JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (CBS Sports) – The San Jose Sabercats (6-2) won their fourth consecutive Arena Football League game, defeating the Jacksonville Sharks (6-3) 57-36 in front of 8,641 fans at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night. Quarterback Russ Michna completed 16-of-23 passes for 258 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions and also rushed for a pair of scores. On his fourth touchdown pass of the game, he hit the 300-mark for his career. San Jose’s defense continued its run of recent dominance, forcing three turnovers and holding their opponent to less than 40 points for the fourth consecutive week.

San Jose got going early, opening the scoring on their first play from scrimmage, as Michna picked out wide receiver Huey Whittaker for a 29-yard strike, the former South Florida Bull’s tenth receiving score on the season. After a touchdown pass by Sharks quarterback R.J. Archer to Jeff Hughley leveled things at 6-6, Michna showed his wheels, sprinting in untouched on a bootleg from three yards out to put San Jose on top 13-6 midway through the first quarter. San Jose carried a 16-6 advantage into the second quarter after Nich Pertuit made a 37-yard field goal, his first attempt on the season.

Jacksonville fought back into the game, as Archer picked out Jeron Harvey for a seven-yard score early in the quarter, cutting the San Jose lead to 16-13. The SaberCats scored on their ensuing possession, as Whittaker found paydirt for the second time on the night, this time on a three-yard rush. The Sharks blocked the extra point attempt, and returned it for a two-point score to bring themselves within a touchdown, 22-15. With just over four minutes to play in the half, Archer connected with Harvey again, this time from 23-yards out to tie the game at 22. San Jose struck again, this time as time expired in the half, as Michna picked out a wide open Whittaker once again and the SaberCats carried a 29-22 lead into the break.

Whittaker showed his versatility, intercepting an R.J. Archer pass inside the ten on Jacksonville’s opening drive of the half. Michna put his athleticism on display once again, scrambling and scoring his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time from 13 yards out. San Jose forced another turnover and scored their third unanswered touchdown, as Michna found Fred Williams for a 24-yard touchdown on a screen pass to stretch their lead to 43-22 midway through the quarter.

San Jose’s defense pitched a shutout in the third, but the Sharks pulled within 14 early in the fourth, as Archer picked out Markee White for a four-yard touchdown. San Jose responded quickly with a four-yard score of their own, as Michna threw the 300th touchdown pass of his career, this time to Fred Williams. Jacksonville pulled a score back with seven minutes remaining, when Archer found Hughley for a 20-yard score in the corner of the endzone, cutting the San Jose lead to 50-36, but they would get no closer. Michna finished off his night, accounting for his seventh score (fifth passing), when he connected with a wide open Jason Willis for a six-yard score to push the lead to 57-36, which is how things finished.

The SaberCats return home next week to host the Utah Blaze on Saturday, May 25 at HP Pavilion in San Jose.

DANVILLE (CBS/AP) — Leopold Konig of the Czech Republic won the seventh stage of the Tour of California in a mountaintop finish Saturday, and American Tejay van Garderen finished third to keep the overall lead for the third straight day.

Konig, riding for the German team NetApp-Endura team, quickly moved ahead of Janier Acevedo of Colombia with about 400 yards left and completed the 91.4-mile stage from Livermore to Mount Diablo in 3 hours, 54 minutes, 17 seconds.

Acevedo, the Jamis-Hagens Berman rider who won the second stage, finished second in the stage that closed with an 11.4-mile climb, 7 seconds behind.

“To be truthful, I wish the climb was a little longer,” said Konig, who claimed his fifth career win and first since a 2012 Tour of Britain stage win. “Today, I felt real good. I knew I would have a good race. I haven’t won any big races, so this was very good.”

Van Garderen, the 24-year-old BMC rider from Bozeman, Mont., was 12 seconds back. He took the overall lead with a 10th-place finish in the fifth stage, won the sixth stage and is within a day of his first pro stage race title. The eight-day, 727-mile event concludes Sunday with an 80.7-mile morning road race from San Francisco to Santa Rosa.

“I’m thrilled. I’m still soaking it in,” said van Garderen, who was surrounded by four teammates through much of the final climb. “It was an unbelievable team effort. I knew they were strong, I knew they’d be motivated, but they went above and beyond expectations today.”

Australia’s Michael Rogers of Saxo-Tinkoff finished fourth in the stage in the same time as van Garderen and remained second overall, 1:47 behind.

“They (his team) made my life somewhat easy, although it still was a hard day but stress-free,” said van Garderen, who finished fourth in the event last year and fifth in 2011.

With his runner-up stage finish, Acevedo moved into third place overall — 3:26 back.

A group of 10 riders, including Luxembourg’s Andy Schleck, the RadioSchleck Leopard rider who won the 2010 Tour de France, held an approximately a 3½-minute margin. But as the field of 111 approached the base of the final 11.4-mile climb to the finish, the field reduced its deficit to a minute.

Schleck and four others then accelerated alone and held a 50-second margin with 10 miles or about 45 minutes left in the stage. Three miles later, Dutchman Liuewe Westra of Vacansoleil-DCM, the winner of the first stage, and Spain’s David De La Cruz of NetApp-Endura moved to the from and built more than a minute cushion.

Spain’s Francisco Mancebo, the 5-Hour Energy/Kenda rider who won the fifth stage, joined Westra and De La Cruz at the front with about a 20-second cushion with less than three miles left.

Konig waited until about two miles left to join Acevedo and then time his sudden move, with Acevedo only briefly able to respond.

SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) — A lottery official said one winning ticket was sold in Florida for a record Powerball jackpot of approximately $600 million.

The numbers drawn Saturday were: 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and Powerball 11.

With four of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone was almost certain to win the game’s highest jackpot, though chances of winning remained astronomically low at 1 in 175.2 million.

OAKLAND (CBS/AP) — Brandon Moss hit a tiebreaking triple in the sixth inning to help Tommy Milone outduel Ervin Santana, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Saturday night.

The A’s had just five hits and were held to two runs for the third consecutive game but made it hold up in front of a rare sellout crowd at the Oakland Coliseum. The A’s also beat Kansas City 2-1 on Friday.

Milone (4-5) wasn’t crisp and pitched with runners on base in all but one of his six innings. The left-hander allowed a run in the first inning then blanked the Royals the rest of the way to end his five-game losing streak.

Billy Butler singled twice and drove in the only run for Kansas City, which has lost nine of 12.

Moss was mired in a 4-for-30 slump before tripling over the head of center fielder Lorenzo Cain to drive in Coco Crisp, who had walked. Eric Sogard started the inning with a leadoff double and scored on Jed Lowrie’s sacrifice fly.

Oakland didn’t get much else but didn’t need it.

Milone walked three and had four strikeouts but overcame his uneven performance to win for the first time since April 15. Ryan Cook and Sean Doolittle each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, and Grant Balfour worked the ninth for his eighth save.

Santana (3-3) pitched much more effectively than Milone but was denied in his third attempt at earning his 100th career victory. He allowed only three baserunners through the first five innings and gave up just four hits total but got little support.

The Royals failed to score after loading the bases against Milone with no outs in the second. They also stranded a runner at third with one out in the fourth.

Kansas City had the tying run on base in the ninth after Eric Hosmer drew a leadoff walk but Balfour retired the next three batters on flyouts.

Alex Gordon doubled with two outs in the first and scored on Butler’s bloop single to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead.

The Royals loaded the bases with no outs in the second but Milone got out of it without allowing a run. Elliott Johnson fouled out to Moss near the Kansas City dugout before Milone struck out Cain and Alcides Escobar.

Milone worked out of trouble again in the third when he gave up a leadoff double to Salvador Perez before retiring the next three batters.

Notes: Oakland OF Chris Young went 0 for 2 with a walk in his first game back from the disabled list. Young was activated before the game. … A’s 3B Josh Donaldson doubled in the second to extend his hitting streak to a career-best seven games. … To clear room for Young, Oakland 1B Daric Barton was designated for assignment. Barton hit .143 with one home run and three RBIs in eight games with the A’s. It’s the second time this season Barton has been designated for assignment. … RHP A.J. Griffin (4-3) starts the series finale for Oakland in his first career appearance against the Royals. … RHP Luis Mendoza (1-2), who pitches for Kansas City on Sunday, has a 3.48 ERA in five appearances against the A’s.

DENVER (CBS/AP) — Tyler Chatwood threw into the sixth inning and Wilin Rosario hit a two-run homer off Tim Lincecum in the Colorado Rockies’ 10-2 rout of the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night.

Promoted from Triple-A Colorado Springs before the game for his second stint with the Rockies this season, Chatwood (2-0) had a shaky second inning but settled in after that and handcuffed the Giants, who managed one run and six hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Rosario made a nifty defensive play to thwart a big second inning and drove in three runs for the Rockies, who beat the Giants for the second straight time after snapping a 10-game losing streak to them with a 10-9 win one night earlier, ending their longest streak over a division opponent since divisional play began in 1969, according to STATS.

Lincecum (3-3) committed a costly throwing error that led to a three-run third inning and also had a balk when he slipped off the mound that led to another run in the fourth before Rosario took him deep for his ninth homer in the fifth.

The Giants’ defensive slump continued despite a team meeting before the game in which manager Bruce Bochy addressed San Francisco’s poor defense of late.

“You’re going to have ups and downs, whether it’s hitting or sometimes defensively, but 13 errors in 10 games is too many,” Bochy said after the meeting.

Then, he watched the Giants commit three more errors.

Catcher Buster Posey airmailed a throw into center field on Carlos Gonzalez’s stolen base attempt in the first inning. Gonzales trotted to third but he was stranded there when Lincecum got Troy Tulowitzki to ground out to short to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Posey tried to advance to third on a pitch that got past Rockies catcher Rosario, but the ball ricocheted right back to Rosario, who spun and nailed Posey by several feet. Brandon Belt followed with a two-out double to the right-field corner.

Gregor Blanco drove in Belt with a bloop single to center, and Brandon Crawford drew an intentional walk before Lincecum was caught looking at the third strike, thwarting what could have been a bigger inning.

The Giants’ second error proved more costly as Lincecum’s bad throw on a comebacker led to a big third inning for Colorado.

Dexter Fowler doubled down the left-field line, scoring Charlie Blackmon from second to tie it at 1. Fowler scored when Lincecum fielded Josh Rutledge’s chopper and threw the ball into right field. Rutledge ended up at third base and trotted home on Gonzalez’s groundout.

Lincecum slipped off the rubber while pitching to Blackmon in the fourth, resulting in a balk that sent Nolan Arenado to second base. He took third when Blackmon flied out to center and scored on Chatwood’s single back up the middle, making it 4-1.

The Giants put runners at the corners in the fifth but Posey grounded out to the mound to end the threat, and Rosario’s two-run homer, his ninth, made it 6-1 in the fifth.

All of the six runs Lincecum allowed in five innings were earned. He gave up seven hits and walked a pair.

Rosario’s 60-foot dribbler down the third-base line off Jean Machi in the seventh drove in Fowler from third to make it 7-1.

Shortstop Brandon Crawford’s RBI single made it 7-2 in the eighth, but he committed San Francisco’s third error in the bottom half of the inning when he took his eye off a throw back into the infield, allowing Fowler to advance to second following an RBI single.

Tulowitzki added a two-run single off George Kontos to make it 10-2.

Josh Outman threw two effective innings of relief and Wilton Lopez got the final four outs.

Notes: This is Chatwood’s second stint with the Rockies this season. He went 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts earlier this season before returning to Triple-A. … Rockies OF Michael Cuddyer says he doubts his neck will bother him again this season after getting an epidural that relieved pain and stiffness. He returned to throwing and taking batting practice Saturday. … The Giants and Rockies wrap up their four-game series Sunday with LHP Barry Zito (3-2) and RHP Juan Nicasio (3-1) squaring off.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) — The Amgen tour of California rolls out of San Francisco to the finish line in Santa Rosa Sunday. The route through lush wine country is popular year round. But not everyone’s happy about all the bicycle traffic. Close encounters with drivers are becoming common and incidents of road rage are on the rise.

Gary Helfrick of the Bicycle Coalition keeps a database of harassment incidents that happen in Sonoma County.

“About half the incidents are throwing something out of your car or truck, the most common object is a beer bottle or can,” said Helfrick.

There are more other serious incidents like buzzing a line of bicyclists and if one person of the group loses control it can cause a great number of injuries.

PHOTOS: Amgen Tour & An Accident

The turning point in Sonoma County was when an 82-year-old resident was convicted of attempted murder last year for chasing a bicyclist off the road onto a golf course and running him over.

This case encouraged Sonoma County Supervisor Shilee Zane to take action with a new Anti-Harassment Law to protect Cyclists.

“If a cyclist and a car get into an accident, the car is going to win every single time,” said Zane, “So do they need extra protection? Are they vulnerable users? Absolutely.”

This ordinance makes Sonoma County the first in the nation that forbids motorists from physically assaulting or threatening to physically assault bicyclists or pedestrians.

“The bar is a much higher bar. This will give them civil recourse. We have a lot of aggressive drivers today we have a lot of distracted drivers. The bottom line is public health and safety and that is what this ordinance is about,” said Zane.

Local commuters like John Daniels are not happy about this ordinance.

Daniels said, “It’s just really dangerous.”

The biggest problem to him is bicyclists who ride parallel on narrow winding roads.

“I come around the corner at 55mph and I’ve got to go into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting the cyclist, or I have to slam on my brakes,” said Daniels.

KPIX went on a ride-along with Daniels and saw what he was talking about, cyclists in the bike lane, outside the bike lane, and in the car lane.

It turns out on most Sonoma County roads a white line marks a shoulder, not a bike lane. But the vehicle code does require bicyclists to ride as close as practicable to the edge of the roadway.

Helfrich does admit just like drivers that some bicyclists also behave badly.

Helfrich said if a conflict does arise, since cyclists have the most to lose they should turn the other check and let the people in the car go by and they have a great ride.

Sonoma county has passed the ordinance. Now 9 cities in the county are taking up the issue. Sebastopol recently passed an even stricter ordinance that requires cars to stay at least three feet away from cyclists. But Windsor, the town that John Daniels comes from, has voted down a similar measure.

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) — Festivities surrounding the Amgen Tour of California Race were brought to a temporary halt by a bomb scare in downtown Livermore Saturday afternoon, according to a police spokeswoman.

The multi-city bicycle race had already passed through town around 2:30 p.m. but many people remained on the scene when a suspicious cardboard box with a postmark from Southern California was spotted in a dumpster on the 2100 block of Second Street, according to Officer Traci Rebiejo.

The package was suspicious because police had cleared all garbage cans in the area prior to the race as a precaution, Rebiejo said.

A three-block area was evacuated and cleared of people and the Alameda County bomb squad was called to the scene.

However, a local vendor came forward and identified the box, saying it contained postcards and the scene was cleared shortly after 4 p.m.

“It just kind of ruined the festivities,” Rebiejo said. “It was right smack in the middle of it all.”

TRUCKEE (CBS/AP) — Federal investigators are trying to determine the cause of a small plane crash that killed a pilot near the Sierra town of Truckee.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the pilot was flying alone when the twin-engine Cessna 421 crashed Thursday afternoon in the Tahoe National Forest about 15 miles northeast of Truckee.

The pilot’s name wasn’t immediately released.

The plane was en route from Santa Clara to Reno, Nev., when it went off radar about 20 miles west of its destination.

Witnesses reported seeing a fireball in the sky before the plane went down.

The FAA says the plane was registered to Reno-based Tri-Wings LLC.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading an investigation into the crash.

SAN JOSE (CBS/AP) — The NHL fined the San Jose Sharks $100,000 on Saturday for general manager Doug Wilson’s comments criticizing the league for forward Raffi Torres’ suspension for the rest of the second round of the playoffs.

The NHL said the fine was issued for violating a rule put in place earlier this year prohibiting formal team statements to the media during the 48-hour period following a disciplinary decision. The rule calls for an automatic $25,000 fine, and the Sharks were docked an additional $75,000 under an article in the league’s constitution because of the “inappropriate nature of the comments.”

Torres was suspended for the rest of San Jose’s playoff series against Los Angeles on Thursday for an illegal check to the head of Kings forward Jarret Stoll during Game 1. The Kings took a 2-0 lead into Game 3 on Saturday night in San Jose.

Wilson said Friday that the organization strongly disagreed with the NHL’s decision to suspend Torres.

“It is abundantly clear that this was a clean hockey hit,” Wilson said in a statement. “As noted by the NHL, Raffi’s initial point of contact was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit on an opponent who was playing the puck. He did not leave his feet or elevate, he kept his shoulder tucked and elbow down at his side, and he was gliding — not skating or charging.”

The team had no comment Saturday about the fine.

It is the fourth career suspension for Torres, who is considered a repeat offender in dangerous hits under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

Stoll was bent forward while trying to play a bouncing puck when Torres approached him from the side for a violent hit in Game 1 on Tuesday night. Stoll’s head snapped back violently before he fell forward onto the ice. Stoll missed Game 2 and did not make the trip to San Jose for Saturday’s game. There is no timetable for his return.

In an explanatory video released by Brendan Shanahan, the NHL’s senior vice president of player safety, he said Stoll’s head was “the principal point of contact” in the hit, creating grounds for suspension. Although Torres initially made contact with Stoll’s right shoulder, Shanahan ruled that the shoulder hit was only a glancing blow, as evidenced by the direction both players traveled after the contact.

Wilson said the head must be targeted to violate Rule 48.1 and there is no evidence that Torres targeted Stoll’s head. Wilson also said Stoll put himself in a vulnerable position just before the hit to play a bouncing puck.

“It appears that the NHL has not only made an inappropriate application of this rule but is trying to make an example out of a player who is being judged on past events, one who has changed his game dramatically this season and taken only six minor penalties in 39 games,” Wilson said.

While playing for Phoenix last season, Torres received a 21-game suspension — initially 25 games — for a high hit on Chicago star Marian Hossa in the first round of the playoffs. Torres was suspended for two games in January 2012 for charging Minnesota defenseman Nate Prosser, and he sat out four games in April 2011 for a hit to the head of Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle while playing for Vancouver.

The Sharks acquired Torres from Phoenix just before the trading deadline and he provided an immediate spark in helping the team make the playoffs and sweep Vancouver in the first round. Torres scored in overtime in Game 2 against the Canucks.

San Jose was expected to get a boost to the lineup Saturday with the return of injured forward Marty Havlat, who has been sidelined since leaving Game 1 in the first round because of a lower-body injury. Havlat told the coaching staff after the morning skate he was ready to play and coach Todd McLellan said he would get Havlat back in the lineup. Havlat has 21 goals and 31 assists in 73 career playoff games.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Oxbow has won the Preakness, ruining Orb’s bid to capture the Triple Crown.

Oxbow led from start to finish. It was the sixth Preakness victory for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and 15th Triple Crown victory, most in horse racing history.

Orb finished fourth. The Kentucky Derby winner was a 3-5 favorite in Saturday’s race, but he became another casualty of starting on the rail in the Preakness. Since 1950, only two horses have won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown from the No. 1 post position.

Orb’s five-race winning streak ended on an overcast, windy day at Pimlico Race Course. The brown colt had not lost since Nov. 24.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (CBS/AP) — Nevada wildlife officials said they were forced to euthanize a bear that entered an Incline Village condominium because the bruin posed a danger to the public.

A woman phoned authorities after encountering the 3-year-old, 325-pound male bear inside her unit late Thursday night on Lake Tahoe’s north shore.

The black bear apparently entered the condo through an open garage door and unlocked door.

A Nevada Department of Wildlife biologist tranquilized the bear after it broke an upstairs window. The bear jumped from the building, climbed a tree and then fell to the ground.

Wildlife officials say they decided to euthanize the bear because of its behavior in entering the structure. The bear knocked over a dresser, knocked a mirror off the wall and tore up a couch.

NEWARK (CBS SF) — A Newark resident reported a suspicious person posing as a PG&E employee knocked on her door Thursday, according to police.

A resident on Marguerite Drive reported that around 3:30 p.m. a woman knocked on her door, claiming to be a PG&E employee, according to Newark police.

The person, who had a PG&E logo card hanging from a lanyard but no uniform or company vehicle, said she was taking measurements for an upcoming gas line project and asked for access to the back yard, the resident said.

The resident accompanied the woman to the back yard but found the behavior suspicious since she was aware of recent burglary activity.

PG&E was unable to confirm that the person was a legitimate employee, police said.

Anyone who is suspicious of someone claiming to be a PG&E employee can call the PG&E customer service line at (800) PGE-5000 to verify an appointment or confirm that PG&E is working in the area, police said.

Residents are asked to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to police.

MODESTO (CBS/AP) — Officials say 17 bodies have been removed from a Modesto funeral home after complaints the home was taking too long to cremate the bodies.

Stanislaus County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran says the removal of the bodies on Friday from McGuire Cremation & Funeral Service comes as the department investigates what he termed “potential criminal and civil violations” at the funeral home over the past several months.

Bejaran did not release additional details but Stanislaus County’s public health officer, John Walker, told the Modesto Bee that had had suspended permits for burial or cremation by the funeral home on May 1 because of several complaints “regarding delays in cremation of family members.”

Sheriff’s officials have not released the names of any of decedents, or say how long the bodies were at the funeral home.

NEWARK (CBS SF) — A man was clinging to life Saturday morning after being shot during an exchange of gunfire with Newark officers at the end of an hour-long standoff Friday evening, police said.

Officers responded to the 5500 block of McDonald Avenue at about 5:40 p.m. after receiving a call from a concerned person about a mentally depressed relative in possession of several firearms, police said.

The caller also mentioned that the relative had been making suicidal threats, according to police.

Negotiators talked with the male by phone, and heard several shots being fired from inside the home, police said.

Officers surrounded the home and also heard a number of shots being fired, according to police.

After about 45 minutes attempting to diffuse the situation, the male refused to surrender and threatened to shoot the officers. He then disconnected his call with negotiators, according to police.

Additional officers responded to the area in an armored vehicle, and an armed man came out of the home and fired shots at the officers in the vehicle, police said.

Officers fired back and hit the man at least once, and he retreated back inside the home, according to police.

The man was rescued by officers and was transported to a hospital where he was treated for life-threatening injuries, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.

Quakes Hit Near Eureka

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) — Two earthquakes rattled the far Northern California coast Saturday morning, but authorities say there are no reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the first quake hit at 6:46 a.m. Saturday 34 miles southwest of Eureka. Then a second quake — with a magnitude of 3.9 — hit at 8:54 a.m. 29 miles southwest of Eureka.

The USGS says it has received reports of shaking felt in Eureka and nearby Ferndale, but a Eureka police dispatcher says she did not feel either quake, and the department had not received any calls about the earthquakes.

USGS seismologist John Bellini says the quakes are probably part of what he termed a “cluster of activity” in the area, and he notes earthquakes of similar sizes hit the area on a regular basis.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – No longer exclusively used by the military, drones are increasingly being used by groups and private individuals. As drones become even more popular, and with very few rules regarding their use, privacy experts are worried.

With a homeowner’s permission, KPIX 5 launched our drone, and shot video from their backyard. While we didn’t get close to the fence line, cameras can clearly see into the yards of next door neighbors.

KPIX 5 bought the drone from a Brookstone store at a mall for about $300. The company’s website said it has sold about 66,000 of them. It has two high-definition cameras and can be controlled by a smartphone or tablet.

Even hobbyists admit the cool factor of having your very own drone comes with privacy concerns.

“I’ve seen it on the internet, people doing things they shouldn’t be doing,” said hobbyist Chris Kaczmarkzyk.

“The drones really range in size, everything from the size of a small insect to the size of a jet aircraft,” said Jennifer Lynch, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Two years ago, the group filed a lawsuit forcing the government to release information on how it uses drones.

But more and more, private citizens are getting their hands on the devices.

“I certainly understand and share that concern about privacy,” said Ken Giles, a professor at UC Davis. “I have a swimming pool too.”

Giles uses the remote-controlled aircraft to spray crops in hard-to-reach hillside vineyards. Currently he is only spraying water to test the drone, but eventually he hopes to spray pesticides. His testing requires a permit from the FAA, something a private citizen with a drone is not required to do.

“At this point, we’re a public agency looking at the technology and conducting research. But there’s a commercial industry that’s right behind us,” Giles said. “Your neighbor next door with a GoPro camera on their drone? That’s a different concern.”

It’s a huge privacy concern for some, especially if your neighbor decides to fly near or over your property and decides to focus the drone’s camera into your home.

“Well, by 2015 the FAA will open up the skies to commercial drones. That means everybody from Google to News Corp could be flying a drone and by that time we really need to have regulations in place on how organizations should be flying drones,” Lynch said.

She said immediate privacy protection should come from the state.

“Any kind of voyeurism statute that might exist on a state or federal level would apply to a civilian use of drones,” Lynch said. “So we need to look at those statues and see if they can be expanded to private use.”

The FAA expects 10,000 commercial drones to be flying by 2020. The exact number of private citizens flying drones is unknown.

“I’m in a daze. I can’t believe this happened,” Eesha told KPIX 5.

The Saratoga teenager is one of two runners up at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which took place in Phoenix this week. Eesha beat out more than 1,600 finalists from more than 70 countries.

After picking her up from the airport Friday night, her family watched the video as she received the Young Scientist Award for her research in chemistry.

“We couldn’t believe it. So unreal,” said Reena Khare, Eesha’s mother.

“Super exciting,” Manoj Khare, Eesha’s father said.

Eesha created a tiny device that fits inside a cellphone battery, it can charge in 20 to 30 seconds.

“My project, I developed a new supercapacitor, which is basically an energy storage device which can hold a lot of energy in a small amount of volume,” Eesha described.

Eesha’s invention can also be used in car batteries.

With her $50,000 prize, Eesha will go to Harvard University this fall and fuel her passion for research. She has already received some interest from Mountain View tech giant Google.

“I will be setting the world on fire,” she said.

But first, Eesha will recharge her own batteries. Scientist or not, senior prom is on Saturday.

Morgan said the victims’ Porsche swerved and slammed into a guardrail and then veered across lanes of traffic. The man in the passenger seat, identified as Marks, was ejected or fell out of the car and was hit by another vehicle, possibly a box-style truck, he said.

The driver of that vehicle did not stop but may not have known that the vehicle struck the man, Morgan said.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Both victims were shot and it is believed that both were killed by the gunfire, but an autopsy will determine if the subsequent injuries suffered by Marks contributed to his death, Morgan said.

SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) – The numbers sum up the frenzy that has taken over the Golden State since it joined the madness over Powerball, which has seen its jackpot soar to $600 million for Saturday’s drawing.

California has sold $83 million worth of Powerball tickets since April, when it joined 42 other states that offer the game.

Since then, the most populous state has accounted for 11 percent of the game’s sales, fueling such fast-growing mega-jackpots like the latest one that is a record-breaker.

Lottery officials said the prize was growing quickly Friday because so many people were purchasing the $2 tickets. The jackpot had grown by an estimated $236 million since the last drawing on Wednesday. The last jackpot was won on March 30, so it’s been growing for about six weeks.

The $600 million jackpot is now the largest prize in the game’s history and the world’s second largest lottery prize.

The largest jackpot ever was a $656 million Mega Millions prize won in March 2012. The prize was split three ways with winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

Some states, like California, now sell tickets for both Powerball and Mega Millions.

The state expects Powerball to generate well above the originally estimated $50 million for public education, California lottery director Robert O’Neill said.

“One thing California has brought Powerball is sunshine and good fortune,” he said. “It has surprised us. We’re very happy.”

Lottery officials also expect jackpots to continue growing faster and bigger, thanks in part to a Powerball game redesign in January 2012 that increased the odds of winning some kind of prize of a lesser amount. On Wednesday, $1 million prizes were won in 16 states, and $2 million prizes were won in two states. California had six tickets among the winning ones Wednesday.

The last major jackpot win came when a New Jersey man won a $338.3 million Powerball jackpot on March 23.

Odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 175 million.

OAKLAND (CBS / AP) — Adam Rosales hit a go-ahead home run leading off the eighth inning, Josh Donaldson also connected and the Oakland Athletics beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Friday night.

Sean Doolittle (3-0) pitched the eighth for the win in relief of Jarrod Parker as the reigning AL West champions earned just their third victory in the last 11 games.

Oakland finally got to James Shields (2-4) in the late innings, nearly 10 months after he pitched a three-hit shutout here last July 31 for the Tampa Bay Rays. The right-hander matched his season high with nine strikeouts.

David Lough hit an RBI double hours after his promotion from the minors, and also made a great throw to get Brandon Moss at second as he tried to stretch a leadoff single in the fourth.

Donaldson homered leading off the seventh, tying it at 1. After that drive, Shields struck out the side on called third strikes.

Rosales then sent a 1-1 pitch over the left-field wall in the eighth for his second home run.

Parker allowed four hits in seven innings, struck out five and walked two. Doolittle yielded Lough’s one-out single in the eighth but was aided by an inning-ending double play. Grant Balfour finished with a perfect ninth for his seventh save in seven chances and 25th in a row dating to last season.

Salvador Perez hit a one-out double in the third, and Lough knocked him home two batters later. But the Royals did little else in support of Shields.

After Lorenzo Cain drew a two-out walk in the fourth, Parker retired his next eight batters in order before Cain drew another free pass in the seventh.

Lough batted leadoff and played right field after his promotion from Triple-A Omaha to take the spot of center fielder Jarrod Dyson, placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle.

His two-out double in the third put Kansas City ahead. The Royals lead the majors in batting average with two outs.

The Royals stumbled in the series opener after taking two of three against the Angels in Anaheim following a three-game sweep at home by the New York Yankees.

Shields has had some memorable outings in the Coliseum, most recently that gem last summer for the Rays. That came after he was tagged for a career high-tying 10 runs in four innings — nine in the fourth frame alone — in a 13-4 loss here on July 27, 2011, during his 16-win season.

He has just one win over his last seven starts with three losses and three no-decisions. This marked just the second outing in Shields’ first nine that the opponent didn’t counter with a former All-Star.

Royals outfielder Jeff Francoeur, who last year had 20 personal pizzas delivered to a small but animated group of A’s fans above right field in section 149, stopped by a “Bacon Friday” tailgate outside the ballpark. In 2011, Francoeur tossed a ball wrapped in a $100 bill into the elevated bleacher seats above his outfield spot, instructing fans to use it to buy bacon or beer.

NOTES: Oakland OF Chris Young (strained left quadriceps) was removed from his rehab outing Thursday with Triple-A Sacramento after he experienced some cramping. Back in Oakland a day later, he worked with the strength coach on explosive bursts. He could be ready to return Saturday. “We took him out to be proactive,” manager Bob Melvin said. “If everything goes well today, we’ll activate him tomorrow.” … This marked the first of six meetings between the clubs this year. The Royals won the 2012 season series 5-4. … The Royals used the DL for the first time in season. … The A’s announced LHP and opening day starter Brett Anderson has a stress fracture in his right foot and could miss up to six weeks. He is in a walking boot, set to be re-evaluated when it comes off in about a month. “It’s pretty frustrating, disappointing and all the other similar adjectives,” Anderson said.

DENVER (CBS / AP) — Jordan Pacheco hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the fifth and Carlos Gonzalez added a solo homer, helping the Colorado Rockies hold on for a 10-9 win over San Francisco on Friday night that snapped a 10-game skid against the Giants.

Pacheco laced his first homer of the season to left on a hanging slider from Madison Bumgarner (4-2), who failed to protect an early four-run lead.

Jorge De La Rosa (5-3) entered the game without giving up a run at Coors Field in 12 innings. He was hit hard, surrendering five runs in five innings, only to settle down enough to earn the win.

The Giants, who rallied from an early six-run deficit the night before, were on the comeback trail again Friday.

Down five, they made things interesting by scoring three times in the seventh. It could’ve been more, but Dexter Fowler made a diving catch in center to end the inning.

Then, Buster Posey made it a 10-9 game in the eighth with a two-out homer off Matt Belisle. Hunter Pence followed with a double, only to be stranded when Brett Pill grounded out.

In the ninth, Rafael Betancourt struck out the side for his 10th save in as many chances.

Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Wilin Rosario — the heart of the Rockies’ batting order — finished with a combined six hits, four RBIs and five runs scored. Gonzalez added an insurance run with his homer in the sixth.

Pablo Sandoval had three hits and drove in two runs for San Francisco, while Marco Scutaro extended his hitting streak to 16 games.

Bumgarner turned in his first clunker against the Rockies in quite a while. He had won six of his last seven starts before struggling on Friday. The lefty allowed a season-high nine runs — seven earned — in just 4 2-3 innings. His ERA climbed nearly a full run to 3.09.

Trying to preserve a one-run lead in the fifth, Bumgarner gave up a game-tying single to Rosario. A walk to D.J. LeMahieu loaded the bases for Pacheco, who sent the first pitch from Bumgarner over the fence.

Pacheco was in the lineup to give Todd Helton a break. He also had an RBI on a grounder in the second.

The Giants had a frightful night in the field, committing a season-high four errors. Two of those miscues came in the third, when Sandoval had a throwing error to begin the inning and center fielder Angel Pagan later sent a high throw to third base that ended up in the Giants’ dugout, allowing Dexter Fowler to trot home. Tulowitzki tied the game at 4 with an RBI single.

San Francisco gave Bumgarner some breathing room with a three-run second. Brandon Crawford, Scutaro and Sandoval all had RBI singles to put the Giants comfortably up, 4-0.

But Bumgarner couldn’t make it stand.

He was throwing strikes to the plate, but not to second base. After fielding a comebacker, Bumgarner tried to toss it to Crawford at short to start a double play, only to heave the ball into center. That led to an unearned run.

Scutaro gave the Giants a 1-0 lead when he jogged home on Posey’s sacrifice fly in the opening frame. The hot-hitting Scutaro is batting .485 during his streak.

These days, the Giants have made themselves quite comfortable at Coors Field, winning 14 of their last 20 in this hitter’s park. Rockies manager Walt Weiss quickly dismissed the notion the Giants have a psychological edge on his team.

“We know we’ve got to beat these guys,” Weiss said. “We know they’ve had our number over the last couple of years. They’re the world champions, so you have to go through them eventually. We know all that stuff. It’s not stuff we have to talk about, it’s already there. Got to go out and play well, find ways to win games.”

Notes: Giants RHP Tim Lincecum (3-2) will start Saturday night. … San Francisco is 31-10 against Colorado since 2011. … The Rockies altered their starting rotation, with RHP Tyler Chatwood getting the start on Saturday and RHP Juan Nicasio being bumped back to Sunday.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) — A sting operation by the San Jose Police Department resulted in the arrest on Wednesday of an elementary school teacher who believed he would meet a 13-year-old for sexual activity, police said Friday.

Grant Blair, 41, of Cupertino, was arrested without incident at a park in San Jose on suspicion of illegally meeting a minor to engage in lewd or lascivious behavior, police said.

Grant has been a teacher of fourth and fifth grade students at the Old Orchard School in Campbell for about a year, police said.

The department’s Internet Crimes Against Children task force contacted Blair online and an officer posed as a 13-year-old minor who agreed to meet Blair at the park.

When Blair showed up at the designated time and place, police arrested him at 4:45 p.m.

The Campbell Police Department interviewed about 35 students at the Old Orchard School to find out if there were any unreported acts of lewd or other inappropriate conduct, San Jose police said.

The investigation, with the cooperation of school administrators, did not discover any prior incidents, police said.

San Jose police are investigating Blair’s previous places of employment, police said.

SUNNYVALE (CBS / AP) – Yahoo may be on the verge of closing its biggest acquisition during the 10-month reign of CEO Marissa Mayer as she tries to attract more traffic and advertisers to the Internet company’s website and mobile applications.

The Sunnyvale company’s board of directors will meet Sunday evening to consider approving a $1.1 billion acquisition of online content-sharing site Tumblr in a deal Mayer negotiated, according to the technology news site All Things D. The story posted late Friday cited anonymous sources.

If Yahoo Inc.’s board signs off, the deal could be announced Monday.

In an invitation sent Friday, Yahoo promised to unveil “something special” Monday evening in New York. The event is being held in a Times Squares lounge located about two miles from Tumblr’s headquarters.

Yahoo has only said that Mayer will be on hand to unveil something related to a product. A company spokeswoman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the potential Tumblr acquisition.

Buying Tumblr would fulfill Mayer’s goal of reaching a wider audience on smartphones and tablet computers.

Tumblr serves up a constantly changing collage of stories, photos and other digital content served up by users who are increasingly connecting to the service through its mobile applications. The service is also one of the hottest sites among teens and young adults, a demographic that Mayer, 37, thinks Yahoo needs to do a better job of reaching.

If it’s completed, the Tumblr deal would be Mayer’s biggest coup—and, at the same time, the biggest risk—since she ended her 13-year career as a key executive at Google Inc. to try to snap Yahoo out of a prolonged malaise that had demoralized employees and investors alike.

Since her arrival, Mayer has been focused on redesigning several Yahoo services and bringing in more mobile engineering talent, primarily by buying a series of small startups.

None of those previous acquisitions have required Yahoo to dip too deeply into its bank account. Late last year, Yahoo paid a total of $7 million for two startups called OnTheAir and Stamped. In the first three months of this year, Yahoo snapped up three more startups for a total of $10 million, according to the company’s regulatory filings.

Tumblr, founded in 2007 by its CEO David Karp, presumably would become a pivotal part of Mayer’s effort to sell more advertising.

Mayer has been winning back investors, even though the company’s revenue is still lagging the overall growth of the booming Internet and mobile advertising market. Yahoo’s stock price has risen 69 percent under Mayer’s leadership.

Yahoo shares fell 6 cents Friday to close at $26.52.

The kidnapping report was made around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, when a 15-year-old girl told police she had been grabbed and tied up by two males in the area of Thornton Avenue and the railroad tracks, according to police.

The girl told investigators that she had freed herself by rubbing her restraints against a rock.

After speaking to investigators the girl admitted the story was false, saying that she had made it up in an effort to make her boyfriend feel bad about not taking her out for ice cream.

The girl was released to her parents.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) — A grenade found in a San Jose garage Friday afternoon was safely detonated and removed, according to police.

A resident on the 5300 block of Clovercrest Drive called police around 2 p.m. Friday to report that she had found a grenade in her garage, according to Sgt. Jason Dwyer.

Officers located the grenade, which still had the pin inserted, and called in the bomb squad.

The area around the residence was evacuated while bomb squad technicians removed the grenade and used explosives to detonate it outside, Dwyer said.

There were no injuries, and it is not known whether the grenade was live.

The source of the grenade is under investigation, but police do not believe it was planted deliberately in an effort to cause harm. No suspects have been arrested.

Residents were expected to be allowed back into their homes shortly, Dwyer said around 6:20 p.m.

SAN JOSE (CBS / AP) — The Canadian government has launched an aggressive campaign to lure Silicon Valley tech workers frustrated by U.S. visa policies northward, just as Congress wrestles with a long-sought overhaul of America’s immigration system.

Canada’s minister of citizenship, immigration and multiculturalism, Jason Kenney, arrived in the Bay area Friday for a four-day visit aimed at snapping up talent for his country’s high-tech economy by offering startup entrepreneurs a new visa.

“I think everyone knows the American system is pretty dysfunctional,” Kenney said. “I’m going to the Bay Area to spread the message that Canada is open for business; we’re open for newcomers. If they qualify, we’ll give them the Canadian equivalent of a green card as soon as they arrive.”

The new “startup visa” will grant permanent residency to entrepreneurs who can start a business in Canada and raise enough venture capital.

Earlier this week, a billboard sporting a giant red maple leaf went up in South San Francisco, part of a Canadian ad campaign encouraging tech workers to head north.

“H-1B problems?” asks the billboard on the road to Silicon Valley, referencing the temporary visa issued to skilled foreign workers in the U.S. “Pivot to Canada.”

The current immigration bill before the U.S. Senate – the result of months of negotiations among eight influential senators – is on track to greatly increase the number of highly skilled foreign workers allowed to work in the U.S. under an H-1B visa, from 65,000 to 110,000.

“The Canadian perspective is they would love to re-create Silicon Valley in Canada,” said Irene Bloemraad, a professor who chairs the Canadian studies program at UC Berkeley. “And they recognize that under the current immigration system in the United States … there are people who are having a hard time getting permanent legal status.”

Bloemraad said Kenney’s trip would underscore the differences between U.S. and Canada immigration systems. While two-thirds of immigrants to the U.S. gain their permanent residency thanks to family connections, she said, Canada’s points-based ranking system means that two-thirds of immigrants are chosen for their work skills.

Under the current H-1B system, thousands of foreign tech workers in the Silicon Valley can stay in the United States for a maximum of six years, and must stick with the employer who sponsored them.

Kenney plans to promote the new visa and to meet with tech leaders, speak with Stanford students and run the Canadian booth at this weekend’s TiEcon entrepreneurship conference in Santa Clara.

“There’s an option,” said Kenney, a member of his country’s ruling Conservative Party. “It’s north of the 49th parallel.”

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) - The owner of the Italian entry in the America’s Cup said Friday his boat will compete in this summer’s races after all, but he suggested a new precaution.

Speculation has swirled over whether Luna Rossa Challenge would pull out of sailing’s most prestigious event after a sailor on another crew died during a training run on San Francisco Bay.

Patrizio Bertelli, who also is the chief executive of fashion house Prada, last week told European media he was concerned about the safety of the high-tech boats specially built for the America’s Cup.

Standing in front of his multimillion-dollar racing yacht in Alameda on Friday, Bertelli said he would like to see races canceled if winds on the San Francisco Bay were deemed too dangerous.

His comments came after Artemis Racing’s 72-foot catamaran capsized May 9, killing Olympic gold medal winner Andrew “Bart” Simpson, who was trapped beneath the wreckage.

The boat capsized and broke into several pieces while attempting to turn downwind. Investigators have not announced a cause. The San Francisco Police Department is leading the official investigation, while organizers are conducting their own probe.

Last year Oracle Racing’s yacht capsized and was badly damaged, but no crew members were hurt. Billionaire Larry Ellison’s Oracle Racing won the America’s Cup in 2010 and choose to defend the trophy in San Francisco.

Luna Rossa, Artemis and an entry from New Zealand are scheduled to begin racing each other in July to determine who takes on Oracle in September for the trophy.

“We appreciate the vote of confidence Mr. Bertelli, president of Luna Rossa Challenge, gave to the America’s Cup continuing as planned this summer on San Francisco Bay,” America’s Cup organizer spokesman Peter Rusch said.

A panel of investigators assembled by organizers to look into the Artemis accident has asked the teams to hold off sailing until May 23.

SAN JOSE (CBS / AP) – Tejay van Garderen raced to a dominating individual time trial victory Friday in the Tour of California to extend his overall lead over Australian Michael Rogers.

Van Garderen, the 24-year-old BMC rider who grew up in Bozeman, Mont., completed the 19.6-mile route in 48 minutes, 49 seconds. He was the last of 112 riders on the hilly and technical course in the sixth stage.

“I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch, but I’m ready to win, and I think it’s about time,” said van Garderen, who finished fifth in the event in 2011 and fourth last year. I think now I’m finally mature enough to pull through to the end. I think I’m ready to do it.”

Dutchman Lieuwe Westra of Vacansoleil-DCM, the stage one winner, was second in 49:15.

Australia’s Rohan Dennis of RadioShack Leopard was third in 49:20.

Van Garderen, who took the race lead with a 10th-place finish in the fifth stage, leads Rogers, the Saxo-Tinkoff rider and three-time world time trial champion, by 1:47 seconds with two stages left in the eight-day race. Rogers finished fourth in the stage, 1:05 behind van Garderen.

Rogers and several other top contenders opted to switch from time trial to road bikes to negotiate the steep final climb.

“It was a steep climb, I think for me maybe too steep for the time trial bike, the gearing was more suitable on the road bike,” said Rogers, the 2010 Tour of California winner. “It was a perfect climb because it was steep straight away, and the speed dropped very fast. I took advantage of the speed being low and changed,” he said.

Van Garderen remained on his time trial bike the entire route.

“There was really no place that you could hold back,” said van Garderen, who was fifth last year as the highest-finishing American in the Tour de France. “I started straightaway up that climb. You just had to dig deep there. The climb up to the finish was hard. There was a couple of little downhills that you could kind of soft-pedal and catch your breath a little bit.”

Australia’s Cameron Meyer of Orica GreenEdge jumped from sixth to third overall with a sixth-place finish in the stage. He trails van Garderen by 2:57.

American Dave Zabriskie, the four-time Tour of California race runner-up, crashed out of the event while training on the time trial course.

The eight-day event continues Saturday with the 91.4-mile stage from Livermore to Danville. The route will finish with an 11.5-mile ascent to Mount Diablo

The 727-mile race concludes Sunday with an 80.7-mile morning road race from San Francisco to Santa Rosa.

REDWOOD CITY (CBS SF) — A Daly City woman who killed her ex-husband by throwing a pot of boiling water on him while he slept was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison Friday, according to prosecutors.

Jesusa Ursula Tatad, 41, was sentenced Friday after pleading no contest on April 3 to a charge of second-degree murder with an enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon, according Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti.

Tatad was divorced from Ronie Tatad at the time of the Nov. 26, 2011, attack, but the two still shared an apartment together, according to prosecutors.

Jesusa Tatad, who prosecutors say believed her ex-husband was cheating on her, allegedly waited for him to fall asleep and then poured a pot of boiling water over him, causing second- and third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body.

When the victim jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom, she reportedly hit him on the head with a baseball bat, according to the district attorney’s office.

The victim was able to run out of their apartment complex and flag down a security guard, who called 911.

He was taken to an intensive care unit at San Francisco General Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until succumbing to his injuries on Dec. 9.

Jesusa Tatad had been set to stand trial on charges of murder, assault, domestic violence, aggravated mayhem and torture before she changed her plea. She remained in custody without bail during the trial.

LOS GATOS (CBS SF) — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department has issued a notice to hikers in Los Gatos that a bat found near a trail has tested positive for the rabies virus, a deputy health officer said.

A hiker walking near the Los Gatos Creek Trail in Los Gatos discovered a dead or dying bat in mid-April, Sara Cody, deputy public health officer for the department.

The hikers reported the find to San Jose Animal Care and Services, which took the bat to the health department’s lab and detected rabies based on a test of its brain tissue, Cody said.

The department then posted a notice on the Los Gatos trail warning anyone who may have come in contact with the bat.

The virus would be active in the saliva of the bat and could spread to someone who handled it, touched its mouth, exposed it to an open wound on their body or suffered a bite from the animal, Cody said.

Instances of the rabies virus in humans are very rare, with no cases of it ever reported in the history of Santa Clara County and “only one case in all of California in recorded time,” Cody said.

Rabies, however, “is almost always fatal” to humans who become infected and so the focus is on prevention, Cody said.

Bats are the most common among animals infected with rabies and of the 25 to 55 bats the county department tests each year, two or three test positive.

Those who are exposed to rabies must undergo post exposure prophylaxis, a series of injections of a rabies vaccine.

County public health officials recommend that people never touch or feed wildlife and to report any sick or dead wildlife to Animal Care and Services, Cody said.

(KPIX 5) – From snot suckers to teething necklaces, consumers are singing the praises of cool new baby products that make the early years easier. Products their mothers wish they’d had!

Teething jewelry is one of the latest trends.

“I don’t wear jewelry because I didn’t want [my child] to eat it, so it’s kind of nice they make this stuff that she can chew on,” said one mother of two shopping at Day One Children’s boutique in San Francisco. “I’ve seen people at restaurants use these to entertain their kids”

There are various lines of stylish silicone jewelry made to go from mom’s neck to baby’s mouth. But there are also products intended to utilize mom’s mouth. Nurse Nancy Held explains the Nose Fida is the latest creation to suck snot out of bays nose. She said moms insert one end into the baby’s nose and the other end into her mouth, and then she literally sucks the snot. While it may seem counterintuitive, Held said the Nose Fida is more sanitary and more effective than alternative options. And no, moms don’t end up with mucus in their mouth.

“It stays in the container and it goes in the dishwasher…it works much better than the bulb thingy” raves a mother of two.

Now when it comes to feeding, every new mom hears that breast is best, and now there are a series of products aimed at helping mom breast feed longer.

“Milk screen does just that” says nurse Nancy Held, also the President of the Day One center for new and expecting parents. “I think a lot of women stop breast feeding a lot sooner than they might have wanted because they wanted to drink a glass of wine, so these are great because you can be reassured that there isn’t any alcohol in your milk.”

Held explains moms can test their breast milk for traces of alcohol and simply “pump and dump” until it comes out clean.

For multitasking moms, Held also recommends the breast pump bustier that allows for hands free pumping.

While it may go without saying that parents have survived for centuries without these and other new products – like eco-friendly diapers and formula mixers that double as a cappuccino maker – many parents today will tell you they’re happy they don’t have to, though.

“Some stuff is excessive,” said a mother of two as she hands her screaming child a teething necklace, “But at each age there are some things that have become kind of crucial.”
