to try to block the shot. For that, he was pinned to the bench by Tortorella, even through New York’s power play in the third.

Gaborik returned to the ice with 8:40 remaining as the Rangers pressed to tie.

The Devils kept the pressure on the Rangers at the start of the third and wiped out the good work the Rangers displayed in the second.

“It was a much different reaction when we went down by a goal than it was in the first game,” Parise said. “We didn’t change the way we played, and I think that was a big difference. We were comfortable with how we were playing.

“All I think they got was really on their power play.”

After spending much of the first trapped in their own end, the Rangers rebounded to erase their early deficit and briefly take the lead thanks to the previously inept power play.

With Alexei Ponikarovsky off for interference, Staal fired a shot that sailed wide of the net and struck the back boards before popping back in front and pinballing into the net off Salvador and Brodeur at 2:23. The goal was originally credited to Derek Stepan, who was in front, but the puck managed to miss him both on the way toward the net and on the bounce back.

“I saw most of the pucks, but the Rangers came out hard,” Brodeur said. “They were around me a lot, and there were some bad bounces. It’s such a tough place to play sometimes here. There are bad bounces, and the boards are terrible.”

Staal nearly netted another moments later when he ripped a drive that Brodeur had to lunge fully to his left to snare with his glove.

Kreider, the rookie from Boston College, scored for the second straight game to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 12:19. Anton Stralman let go a shot from above the right circle that ticked Kreider’s stick and fluttered past Brodeur for the rookie’s fourth goal. He had to wait to get it because it was first given to Stralman before being changed during a commercial break.

But that was hardly the longest delay of the night. Before Kreider’s power-play goal, the action was stopped for about eight minutes as arena workers struggled to get the door to the Devils’ penalty box opened. Travis Zajac stood patiently as he waited to have a seat in the box. He even managed to laugh as did New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer and the usually stoic and agitated Tortorella.

Zajac, who first was sent to the Rangers’ box, stayed in New Jersey’s sin bin for only 1:47 before Kreider scored the Rangers’ second power-play goal of the night.

New York registered the first six shots of the period before New Jersey had its first about eight minutes in, but the teams were even at 17 through 40 minutes.

Lundqvist had a bit of glove magic of his own midway through the second when a shot by Anton Volchenkov was deflected by Kovalchuk but tracked and grabbed by Lundqvist.

The Devils got their elusive first goal of the series, and the all-important lead in the game, when Kovalchuk connected on the power play late in the first period.

After Brian Boyle was sent off for slashing Parise, the Devils continued their puck-possession prowess in the Rangers’ end. New Jersey moved the puck all around the zone in search of a clean shot that could get past the diving New York defense and perhaps challenge Lundqvist, who made 21 saves in the series-opening win.

Marek Zidlicky curled with the puck to the center of the blue line and slid a pass down to the left circle to Kovalchuk, who calmly and patiently drifted in and snapped a shot up and under the crossbar in the upper corner of the net for his sixth goal of the playoffs and fourth on the power play.

“We had to keep going to the net, and I think we were doing some good things,” Clarkson said. “We’ve been playing some good hockey and we’ve got to continue to do it. That is a big win for us.”

The Devils didn’t record a shot on goal until 6:01 in when Patrik Elias put a wrist shot in on Lundqvist, but New Jersey finished the first period with an 8-5 edge in shots — despite having six more blocked by the Rangers.

Whether Brodeur was kidding or not about wanting Rangers to be injured by blocking shots, the home team wasn’t deterred from getting in front of drives. New York forward Brandon Prust was doing a bit of a dance in front of the dangerous Kovalchuk, trying to deny any potential drive, even though he was defending without a stick.

“We have to try to get in lanes,” Rangers captain Ryan Callahan said. “Try to limit their time with the puck. If we do that, they are not going to have time to shoot.”

When Kovalchuk finally scored later in the period, he let out a big yell — part celebration and an exclamation of relief — as he skated in front of the glass behind the net.

“We have built some momentum,” Brodeur said. “And now, we have to try to take that into our building, and make our building a tough place to play.”

NOTES: The Rangers were 10 for 61 (16.4 percent) on the power play in the postseason before Wednesday. This marked the second time they netted a man-advantage goal in consecutive games, but the fourth time they scored two in a game. … The Devils returned defenseman Peter Harrold to the lineup and sat rookie Adam Larsson. Harrold replaced Larsson in the lineup late in the season and started the first nine postseason games. Larsson played in the previous five games.

The Giants’ story of missed opportunities is costing them dearly at this early stage.

Jaime Garcia matched his career high with nine strikeouts, David Freese hit a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals gave manager Mike Matheny a victory against his old Giants team with a 4-1 win Wednesday night.

Buster Posey hit a tying RBI single in the sixth against Garcia (3-2) for San Francisco, which missed multiple scoring chances yet again in what has been the biggest downfall for this bunch.

The Giants were 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position and are 6 of 37 (.162) in such situations in three games so far this homestand.

“Tonight was probably our worst night, I thought, the at-bats with runners in scoring position,” San Francisco skipper Bruce Bochy said. “We’re just getting too anxious, too aggressive and really chasing pitches. Their pitcher did a great job. He knew that and he let the guys expand the zone.

In a matchup of the last two World Series champions, the Giants didn’t do enough to back Bumgarner (5-3). He lost his second straight start following a five-start winning streak on a breezy Bay Area night featuring a hovering mist above the field.

Pinch-hitter Skip Schumaker added a two-run double in the eighth for the Cardinals, who improved to 13-7 on the road.

Bumgarner had his eight-start home winning streak snapped, a run dating to his last loss here on Aug. 4, 2011, against the Phillies. The lefty missed a chance to move closer to Ron Bryant’s streak of 10 consecutive home victories in 1972-73.

“I want to try keep them from scoring as much as I can, no matter what kind of lineup we have,” Bumgarner said. “I don’t want to go out there and give up runs. Tonight I just had a tough time.”

Garcia, who pitched a three-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Giants on Aug. 22, 2010, in St. Louis, had another memorable performance on the mound—his nasty off-speed stuff keeping the Giants guessing.

“He had it right from the beginning,” Matheny said. “He gets going like that, and it’s going to be fun to watch him.”

While he allowed nine hits in 7 1-3 innings, Garcia didn’t issue a walk for the first time this year and threw an efficient 92 pitches. The lefty also struck out nine San Francisco batters on April 9, 2011.

He calmly worked out of jams.

The Giants squandered chances in the early innings. San Francisco had baserunners reach at least second base in the second, third and fourth innings, stranding runners at third in the second and fourth.

“It was a really tough lineup and place to play, and I was able to stay in control of the game,” he said.

Slugger Carlos Beltran missed his third straight game for St. Louis with a sore and stiff right knee, but he could be available in Thursday afternoon’s series finale against his former club. Beltran spent the second half of 2011 with the Giants after a trade from the New York Mets.

St. Louis took the lead in the first when Rafael Furcal scored on Allen Craig’s fielder’s choice. Furcal and Freese each had three hits. Freese connected for his eighth home run with a shot into the tunnel area in left field with two outs in the seventh, then doubled in the ninth.

Freese also singled in the fourth to snap an 0-for-17 funk, helping the Cardinals win consecutive games after they avoided an 0-5 homestand by beating the Chicago Cubs 7-6 on Tuesday.

“I’m not looking at it like I’m finally getting breaks, because I’ve been terrible the last week,” Freese said. “It’s not like I’ve been lining balls, this and that. I had a rough week.”

Bumgarner didn’t allow a walk for the first time this season, giving up seven hits in 7 1-3 innings. He gave up at least four earned runs for the second straight outing.

The Giants made a late lineup change, scratching left fielder Melky Cabrera with a left toe injury. Nate Schierholtz moved into the lineup in right field, with Gregor Blanco shifting to left.

Cabrera pinch hit with two outs in the eighth and runners on the corners and grounded out on the first pitch he saw.

Bochy even pulled out one of former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa’s old stops.

Bumgarner batted eighth and Emmanuel Burriss in the ninth spot to give the Giants “a couple leadoff hitters, a couple speed guys back-to-back,” Bochy said. “I know Tony did it.”

Bochy did the same thing on May 20, 2010, at Arizona. He hit Tim Lincecum eighth and Andres Torres ninth.

The operations go under different names such as “Ohio Valley Gold and Silver Refinery” or “Treasure Hunters Roadshow.”

Marlene Powell and her friend Karin Engel were curious when they spotted the ad. “It said as seen on TV, and with the words road show,” Powell said.

They thought it was the “Antiques Roadshow,” a common misconception that led to the company being sued for trademark violations. The women felt deceived again when they went to the event at a local Hampton Inn.

“I had a piece of 18 karat gold that I know for a fact was 18 karat and they told me, ‘No it wasn’t,’” said Powell.

They believe they were taken for hundreds of dollars and they’re not alone. CBS 5 compiled complaints from across the country, mostly from seniors. They include a 71-year-old in West Virginia and an 88-year-old on the Canadian border. Both are grandmothers desperate for cash, selling family heirlooms for pennies on the dollar.

After jeweler Tom Broadwin heard similar complaints from his customers, he decided to visit the same roadshow, traveling under yet another name, this time Premiere Estate Buyers.

“I had a gold bracelet filled with coins, unmistakably gold coins,” said Broadwin. “The individual looked at it for a few minutes and told me they were plated. That was fraud right to my face.”

Broadwin agreed to lend CBS 5 $8,000 worth of gold for our investigation. Before handing it over, he tested each piece for karat count and weight. We took the gold to three separate jewelers to confirm its value. Then the gold was brought to a show in Santa Cruz.

We knew 13 out of the 15 pieces were 18 karat gold. But after carefully examining each item, a road show manager said: “I’ve got some 10 and 14 karat, a mix. Believe it or not half of what you have on the table here is copper.”

Maybe he missed the 18k stamp, and that acid test was wrong. Was it an isolated experience? CBS 5 decided to find out.

So we sent our gold to CBS stations across the country, asking teams in Sacramento, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Dallas to go undercover.

In two cities, they got the karats right. But at two other shows, CBS producers were told 18 karat pieces were only 14 karats. And three out of the five initial offers we received were less than a quarter of the gold’s value.

After weeks of undercover investigations, CBS 5 traveled to the THR corporate headquarters in Springfield, Illinois.

“We are not in the business of lying to people,” Spokesperson Matthew Enright said.

It turns out the company operates 120 traveling shows a week under at least 8 different names. First, Enright examined our gold and confirmed it was 18 karats. Then we showed him our undercover video, in which a salesman tells us one of the 18 karat pieces is only 10 karats.

CBS 5 asked Enright: “There’s a bit of a trend here. Either he doesn’t have a cursory knowledge of gold, or he’s lying to customers.”

His response: “Sure. I mean it’s obviously a concern for me seeing that.”

CBS 5 questioned why it had happened on multiple occasions. He said, “Well it’s a very small percentage compared to 140 managers that we have.”

He said employees are not “trained” to purposely deceive customers. But CBS 5 obtained a THR buying guide which shows employees are “trained” to make a first offer of $1.50 per pennyweight.

The going rate is more than 30 times that.

“Isn’t that excessive?” CBS 5 asked him.

Enright responded: “Ah you know…it’s absolutely legal.”

When asked, “So the question is, do you feel guilty?” Enright said, “I’m not the one out there buying and doing those types of things.”

But “those types of things” have been great for business. The company brought in $300 million last year.

But there are signs of trouble. Two weeks into our investigation, the company’s checks stopped clearing. “The most recent number was 4,000,” said Enright.

It turns out PNC Bank closed THR’s account. The company is now scrambling to make amends, re-issuing checks out of a new account. “It’s an unfortunate situation. I have no idea why it was closed,” said Enright.

The company’s CEO Jeffrey Parsons owes the IRS more than $3 million. And according to court documents, he may have used the company bank account as his personal piggy bank. His current country club residence and the company’s Cessna at least in part paid for with silver coins.

“He did buy a jet and a house with silver?” CBS 5 asked Enright. “Sure,” he confirmed.

CBS 5 then asked, “Do you think the bank unexpectedly closing your account has anything to do with Mr. Parsons using company funds for extravagant personal expenses?”

His response: “Hmmm. I don’t know. It’s a great question, I don’t know.”

Members of the UC Board of Regents left the meeting room at the Sacramento Convention Center shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday after a dozen protesters stood up, began chanting and clapping hands and refused requests to stop.

The demonstrators said they are protesting “UC management,” tuition hikes and police crackdowns on campus protests.

The disruption occurred just before the regents were set to consider plans to raise tuition this fall to offset state budget cuts. The board is not scheduled to vote on a tuition increase Wednesday.

The UC Board of Regents on Wednesday also approved the appointment of Pradeep Khosla as UC San Diego’s eighth chancellor. Khosla was Carnegie Mellon University’s engineering school dean.

The India native will succeed Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, who she is stepping down Aug. 1 after eight years.

Khosla’s annual salary will be $411,084, about 5 percent more than Fox’s annual pay of $392,200.

UC officials say Fox’s salary has not increased in nearly five years and Khosla’s UC San Diego salary is less than what he’s currently paid.

Police said Ryan Young, a meat clerk at the Del Rey Oaks location, intervened when he saw Quyen Van Tran beating his pregnant girlfriend in the store last month.

“If it was their wife who was pregnant or their daughter who was pregnant who was being attacked, would they want someone to step in and help them?” Young said.

Authorities, including the city’s police chief, praised Young for stopping the assault.

Young was suspended for supposedly violating company policy. He has no income while his wife is five months pregnant.

CBS 5 has received numerous e-mails, comments and Facebook messages from viewers, saying Young got a raw deal. Several have threatened to stop shopping at Safeway. One woman even offered to help Young financially.

The grocery chain released a statement to CBS affiliate KION on Wednesday. It said:

“Safeway is taking this matter seriously. We have store security video of the incident, and have been engaged in a careful and thoughtful forensic review of what transpired. There are two sides to every story, and we would ask that judgment be reserved. The matter is being handled through the union grievance procedure provided for in our labor agreement. We will be relying on the video and other relevant evidence as well as statements of eyewitnesses and other information to make a final decision. Beyond that, it is premature to comment on a personnel matter of this kind. The safety of our customers and employees is of paramount importance, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we give the issue the time and attention that it deserves.”

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office also has a copy of the surveillance video.

Attorney Tom Worthington said the grocery chain and Young are in a difficult position.

“They can’t have a policy that just gives carte blanche to the employees to intervene anytime and anywhere that the employee thinks is suitable. But on the other hand, in my judgment, they shouldn’t have a policy that is so strict that the employee can’t do the right thing,” Worthington said.

Young is hoping Safeway does what he said is the right thing.

“I should be reinstated to my job,” Young said. “That’s how I feel.”

An Alameda County sheriff’s spokesman says the deputy was trying to put Daniel Jordan DeWitt in waist and leg chains for transport from a county psychiatric facility to Napa State Hospital Wednesday morning when DeWitt punched him in the chin.

Sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson told the Oakland Tribune that the deputy will undergo surgery and have his jaw wired shut for four to six weeks.

The 23-year-old DeWitt is charged with murder in the beating death of Peter Cukor on Feb. 18.

After DeWitt was charged, a judge determined that he was not mentally fit to stand trial and ordered that he be committed to the Napa facility.

The Contra Costa Times reported Wednesday that the women claim in a lawsuit filed last week that authorities missed a chance to ascertain the full scope of the abuse in 1995 when they interviewed the sisters, then minors, in front of their parents.

At the time, police and prosecutors were investigating rape allegations one of the girls had made against her father, Bruce “Zion” Dutro. He ended up being sentenced to three years’ probation.

Antioch police launched a more comprehensive investigation in 2009 when the women renewed their complaints.

Bruce Dutro was sentenced to life in prison and his wife to 15 years in February.

Darvish (6-1) gave up one run and four hits while striking out seven to win his sixth game in seven decisions. After giving up a run in the first, Darvish settled down and retired 11 of the last 15 batters he faced. He lowered his ERA to 2.60.

Mike Adams struck out Johnny Gomes, who represented the tying run, for the final out in the eighth. Joe Nathan struck out the side in the ninth his eighth save.

Craig Gentry and Elvis Andrus each had two hits, including run-scoring singles in a decisive fourth inning.

Oakland rookie pitcher Tommy Milone (5-3) gave up four runs in seven innings, holding the Rangers’ offense down until the fourth.

The Rangers sent nine players to the plate in a four-run fourth inning that was started by Josh Hamilton’s infield single and Beltre’s home run.

Gentry and Andrus added run-scoring hits. Hamilton, who extended his hitting streak to an AL season-best 16 games, had two hits and a run scored.

Beltre has tormented Oakland pitching. His homer was his ninth against the A’s in the last two seasons.

Josh Reddick gave Oakland a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. He struck out in his next three at-bats.

Notes: Michael Young was out of the Rangers lineup, the third consecutive day manager Ron Washington gave at least one of the regulars a break. “One more guy, then I’ve done everyone.” That would be slugger Josh Hamilton. Washington said before the game he wasn’t sure when Hamilton would get a break, and was waiting to see what happened in the game. . Milone entered the game allowing a .175 average to batters leading off an inning, fifth lowest in the AL. … Alexi Ogando has not allowed a run in 15 1/3 consecutive innings. The 22-year-old Sagan, riding for Liquigas-Cannondale, finished the 130.2-mile stage from Sonora to Clovis—the longest leg in the race—in 5 hours, 18 minutes, 8 seconds in 95-degree conditions.

“Today was a harder stage,” Sagan said. “Today, I was thinking it was not possible for me to win, but (teammate) Daniel (Oss) said, ‘Today we work for you.”’

Australia’s Heinrich Haussler, racing for Garmin-Barracuda, was second for the fourth straight day, about a bike-length behind. Rabobank’s Michael Matthews, also from Australia, was third in the stage.

Jeff Louder, the United Healthcare rider from Salt Lake City, was 34 seconds back in third place with four stages left.

Sagan’s fourth straight 10-second bonus for a stage win gave him a 40-second advantage over the expected overall contenders, including defending champion Chris Horner, the RadioShack-Nissan rider from Bend, Ore.

Horner finished in the main field for the fourth consecutive day. He was 27th in the stage and 18th overall.

Three-time race winner Levi Leipheimer of Santa Rosa, who rides for the Belgium-based Omega Pharma-QuickStep team, was 36th overall, also 40 seconds back.

“I think tomorrow I will say goodbye to the yellow jersey,” Sagan said. “But maybe tomorrow I recover and try for another stage later in the race.”

Haussler, a former Tour de France stage winner, again failed in an attempt to pass Sagan in the final sprint.

“Sagan is the fastest guy at the moment and he proved it again today,” Haussler said. “I believe we’ve got one more opportunity for a sprint. And I’m very motivated, but there’s some serious racing to get through in the next few days.”

The warm conditions led four riders to abandon the race, with 118 riders from a starting field of 128 in Santa Rosa now left.

The eight-day event continues Thursday with an 18.4-mile individual time trial in Bakersfield, followed by two mountain stages. The 735-mile race concludes Sunday with a 42-mile road race from Beverly Hills to Los Angeles.

Move over email, when it comes to teenage communication, texting is it! And that’s how the new anti-violence app “Circle of Six” is reaching young adults.

“We put together this very simple iPhone app where you can contact six of your friends from your contact list and prevent a situation from happening,” explained Deb Levine, designer of the app.

A situation like dating violence might be avoided with with a push of a button. Say you feel threatened on a date:

“With a tap of your finger tip you can simply say ‘call me I need an interruption,’” Levine said.

Or you’ve lost your ride and need a way home, a text message goes out to six of your friends saying, ‘Hi, I need a ride and here are my GPS coordinates.’ It’s free, discreet, and just the latest innovation from Deb Levine and her non profit ISIS: Internet Sexuality Information Services.

“What we try to do is take technology that’s already been developed, that’s in use by the general population, but apply for social good,” said Levine.

She’s pioneered using technology to educate youth on sexual health, starting with the first health question and answer service on line: “Go Ask Alice.” Levine was fresh out of grad school and working as a health educator at Columbia University when she started a campus website to answer students health questions. Go Ask Alice would grow to become the go-to resource for sexual health on the fledgling world wide web.

“We were on to something in 1993,” Levine mused. “And we’re still on it. We’re still on the same path.”

That path that has taken Levine from the origins of the internet to today’s cutting edge technology – everything from mobile health tips to social media campaigns on sexual health, to online notifications that alert partners that they may have been exposed to an STD.

San Francisco State University student Arai Buendia now works as an intern with Levine and the ISIS team.

“Deb has been able to move this sexual health forward and not just stayed with one on one peer education,” Buendia said.

And that means critical information is reaching a larger audience than ever.

“The goal for ISIS is to raise a next generation, and a next generation of sexually responsible, mature, healthy adults,” said Levine.

So for adapting sexual health information to the digital age, this week’s Jefferson Award in the Bay Area goes to Deb Levine.

A year and half later, the movie “The Social Network” and the attention that followed have dispelled much of the mystery surrounding Zuckerberg, sketching out the essentials of his story line. But as Facebook promotes the vision of its 28-year-old CEO as part of this week’s first-ever sale of stock to the public, one of the most striking features of his persona is the contradiction between the public and private that remains at its center.

Zuckerberg avoids questions about himself and once sued a magazine for publishing documents revealing details from his past. Yet he is the architect of a revolutionary platform built on people freely disclosing information about themselves, offering up the stuff of everyday life as worthy of the biggest stage.

“Facebook was not originally created to be a company,” Zuckerberg wrote in a letter, included with a regulatory filing needed for the initial public offering. “It was built to accomplish a social mission – to make the world more open and connected.”

Zuckerberg has built Facebook, which could be valued at up to $104 billion by the stock offering, into an international phenomenon by stretching the lines of social convention and embracing a new and far more permeable definition of community. Along the way, he’s proven deft at recognizing the way people use social networks, reshaping and expanding Facebook’s capabilities to draw in more users.

On Friday, Facebook will begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbol “FB.” Zuckerberg will remain the company’s largest shareholder. His personal stake in Facebook will be worth around $19 billion.

Living in a rental home even after he was a billionaire on paper, Zuckerberg isn’t known for an extravagant lifestyle. He famously wears jeans, T-shirts and plain hoodies. He bought his Palo Alto home for a reported $7 million – fancy but not outlandish for the pricey suburb near Stanford University and San Francisco. He lives there with his girlfriend, Priscilla Chen, and their Hungarian Puli dog, “Beast” (which incidentally has its own Facebook page).

Now, even as investors take a stake in Facebook, its future remains contingent on a leader who is reluctant to reveal himself.

“It’s all in one guy’s hands, that’s what makes it so interesting,” said David Kirkpatrick, author of “The Facebook Effect,” a book chronicling Zuckerberg’s story that was written with the cooperation of the man and his company. “It is a one-man show.”

Zuckerberg, who grew up in the New York suburb of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., began writing computer code when he was 10 on an Atari computer, devising games and enlisting friends to do the graphics. As a senior at Phillips Exeter Academy, he and a friend created a Web tool called Synapse that built personalized music playlists by automatically determining listener’s preferences. Microsoft reportedly offered the pair nearly $1 million, but they turned it down.

Soon after arriving at Harvard in 2003, Zuckerberg created a site called Coursematch that allowed students to choose classes by showing what their classmates were doing. Then, in the fall of his sophomore year, he hacked into the online “facebooks” of Harvard’s residential halls to create Facemash, a site that encouraged students to rank their classmates’ looks.

The university’s Administrative Board called him in for a hearing, but let him remain at the school.

In early 2004, former classmates said, the normally sociable Zuckerberg all but vanished for a week, emerging from his room to urge his friends to join a new creation called The Facebook.

Stephanie Camaglia Reznick, then a freshman at Harvard who was the 92nd to sign up, said Zuckerberg quickly gained notoriety. She recalled when, arriving for the first day of a discussion group for an introductory psychology class, eyebrows went up when Zuckerberg’s turn came to introduce himself.

“Someone said, `Great, you’re the Facebook guy!’ And he was so embarrassed,” says Reznick, now a medical student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. “He really played it down.”

Classmate James Oliver recalls a conversation in the dorm soon after, when Zuckerberg – he and others still refer to him as “Zuck” – explained that he had worked to launch Facebook quickly to show up a Harvard administrator who had said a university-wide online directory would take two years to create. By the end of the semester, Facebook had nearly 160,000 users.

But three fellow Harvard students quickly took issue with Zuckerberg’s creation. Identical twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and friend Divya Narendra said they had hired Zuckerberg to write computer code for their own social networking site in November 2003, and that he had stolen their idea.

The dispute over Facebook’s beginnings – which the company settled by paying the trio $65 million – is far from unique.

“Being first is heavily overrated in the technology space because all really good ideas end up being collaborative. … It’s the execution that matters,” said Paul Saffo, of the San Francisco analysis firm Discern.

In the summer after his sophomore year, Zuckerberg left Harvard for a rented house in Silicon Valley to build Facebook, expanding it to other campuses and then across the globe with venture funding from Peter Thiel, one of the founders of PayPal. Each time it seemed to plateau, Zuckerberg revamped it to create new utility and sources of entertainment. He turned down an offer from Yahoo! to buy the company for $1 billion.

As it has grown into a phenomenon, Facebook has repeatedly sparked privacy concerns from critics concerned about its push to get users to reveal more personal information. But Zuckerberg, the face of Facebook, has offered up relatively little about himself.

The bubble was breached in 2007 when 02138, a now defunct magazine for Harvard alumni, published a lengthy story about the dispute over Facebook’s beginnings. The magazine obtained court files that were supposed to be sealed and posted documents on its website, including Zuckerberg’s application to Harvard and long-ago postings from his online journal. Richard Bradley, the executive editor of the magazine, said the documents revealed details including Zuckerberg’s social security number and financial data from Facebook’s first year.

Facebook sued, seeking a court order to have the documents removed.

“They shed some insight into Zuckerberg which he clearly did not want people to see,” Bradley said. “Our lawyer conveyed to us the strong sense from his communication with Facebook’s law firm that Facebook’s lawyers were not entirely enthusiastic about pursuing this litigation, but that Zuckerberg himself was livid.”

Facebook’s request was denied and the documents circulated freely on the Web, with little other information available to counter the portrait of Zuckerberg they offered. Some of those who know him say the perceptions are misguided. Rather than being some kind of anti-social genius, his success was based on the fact that he liked people and was well liked, they say.

Kirkpatrick, who wrote the book on Facebook, said Zuckerberg’s true genius is understanding how, in a new age, people and computers can interact.

“Zuckerberg thought, `I want to take the fact that transparency and sharing are the future,” he said, “and build technology that takes that for granted.’”

California is expected to face shortfalls for the foreseeable future and in some cases the financial pain on Californians will persist.

For example, officials at the University of California are already considering plans to raise tuition by 6 percent this fall.

Cheryl Deutsch, a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles, said UC will lose whether the tax initiative passes or fails.

The California State University system hiked tuition by 9 percent for the upcoming year and froze admissions for next spring.

Brown admits his tax hike is no panacea and is leaning on Democrats to make more cuts.

“American consumers are really left in the dark when it comes to picking a good sunscreen,” said Leeann Brown, of the group’s Oakland office.

Brown said her organization reviewed more than 1,800 personal care products that claim to offer sun protection. She said many contained one of two questionable ingredients: retinol palmitate and oxybenzone.

Brown says retinol palmitate, a form of Vitamin A is, “an ingredient that’s been shown to expedite the development of skin tumors and skin lesions.” She says Oxybenzone “has been linked to hormone disruption.”

The Personal Care Products Council is disputing the report, calling it “irresponsible,” and “wrong.”

The report also found improvement in the quality of sun protection products marketed to children. Brown said 60 percent of those did not contain questionable ingredients.

“We were glad to see the children’s market look a little bit more positive,” she told CBS 5 Consumerwatch.

The E.W.G. recommends consumers look for sun protection products that contain zinc oxide, avobenzone and titanium dioxide. The group also recommends buying sunscreen that with an SPF between 30 and 50.

Armando Rodriguez, 34, was arrested and booked in the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp for violating TB Control Orders of County Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Furst. The arrest was made by Stockton Police at the request of Public Health Services and the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office.

San Joaquin County has over time arrested and jailed a number of patients and on occasion non-patients for failure to comply with written TB Control Orders of the county health officer. Doing so is a misdemeanor and can be punished by up to one year in the county jail and two years probation.

This case is not believed to have created an issue of exposure as there is no allegation that treatment was lost for a significant period of time, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Rodriguez reportedly first broke an appointment to be home on May 2 and failed to resolve his matter with the Public Health Services by phone calls and attempts to find him through May 9. A warrant was signed on Monday and Stockton Police arrested him Tuesday.

The county has had more than 30 tuberculosis prosecutions since 1984, prosecutor Stephen Taylor said. It also has prosecuted a woman accused of knowingly giving syphilis to her sex partners and refusing treatment.

Taylor said San Joaquin County is more aggressive than other jurisdictions in prosecuting tuberculosis patients to get them to take their medication.

“The criminal cases we’re dealing with generally involve drug users who are harder to treat and manage because the TB medicines conflict with street drugs,” he said. “We have to throw these people in jail and treat them as in-patients. They don’t cooperate as out-patients.”

Rodriguez was discharged in March from San Joaquin General Hospital with four medications for active tuberculosis and agreed to take the drugs under observation by a county health official on weekdays and on his own on weekends, authorities said.

He failed to self-administer the drugs on one day, telling a nurse he had gone on an alcohol binge and taken methamphetamine and didn’t want to hurt his liver, Wick said in her letter.

He allegedly refused to take the drugs on another day and then was not at home on three occasions and missed an appointment.

Santa Clara County Deputy Counsel Michael Rossi said the pine boxes were found in February when crews were doing excavation work to prepare for the construction of a new loading dock at Valley Medical Center.

KCBS’ Chris Filippi Reports:

“We don’t have any visual confirmation of what’s in those boxes,” he said. “However, some follow-up research has indicated that there was a cemetery located in that portion of the Valley Medical Center campus between 1875 and 1935.”

Rossi said that upon discovery, the boxes were immediately reburied and that all told, there could be as many as 1,450 sets of remains in the area.

He said many hospitals used to have pauper cemeteries, otherwise known as potter’s fields, for the indigent and for those whose families could not be found.

Now, the county is seeking a court order to remove the boxes.

“Under the health and safety code, the country is required to obtain a court order to remove the human remains,” Rossi said.

Santa Clara County officials are looking to hire an archeologist to examine the remains. If any are identified, Rossi said that efforts will be made to contact relatives.

On January 12, when the valves of the Coyote Dam were opened, a small amount of hydraulic oil leaked into the reservoir. But this is the not the first time it has happened. There have been eight such leaks since 2001.

KCBS’ Matt Bigler Reports:

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the leaks but Santa Clara Valley Water District Spokesperson Marty Grimes said the spills have had virtually no impact on water quality.

“The amount is very small. It gets dissipated so there’s no evidence that we have any impact to the environment or to our water quality,” he said.

Grimes said they plan to replace the leaky hydraulic systems at a price of $5 million each, but that won’t happen until the reservoirs are drained as part of a retrofit project over the next 10 years.

The DA’s Office has notified the Water District that they could be fined up to $25,000 in connection with the latest spill.

There will not be another bridge walk for pedestrians, like the one that took place in 1987 for the 50th anniversary celebration. Back then, hundreds of thousands of people jammed onto the bridge, causing it to flatten.

In fact, the bridge will be closed on May 27th to pedestrians from 6 p.m. until after an 18-minute fireworks show that begins at 9:30 p.m. Event organizers are warning commuters that traffic on the bridge will briefly be stopped during the fireworks display.

Organizers are saying there will be no shortage of festivities. Don Richards, the producer of the event, said instead there will be a waterfront festival from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Fort Point to the Marina.

Bridge manager Kary Witt thinks it’s a good idea.

“With the bridge as a backdrop, Crissy Field along with Marina Green; the waterfront of San Francisco is an ideal location for that many people to come celebrate, but also to have adequate food, water, facilities, etc. to have a really fun day,” he said.

That day will include vintage cars, a flotilla of ships, a popup museum of bridge history, performances by Mickey Hart and Beach Blanket Babylon, along with the fireworks show, according to Richards. But he didn’t reveal everything planned for the celebration.

“It’ll be a surprise, there are a few things that we’re not letting out of the bag and it’s really exciting,” Richards said.

Richards said come by foot, bike, bus or boat, but leave the car at home.

Spectators will also be able to take it all in from the Marin County side of the bridge as well.

The city stands to lose $7.8 million in federal HIV/AIDS funding in the fiscal year starting July 1st.

Among the supervisors urging the mayor to act was David Campos, who represents District 9.

“Every single cent that we’re trying to restore is a cent that is going to save lives,” said the supervisor who represents parts of the Mission, Bernal Heights and Portola neighborhoods.

Supervisor Christine Olague, who represents District 5, said it was the obligation of the “three representatives of the queer community to strand strong behind this.”

The third supervisor was Scott Wiener of District 8 which includes the Castro.

Wiener said they’re working with the mayor whose budget proposal is due June 1st.

“We hope he’ll back them 100 percent. If not we’ll have to do the job when the budget comes through the Board of Supervisors,” Wiener said.

The Asian Pacific Islander Wellness Center cares for and treats over 400 HIV positive Tenderloin residents. Lance Toma, the center’s executive director, said nearly $8 million from the Ryan White Care Act and the Centers for Disease Control allowed San Francisco to build an impressive but fragile network.

“It is like a tinker-toy structure. Remove a stick here and remove a spool there and it will crumble. Without this network, HIV will be a death sentence for our most vulnerable residents,” Toma said.

Dr. Joanna Eveland with the Mission Neighborhood Health Center said the loss of $7.8 million would be too great. Eveland said the services they provide simply aren’t supplemental and that scientific studies show they’re every bit as important as the prescriptions patients receive.

“People have forgotten how to cook, they don’t want to spend time in the kitchen, they want everything really fast…there’s kind of a trade off there, particularly with food,” said Wolf.

The new feature debuting Wednesday draws from a Google-built database of more than 500 million people, places and commonly requested things to provide a summary of vital information alongside the main search results.

Google Inc. spent the past two years poring through online encyclopedia Wikipedia, the CIA Factbook and other sources to expand a database of 12 million items that it picked up as part of its 2010 acquisition of Metaweb.

The information warehouse, which Google calls a “Knowledge Graph,” is an attempt by the Internet’s dominant search engine to provide answers as quickly and concisely as possible so users don’t have to sift through a hodgepodge of Web links displayed on the main results page.

The nuggets of information will appear in boxes to the right of the main search results. Google will gradually roll out the feature to its logged-in users in the U.S. during the next few days before extending it to a wider audience.

The changes come as one of Google’s biggest rivals, Internet social networking leader Facebook Inc., prepares to complete an initial public offering of stock that is dominating the technology spotlight. The Knowledge Graph’s unveiling comes a week after the second-largest search engine, Microsoft Corp.’s Bing, announced an overhaul that will highlight more information mined from Facebook – insights that typically don’t show up in Google’s results.

The Knowledge Graph will work in different ways.

If a person enters a search request, such as “kings,” that can be interpreted in several ways, Google will now display a box on the right side of the page listing several other options, such as the Los Angeles Kings hockey team, the Sacramento Kings basketball team and the Kings TV show. Clicking on any of these choices will deliver results exclusively devoted to that topic.

Queries on specific people or places will generate thumbnails that list key statistics about the topic. Google bases its assumption on what people are most likely to want to know on an analysis of past search requests.

Google is hailing the Knowledge Graph as an important step in Internet search’s evolution. The company is trying to make the difficult transition from merely presenting a list of Web links to delivering the kinds of responses that people expect when they pose a question to an expert.

“This used to be the stuff of dreams because we didn’t really know how to accomplish it,” said Amit Singhal, a Google fellow who has been studying search for 22 years. “The dream has always been to understand things like you and I do, so this this really feels like a sea change.”

The Knowledge Graph also will help address another problem vexing Google.

As websites seeking traffic have learned to manipulate commonly requested search terms, their links have been appearing more frequently on the first page of Google’s results, even though they might not have the most relevant information. Google periodically tries to remove the rubbish by tweaking its ranking system, only to have websites figure out new ways to outfox the search formula.

If the Knowledge Graph works like it’s supposed to, it will give visitors less reason to leave Google’s website.

Although Google says that isn’t its main objective, anything that gives people a reason to hang around for longer periods, and perhaps enter more search requests, promises to help the company make more money. Google distributes ads all over the Web, but it reaps its highest profit margins from commercial links that are clicked on its own website.

Anything that keeps people on Google longer is likely to amplify complaints that the company is more interested in promoting its own services than pointing visitors to other helpful Internet destinations.

Singhal doesn’t see it that way. “As we answer more of our users’ questions, we save them time,” he said. “Time is the only quantity that we can’t make more of. When people save time, people search more. The Web gets more traffic and all boats rise.”

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 40 percent of the population understands the dangers of distracted driving, but 60 percent of drivers are still increasing the use of phones while driving.

KCBS’ Margie Shafer Reports:

“It’s kind of like candy. It’s too good to give up for some people,” said Chris Cochran with the Office of Traffic Safety.

But he said that in the coming years, he believes there will be a technological fix to the problem.

Car and cellphone manufacturers have the technology to turn off the ability to use a phone in a moving car or send out a message saying the driver is unable to use the phone. But Cochran said it still needs refinement.

“What they’re working on is to ensure that other people in the car can still use their cellphones,” he said.

More than 57,000 tickets were issued in April to California drivers who were caught using a handheld cellphone or texting while driving, all part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
