On January 12, when the valves of the Coyote Dam were opened, a small amount of hydraulic oil leaked into the reservoir. But this is the not the first time it has happened. There have been eight such leaks since 2001.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the leaks but Santa Clara Valley Water District Spokesperson Marty Grimes said the spills have had virtually no impact on water quality.

“The amount is very small. It gets dissipated so there’s no evidence that we have any impact to the environment or to our water quality,” he said.

Grimes said they plan to replace the leaky hydraulic systems at a price of $5 million each, but that won’t happen until the reservoirs are drained as part of a retrofit project over the next 10 years.

The DA’s Office has notified the Water District that they could be fined up to $25,000 in connection with the latest spill.

Katherine Russell, 34, was behind the wheel of a Toyota 4Runner that sped past a California Highway Patrol officer in a U.S. Route 101 construction zone.

The SUV hit 100 mph by the time the CHP officer caught up with her Friday night in Rohnert Park.

She told the officer she was late to her child’s birthday party.

The CHP said Russell’s blood-alcohol was more than three times the legal limit to drive.

She was booked for investigation of drunken driving, driving without a license and various traffic violations.

The man was hit by northbound train No. 217 at about 6:40 a.m., roughly 300 yards south of Southside Drive, south of the Tamien station, spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident caused service delays of up to 40 minutes, Dunn said.

During the disruption, a bus bridge was set up between the Tamien and Diridon stations to accommodate affected riders.

The tracks reopened at about 9:45 a.m., Dunn said.

Dunn said it is not yet clear why the man was on the tracks.

The death came one day after a man was struck and wounded by a train on the Caltrain tracks near the South San Francisco station.

That man was hit at about 6 p.m. Tuesday just south of the station. He survived and was taken to a hospital, Dunn said.

Dunn said Wednesday’s death marks the sixth fatality on Caltrain right-of-way this year. There were 16 fatalities in 2011.

CHP officers responded to reports of the collision on the corner of San Tomas Expressway and Monroe Street at 11:44 p.m. Tuesday.

A Toyota Camry was traveling north on the San Tomas Expressway when he saw the bicyclist crossing the road in a crosswalk at Monroe Street, according to the CHP.

The driver of the Toyota had a green light and tried to brake to avoid colliding with the bicyclist, but was unsuccessful.

The bicyclist, an 18-year-old San Jose resident, suffered severe injuries and was transported to Valley Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital around 12:45 a.m.

The driver of the Toyota stopped and cooperated with investigators, who blocked off Monroe Street for several hours. Alcohol or drugs is not suspected to be a factor in the collision, according to the CHP.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, CHP officers said.

California High-Speed Rail Authority chairman Dan Richard said during a Tuesday state Senate hearing that the exemption would avoid any legal delays caused by an injunction, a possibility as agriculture interests gear up for a court fight.

Richard had previously insisted the authority would not seek an outright exemption from state or federal environmental laws.

Richard stated at the hearing that if the project ends up in a lawsuit he would hope the matter would involve mitigations rather than an injunction.

Officers responded at about 12:05 a.m. to a ShotSpotter activation in the 1700 block of Sunnydale Avenue and found a man lying between two buildings suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

The 23-year-old victim, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 3 a.m., Esparza said.

No arrests had been in the case as of Wednesday morning, and no suspect information was immediately available, he said.

“Who was just the MVP in the league? There has to be something there,” Madden told the KCBS morning crew. “We know that no one’s perfect.”

Madden said there is more criticism and higher expectations for a big-money team like Miami.

“I don’t know that anyone is rooting for that to work, when guys can put together an all star team and buy a championship…. Down deep I think you root against that… You kind of say, well, not so fast.”

Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker signed a $9.5 million contract with the Patriots for the upcoming season. Madden said Welker has exceeded all expectations.

“He’s one of those guys that — forgetting size and knowing how to separate and all that stuff — he just knows how to play football. He’s very, very good at it. They play him in that slot and the minute you want to go somewhere else and look at something else, he’s going to eat you up there in the middle.” (7:00)

Richmond firefighters responded to the fire on the 600 block of Ohio St. at about 3:35 a.m. Wednesday, said Richmond Police Lt. Bisa French.

When crews arrived, they found an elaborate pot-growing operation with the entire second floor of the two-story building filled possibly more than 1,000 plants, said French. “They are in numerous stages of growth,” she said. “It looks like a very intricate operation in which they’ve been growing marijuana here for quite some time.”

PG&E crews were able to quickly cut power to the property.

One person, believed to have been guarding the grow, was at the warehouse when authorities arrived but was not arrested, French said.

Investigators are working to identify those responsible for the grow operation and have served a search warrant at the warehouse, French said.

French said investigators have not found any paperwork indicating that the grow is legal.

The electrical fire was extinguished quickly, and caused some smoke damage to the warehouse, French said.

Hayes-White said she stopped paying spousal support to her ex-husband about 14 months ago following an incident in which her ex-husband, Robert White, grabbed and choked one of their sons while under the influence of alcohol.

KCBS, CBS 5 and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier:

White pleaded no contest in December to a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment and cruelty and was serving his sentence on a county sheriff’s detail and living in a rehab house.

A judge ruled last week that the city has to start deducting payments from Hayes-White’s $302,000 annual salary, though it’s still not clear if she will be asked to cover the thousands in backlogged payments.

It’s an interesting situation because of the ongoing battle between San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and suspended Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi. Some of Mirkarimi’s supporters may cry foul because they said Lee is singling out Mirkarimi while the fire chief is also breaking the law. It is still unclear how Lee will respond to the situation.

The couple has a history of drama – in 2005, White called police to report that his wife hit him over the head with a pint glass in their San Francisco home. No charges were ever filed in that case.

Santa Clara County Deputy Counsel Michael Rossi said the pine boxes were found in February when crews were doing excavation work to prepare for the construction of a new loading dock at Valley Medical Center.

KCBS’ Chris Filippi Reports:

“We don’t have any visual confirmation of what’s in those boxes,” he said. “However, some follow-up research has indicated that there was a cemetery located in that portion of the Valley Medical Center campus between 1875 and 1935.”

Rossi said that upon discovery, the boxes were immediately reburied and that all told, there could be as many as 1,450 sets of remains in the area.

He said many hospitals used to have pauper cemeteries, otherwise known as potter’s fields, for the indigent and for those whose families could not be found.

Now, the county is seeking a court order to remove the boxes.

“Under the health and safety code, the country is required to obtain a court order to remove the human remains,” Rossi said.

Santa Clara County officials are looking to hire an archeologist to examine the remains. If any are identified, Rossi said that efforts will be made to contact relatives.

Richmond Police Lt. Bisa French said 26-year-old Richmond resident Todd Gillard had a $1.5 million warrant for his arrest when he was found at an apartment complex on on Gatley and Ells streets around 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

Gillard had been fitted with an electronic tracking device and had cut it off at some point, according to French. He is suspected in a February 1 shooting at Hilltop Mall which injured one person.

Following a 7-hour standoff with police and SWAT units, Gillard surrendered peacefully at 5 a.m., said French.

Other nearby apartments evacuated during the standoff, while some residents were warned to stay indoors.

No one was hurt during the incident.

Police responded to a report of a man down in the road near the corner of Dougherty and Fall Creek roads at around 11:30 p.m., Lt. Herb Walters said.

The bicyclist, a man between 55 and 60 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, Walters said.

There were no witnesses, but investigators found a vehicle part at the scene and used it to determine that the vehicle that fled the collision was a 2010 or 2011 Mercedes Benz.

The car had been traveling on Dougherty Road toward San Ramon when it collided with the bicyclist.

The Mercedes may be black and possibly has front-end damage, Walters said.

The name of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of his next of kin, Walters said.

Playing for the sixth time in 11 days, Los Angeles gave San Antonio its toughest first half of the playoffs before fading fast. And unlike their stunning Game 1 comeback at Memphis in the first round, the Clippers didn’t have the wind this time.

Manu Ginobili added 22 points for the Spurs, who’ve won 15 in a row. It’s the longest winning streak sustained in the NBA playoffs since the 2004 Spurs won 17 straight.

“It’s the playoffs. It’s going to be physical. We knew that coming in,” Duncan said. “We just expected to attack the basket as much as possible.”

Eric Bledsoe led the Clippers with 23 points.

Game 2 is Thursday night.

That gives the beat-up and banged-up Clippers one full day of rest — which is all the time they’ve had to recover between games for the past week and a half.

Los Angeles couldn’t even fly home first after knocking out the Grizzlies on Sunday in Game 7 of a grueling series that had the Clippers hobbling next to Texas. Blake Griffin scored 15 points in 28 minutes a day after estimating his sprained left knee had him feeling “80 percent” at best.

The Clippers said the injury is bad enough that their All-Star and leading scorer might be missing up to two weeks if this were the regular season. But unlike in Game 7 on Sunday, Griffin didn’t take a seat in the fourth quarter until the Spurs were safely ahead in the final minutes.

Rookie Kawhi Leonard added 16 points, hitting all three of his 3s, and Danny Green added 15 points for the Spurs.

The marquee matchup of the series — All-Star point guards Tony Parker and Chris Paul — was a fizzle. Paul, who ended the first round with an aching hip, scored just six points and didn’t make a single basket in the second half. Parker had seven points and 11 assists.

Caron Butler scored 15 points and Nick Young had 13 for the Clippers. Los Angeles cut the deficit to single digits with a 10-burst in the fourth quarter before San Antonio, which hasn’t lost in a month, ran away with its 11th double-digit victory during this dominating winning streak.

The Clippers didn’t even need San Antonio’s help getting more bumps and bruises: Mo Williams, already playing with his sore right fingers taped, took a lump on the head when teammate Reggie Evans kicked him with an errant foot after Williams fell on his back in the lane.

Williams wobbled when he tried standing, sat back down, and the Clippers burned a timeout. He never left the game, but the Clippers weren’t getting any fresher.

Parker, meanwhile, finally felt the hard knocks and slow-him-down shoves that Utah repeatedly promised but never delivered in the first round. Sometimes, the All-Star looked in vain to officials when the whistle didn’t blow. When that didn’t work once in the first quarter, he kept jabbering about a no-call on the last possession while lining up to shoot free throws on the current one.

Popovich, pacing and sensing an impending technical foul, silenced his leading scorer.

“Tony!” Popovich snapped from the sideline. “Shoot!”

Parker waved off the NBA Coach of the Year — he was under control. But his frustrations didn’t end there. He was 1 for 9 despite playing 38 minutes, scoring all but two of his points at the foul line.

Notes: Before this became the deepest Spurs team yet under Popovich, Butler said he came so close to signing with the Spurs after the lockout that he canceled a flight to San Antonio when the Clippers counteroffered. “They made a great pitch,” Butler said. …Leonard finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting, the highest finish for a Spurs player since Ginobili finished fourth in 2003. Said Popovich: “He’s done a good enough job to make me trust him to be in the starting lineup. I’m happy for him.”

David West scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, George Hill added 15 and the Indiana Pacers took home-court advantage away from Miami by beating the Heat 78-75 in Game 2 of the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal series Tuesday night.

LeBron James scored 28 points for Miami and Dwyane Wade finished with 24, but both missed big chances for the Heat late. James missed two free throws with 54.3 seconds left and Miami down one, and Wade was short on a layup that would have tied the game with 16 seconds remaining.

Mario Chalmers’ 3-pointer to tie bounced away on the final play, and the series was tied 1-1.

Danny Granger scored 11 points and Paul George added 10 for Indiana, which took advantage of Heat forward Chris Bosh’s absence and outrebounded Miami 50-40.

Game 3 is Thursday in Indianapolis.

James had a chance to give Miami the lead with 1:22 left, but his shot was blocked from behind by George, who was fouled two seconds later. He missed both free throws, keeping the Indiana lead at 76-75. And after Wade missed a jumper, James was fouled by Granger — his sixth — battling for the rebound with 54.3 seconds remaining.

James couldn’t connect on either, and the Heat didn’t score again.

Bosh is expected to miss the rest of the series with a strained abdominal muscle. Without him, James and Wade combined for 52 points — and no other Miami player scored more than five.

A dreadful third quarter by Miami — 3 for 17 shooting — allowed Indiana to lead by as much as 11, before the emotions picked up considerably in the fourth.

Wade was steaming when he missed a shot after trying to create contact with Indiana’s Dahntay Jones with 9:53 left. As Wade argued, Jones went the other way and set Leandro Barbosa up for a score that put the Pacers up 63-56.

Chalmers turned the ball over on the next possession, and as the Pacers took off for what set up as a 2-on-none break, Wade caught Darren Collison from behind and knocked him over. A flagrant-1 was called, Collison hit both free throws, the Indiana lead was nine and tensions were suddenly high.

It all seemed to spark Miami.

The Heat scored the next six points, James — who got hit in the head by Granger with 7:25 left, sparking a bit of shoving that led to double-technicals given to both players — added a putback off an offensive rebound and Wade did the same about a minute later, getting Miami within 69-66 with 5:57 left.

James missed a free throw that would have tied it with 4:30 remaining, but after George got the rebound, James dove in to create a jump ball situation. The MVP easily won the tap, sending it to Wade, whose bank shot over West put Miami back on top 72-71.

Barbosa scored on the next Indiana possession. The Pacers weren’t rattled, and left celebrating minutes later.

Indiana scored 16 points in the first seven minutes of the first half, then scored 17 in the next 17 minutes. And even after a drought like that, Miami’s lead was only 38-33 at the break.

George missed four shots in a 60-second span early on, setting the tone for an icy-cold half by the Pacers. Indiana was up 16-9 midway through the first when the Heat went to a smaller lineup that paid quick dividends.

Three baskets at the rim — a layup by Wade, then James firing a pass to Turiaf for a dunk, followed by a Wade touch pass to James for another slam — erased most of the early deficit, and defense did the rest. Indiana missed 24 of 29 shots in one stretch, and after Hibbert used his size advantage to get three shots in the first 1:11, he only got two attempts over the rest of the half.

Miami was 0-for-7 on shots that would have pushed its margin to double digits in the first half, continuing a trend from Game 1. Neither team ever led the series opener by more than nine either, and when George made a 3-pointer with 6:09 left in the third, the Pacers had pulled into a 46-all tie. A steal and dunk by George followed on the next possession, putting the Pacers back on top.

Before long, the Pacers had that first 10-point edge of the series. Collison’s jumper with 1:29 left in the third put Indiana up 59-49, and the margin was 61-52 entering the fourth.

For as bad as Indiana’s first half was offensively, Miami’s third quarter was equally dreadful — the Heat were outscored 28-14 on 3-for-17 shooting in the period, the third-worst shooting effort by the reigning East champs in any quarter this season.

Los Angeles dominated the opener and was even better in Game 2, withstanding Phoenix’s initial push and string of penalties for a 2-0 series lead.

Dwight King scored his third goal in two games and Quick tied a team record with his third career playoff shutout to give the Kings a dominating lead heading into Game 3 Thursday night in Los Angeles.

The Kings have won nine straight road playoff games in two seasons, matching the NHL record set by the New York Islanders from 1982-83.

The Islanders won the Stanley Cup both of those years.

Quick matched Felix Potvin’s team record for playoff shutouts and Carter finished off his first career playoff hat trick in the third period, securing the Kings’ seventh straight win overall.

The Coyotes played better early and fell apart late, becoming frustrated after being unable to contain the more-skilled Kings.

Phoenix was hit with a string of penalties starting late in the second period, including a game misconduct to captain Shane Doan for boarding Kings center Trevor Lewis. Martin Hanzal also received one for boarding Dustin Brown in the third period and the Coyotes had 13 penalties for 56 minutes — most coming after the final 5 minutes of the second period.

The Kings won the opener 4-2 by outplaying and outhustling Phoenix.

Knowing Phoenix’s makeup, the Kings figured to get more of a pushback in Game 2.

And the Coyotes were much more aggressive early, winning some of the individual battles they lost in Game 1 while creating some decent scoring chances.

Even with all of Phoenix’s hard work and a couple of line changes by coach Dave Tippett, the Kings still managed to score first. King got it, redirecting a shot by Drew Doughty that beat Mike Smith stick side late in the period.

Hard work in the corners by Mike Richards set up Los Angeles’ second goal, by Carter. He muscled the puck past Smith’s glove side as he was going down on a feed from Dustin Penner that made it 2-0 early in the second period.

“I’ve been working hard in practice to get my game where I wanted it,” Carter said.

Then things completely unraveled for the Coyotes.

Doan, who was suspended three games for elbowing earlier in the season, was given a game misconduct and a five-minute boarding penalty for ramming Lewis from behind. Defenseman Keith Yandle was already in the penalty box and Daymond Langkow joined him after a slashing penalty, giving Los Angeles a two-man advantage for more than 2 minutes.

Brown was sent off for diving on a slash by Smith, but that didn’t bother the Kings. Carter scored his second a few seconds later on a redirect of a shot by Anze Kopitar, putting Los Angeles up 3-0.

“It’s no secret we been struggling a bit with the power play and to get some goals will give us confidence on it,” Carter said. “We have some pretty skilled guys out there on the power play.”

With the Coyotes racking up penalties seemingly on every shift, Carter finished them off with his fifth career hat trick, punching in a rebound with the Kings on a two-man advantage after Hanzal’s hit on Brown.

Notes: The Kings were without D Colin Fraser, out of the lineup attending to a family matter. … Coyotes LW Ray Whitney played in his 100th career playoff game. D Michael Stone played his first with Adrian Aucoin still out of the lineup and David Schlemko still not fully healthy. … Rocker Alice Cooper, who lives in the Valley, attended the game. … The last team to win seven straight road playoff games in one season was Chicago in 2010.

Stroll around the Conservatory of Flowers, or cross bridges in the peaceful Japanese Tea Garden. Then stop for a coffee nearby in the De Young Museum Café.

The app, which was released earlier this month, is more Flipboard or Pinterest than Facebook or Twitter, as it serves very much as a visual app, rather than just focusing on social media.

Marco Scutaro homered off closer Santiago Casilla to lead off the ninth inning and lift the Rockies past the mistake-prone San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Tuesday night. The Giants committed three errors to wipe out a solid start by Lincecum and a late-inning rally from three runs down.

“It’s not a step forward or backward. It’s just another game,” Lincecum said. “I put myself in tough situations and I couldn’t put a stop to it. I’ve been known to get out of jams like that. I feel bad I couldn’t pick the guys up and keep the score where it was. I don’t want to put any more pressure on the guys to have to pick me up.”

Scutaro smacked a 92 mph fastball from Casilla (0-2) just over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season after Colorado blew a three-run lead in the eighth.

Troy Tulowitzki, Michael Cuddyer, Carlos Gonzalez and Jordan Pacheco each drove in a run as the Rockies took advantage of San Francisco’s errors to snap a four-game losing streak.

Rex Brothers (2-2) struck out Brandon Belt and Melky Cabrera with the bases loaded in the eighth. Rafael Betancourt struck out Nate Schierholtz looking with two on in the ninth—following a questionable check swing a pitch earlier that had Rockies manager Jim Tracy infuriated—for his seventh save in eight chances.

“Stuff like that,” Brothers said, “it hasn’t been easy yet.”

Colorado’s Jeremy Guthrie—a former Stanford standout—allowed four hits and one unearned run in 5 1-3 innings in his first start since April 22. He had gone on the disabled list after falling off his bicycle on the way to the ballpark last month.

Lincecum lasted seven innings, striking out seven and walking three for the Giants. At the very least, Lincecum’s lethargic starts this season finally disappeared.

Not much else about the final result did.

Gregor Blanco singled leading off the third, stole second and advanced to third on catcher Pacheco’s throwing error. He scored on Brandon Belt’s fly out to give San Francisco a 1-0 lead.

A night after taking a foul ball from teammate Dexter Fowler off his left leg, Tulowitzki played through soreness and singled in the fourth to score Gonzalez from second for the tying run. Gonzalez’s one-out double that landed inches inside the left-field chalk was the first hit off Lincecum, who gave up little on a cold, foggy night under the lights in San Francisco’s windy waterfront ballpark.

“Frustrations will happen,” Lincecum said. “I have to do my best to take care of the things I can control.”

What Lincecum couldn’t control cost him—and San Francisco—a win.

Giants third baseman Joaquin Arias left in the fourth after a pitch hit his left forearm. X-rays showed no break, and the team diagnosed Arias with a bruise. Charlie Culberson replaced him at second, moving Emmanuel Burriss to third.

Burriss blew an infield pop by Tyler Colvin for what should’ve been the final out of Colorado’s fifth. He was charged with an error, but San Francisco caught a break when Pacheco—who had reached on a double—only advanced to third on the play. Jonathan Herrera flied out to center to end the inning.

The Rockies refused to let another gift go unwrapped.

Tulowitzki’s line-drive single to center in the sixth rolled under the glove of a charging Angel Pagan, allowing the slow-footed Tulowitzki—who might’ve scored if healthy—to easily jog to third on the error when the ball rolled all the way to the 399-foot sign. Cuddyer followed with an RBI double and Pacheco’s sacrifice fly put the Rockies ahead 3-1.

“I want these guys to go all out,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “That’s always a tough play—a ball coming right at you. He was trying to make a great catch and it got by him. I would have felt worse if he backed off and caught it on one hop.”

The Giants added another error when catcher Buster Posey threw behind shortstop Brandon Crawford trying to nab Colvin at second. Gonzalez drove in Colvin from third with two outs.

Even still, San Francisco had its shots.

Cabrera’s two-run double off Josh Outman highlighted a three-run seventh for the Giants. Pagan’s two-out single against Matt Belisle evened the score at 4-all before Culberson struck out with Pagan at third.

“It’s good to win,” Tracy said, “but let’s be mindful of what is still not right.”

NOTES: The Rockies optioned RHP Carlos Torres to Triple-A Colorado Springs to make room for Guthrie to come off the disabled list. … San Francisco opens a two-game series Wednesday against St. Louis, while Colorado returns home for a pair with Arizona.

CUPERTINO (CBS SF/AP) – Aaron Sorkin is going from Facebook to Apple. Sony Pictures officials say the Oscar-winning writer will write a screenplay based on the Steve Jobs biography.

Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal said Sorkin will make the film about the late Apple founder “everything that Jobs himself was: Captivating, entertaining and polarizing.”

June 6, 1961

Sorkin (pictured) won the adapted screenplay Academy Award for 2010′s “The Social Network.” The 50-year-old writer was nominated in the same category for 2011′s “Moneyball.”

His other credits include “Charlie Wilson’s War” and “A Few Good Men.” He also created TV’s “The West Wing.”

Researchers now believe something commonly carried by cats could be controlling you, a tiny parasite called Toxoplasma Gondi.

“This is a very clever parasite,” said Dr. Patricia Conrad, an expert in the parasite at the U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Conrad added that some people consider toxoplasma to be the most successful parasite in the entire world.

The parasite can only sexually reproduce in the intestines of cats. Infected cats then excrete millions of microscopic eggs, called oocysts, in the soil, in water, and in litter boxes. That’s why pregnant women are told not to handle litter boxes.

“There is a risk that then the parasite will go from the mother to her baby,” said Dr. Jose Montoya, an expert in infectious diseases at Stanford University – as well as the Director of the Toxoplasma Serology Laboratory at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. The Lab is the national reference lab for toxoplasmosis in the United States.

If a pregnant woman passes the parasite to her unborn child, the baby can then suffer serious brain damage, even die, explained Dr. Montoya.

But because cats poop outdoors, infected cats excrete far more oocysts into the environment. These oocysts endure for months, if not years. Many Americans who don’t own cats or handle litter boxes can get infected. They pick it up in the environment.

According to the Centers for Disease control, an estimated 60 million Americans are infected with the parasite, and they actually are chronically infected and show little ill effect.

“So it’s our immune system that really helps to control the parasite keep it in check,” explained Dr. Conrad.

But now there’s growing evidence that the parasite can creep into your brain, and directly manipulate your behavior.

“It’s a little creepy actually. It’s almost like a science fiction story but it’s probably what’s actually happening,” said Dr. Robert Yolken, an infectious disease specialist and neuro-virologist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

His research found people infected with toxoplasma were two to three times more likely to develop schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. He said that, while the parasite doesn’t directly cause mental illness, he believes strongly that toxoplasma is a risk factor.

The work of Czech scientist Dr. Jaroslav Flegr takes it a step further. Dr. Flegr is an evolutionary biologist at Charles University in Prague. Flegr discovered that individuals chronically infected with the parasite develop subtle personality changes. The organism appears to tweak brain circuits, slow down reaction times, and cause individuals to take more risks.

“He postulates that this is due to the fact that they don’t actually have the right conception of risk, of what its like, say, to cross the street when a car is coming against the light,” said Dr. Yolken.

But why would a parasite steer you into oncoming traffic, potentially killing you?

“It wants to survive and it’s very good at it,” commented Dr. Conrad.

Dr Conrad’s team studies the parasite in wild and domestic animals. In her Davis lab they grow the parasite in cultures and then cryogenically freeze them for future research.

Dr. Conrad said that since the parasite ultimately needs to get back into a cat to sexually reproduce, a number of studies — including one very good one by Stanford researchers — show how it performs a pretty nifty trick: If mice are infected with toxoplasma Gondi, Conrad said, the parasite goes to their brain and it alters their behavior.

Instead of running away from cats, mice will flock to cat urine. Here you find cats. The cat then eats the mouse, and the parasite gets back into the cat.

“That’s fatal attraction for a mouse.” said Dr. Conrad.

And while we’re not mice, once upon a time we were potential prey for bigger cats, said Dr. Flegr. That might explain why the parasite slows us down. It wants to get back into a bigger cat.

Not only that, but a small study done by Flegr on students found, when infected with toxoplasma, the male students preferred the scent of cat urine.

Dr. Montoya cautions while there is no hard evidence linking parasite to mind control in humans, he said that it’s worth studying. If you can prevent an infection, he said, it’s better than trying to treat the illness after the fact.

“The more we know about the potential consequences of this parasite, in the brains of humans, the more we will know where to act and how to prevent those unwanted consequences,” said Dr. Montoya.

But in the meantime, as a precaution, should we get rid of cats? For that answer, we turned to the experts and every person with whom we spoke was emphatic:

“Oh please no,” said Dr. Yolken, who owns cats.

“Absolutely not,” said Dr. Montoya, who has studied and done research on toxoplasma for 20 years.

“Of course not,” said Dr. Flegr who added cats really benefit our health.

“Everyone in our lab has cats. I have three cats,” said Dr. Conrad.

There are steps you can take to protect your cat. Cats get infected by eating infected wildlife, such as birds or rodents.

If you can, keep your cat indoors. Dr. Conrad said they will live longer, be healthier and then stay away from infected creatures.

If your cat needs to go outdoors, make sure they’re always well-fed so that they don’t hunt birds and mice for food. Also, make sure to bring them to the vet for regular checkups.

You can also put a bell on their collar to scare away their prey.

There are steps you can take to protect yourself. Wash all fruits and vegetables very carefully. If you camp, drink bottled water. Don’t drink water from streams or rivers. And since the parasite can be found in warm blooded mammals, cook your meat and game very thoroughly.

Ryan Young, a meat clerk at the Safeway in Del Rey Oaks, said he was doing his job when he saw Quyen Van Tran beating his girlfriend, who is six months pregnant.

“Every few seconds he would turn around and push her and then he actually kicked her,” Young said. “I told him to calm down and he was just irate.”

Young said Tran refused to stop and jumped in to stop the assault.

“I saw no one was intervening in the situation and I just became afraid for her safety and also other customers safety,” Young said. “The guy was out of control and pretty much lost it in there.”

Chief Ron Langford of the Del Ray Oaks Police said if Ryan did not intervene, things could have become much worse for the victim.

But Young said Safeway has suspended him without pay, for supposedly violating company policy. The store has not given word on if or when he will be allowed back.

“We understand about policy, but at some point someone has to do something. And in my mind, in this case Ryan did the right thing,” Langford said.

Young has no income, while his wife is five months pregnant.

“It’s a tremendous amount of stress on me, my wife as well. And I don’t think anyone should have to second-guess themselves or feel bad doing something that was right,” he said.

Even if Safeway doesn’t agree, Young said he has no regrets.

“How many people have been injured, murdered, whatever in front of everyone because everyone looks the other way and no one wants to get involved?” he said.

Safeway’s corporate offices have not responded to CBS 5’s requests for comment as of Tuesday night.

A manager at a Safeway store in San Francisco told CBS 5 he wasn’t sure of an official policy, but he said employees are supposed to contact store security or a manager if they see a conflict inside the store.

Proposition A’s backers include community activist Tony Kelly and retired Judge Quentin Kopp, who said the city’s current garbage company, Recology, has an unhealthy monopoly over San Francisco’s waste collection services thanks to a local law passed in 1932.

That law, which created a nonpartisan board to set the rates for the city’s garbage services, would be amended by Proposition A to set up competitive bidding for five different aspects of the services.

Companies would have to bid on separate contracts for residential collection, commercial collection, recovery and processing of recyclable materials, transfer and transportation of the residual waste, and disposal or conversion of that waste.

Kelly said Recology currently receives about $220 million annually from residential and commercial ratepayers in the city. He said that figure could be reduced by as much as 25 percent through competitive bidding.

He cites a 2011 report ordered by the city’s Local Agency Formation Commission that found that San Francisco was the only one of 71 Bay Area cities that did not have a franchise agreement with its garbage company.

“We’re really getting ripped off,” Kelly said.

However, the No on A campaign, funded primarily by Recology, argues that Proposition A would throw into turmoil a system that works.

“This is a system people are comfortable with,” said Brian Leubitz, outreach director for the campaign. “This measure would create confusion where there’s none now and really isn’t necessary.”

Leubitz pointed out that Recology’s current residential garbage rates are right around the Bay Area median and that the company “offers a service that’s really unmatched in the Bay Area,” including what it touts as a nation-leading 78 percent waste diversion rate.

He said Proposition A has brought together groups accustomed to opposing each other, from the local Democratic and Republican parties to labor and business councils, almost all of whom have come out against the proposal.

Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, six other supervisors, as well as state Sens. Mark Leno and Leland Yee and Assemblymembers Tom Ammiano and Fiona Ma are among the city and state officials who oppose the plan.

The ordinance was crafted “without the input of stakeholders or city officials in the type of transparency that San Francisco has found over the past few years really works best for the city,” Leubitz said.

He added that the proposal “offers no guarantee for lower rates but does guarantee an increased bureaucracy at City Hall” while also putting at risk around 900 existing garbage collection and disposal jobs.

Kelly acknowledged that the ordinance faces stiff opposition, likening its chances of passage to “the odds of Luke blowing up the Death Star” in the movie “Star Wars.”

He said, “If you’re trying to go up against a monopoly, they have a lot of resources. Why? Because they’re a monopoly.”

The ordinance needs majority approval to pass.

Proposition A is one of only two local measures on San Francisco’s ballot for the June 5 election.

The second, Proposition B, is an advisory, non-binding measure encouraging the city to limit commercial activities at Coit Tower, which is visited by more than 200,000 people annually.

Members of a group called the Protect Coit Tower Committee gathered signatures to get the measure on the ballot in response to San Francisco’s request last year for proposals by contractors to lease and operate the elevator, food and beverage concession stands and gift shop at the tower.

Along with leasing operations at the tower, the city would also allow contractors to hold private, late-night parties there.

Proposition B calls for strict limits on such events and for the revenue gained from the tower to be funneled toward preservation of the tower’s historic murals.

The San Francisco Parks Alliance is one of the groups opposing the measure, saying revenue from the tower should also go toward other parts of the city’s park and recreation system.

South San Francisco-based Genentech has won the right to use its experimental drug Crenezumab in the government-backed trial.

Genentech Executive Richard Scheller said the trial will be done in Colombia, where members of an extended family of about 5,000 people carry a gene that causes early onset Alzheimer’s, with some showing symptoms in their mid-30s.

KCBS’ Anna Duckworth Reports:

“We will test our drug in people who have this mutation prior to the onset of the disease to see if we can prevent the disease from occurring,” Scheller said.

Crenezumab has proven in patients already diagnosed with Alzheimer’s to break down build-up of a protein in the brain believed responsible for the disease’s debilitating effects. But it didn’t improve thinking and memory.

Scheller said the clinical trial will last for five years.

“If the drug is working extremely well, we might even be able to see positive signs of efficacy after two years,” he said.

$16 million of the trial’s $100 million cost is being paid for with a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant.

Another $15 million is coming from a non-profit health organization with Genentech footing the remainder of the bill.

Sagan swung wide to the right to edge Heinrich Haussler of Australia for the third day en route to claiming the 115.3-mile San Jose to Livermore road race in 4 hours, 50 minutes and 49 seconds.

“It’s a surprise for me,” said Sagan, the former junior world mountain bike titlist who tallied his sixth win of the season and 29th of his four-year pro career. “I want to say thank you to my team because they did very good work today.”

Former world road titlist Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) of Belgium, the world’s No. 1-ranked cyclist, was third.

“This race is very hard for me,” Sagan said. “The long climbs and the time trial are not so good for me. I’ll try very hard to stay in the (yellow) jersey for another day. But I don’t think I’ll keep it after the time trial.”

Sagan, of the Liquigas-Cannondale team, lead’s Haussler, of Garmin-Brracuda, by 12 seconds, with five stages of the eight-day race remaining. Jeffry Louder of UnitedHealthcare is third overall, trailing by 24 seconds.

Defending champion Chris Horner (RadioShack-Nissan) of Bend, Ore., finished in the main field for the third straight day and is 15th overall among the remaining field of 123. He trails Sagan by 30 seconds.

Steve Morabito of Switzerland and Stephen Cummings of Britain, both of the BMC team based in Santa Rosa, didn’t start the stage after crashing late in stage 2. Morabito has shoulder and elbow injuries, while Cummings reinjured a wrist he fractured earlier in the season. Andrew Dahlheim (Bissell) of Dallas, Texas, abandoned the race during the third stage.

The eight-day race continues Wednesday with the race’s longest stage, a 130.2-mile road race from Sonora to Clovis. The 735-mile event ends Sunday with a 42.6-mile road race from Beverly Hills to Los Angeles.

Mike Trout went 3 for 4 with a homer and three runs scored for the Angels, who finally produced enough offense to back a strong performance by Santana (2-6). The Dominican right-hander retired 16 in a row early, winning his second straight start after a rocky beginning to the season.

Bartolo Colon (3-4) allowed 12 hits while pitching into the seventh inning for the A’s, who were off to an AL-best 8-4 start in May.

A day after Oakland sent Los Angeles to its major league-worst eighth shutout loss this season, the Angels snapped the A’s four-game winning streak at Angel Stadium, handing Oakland its fifth scoreless defeat of the year.

Alberto Callaspo had a run-scoring double for the Angels. Pujols went 3 for 4 with three infield singles, pushing the $240 million first baseman’s average from .197 to .212.

Last week in Minnesota, Santana snapped a nine-game losing streak dating to last season. Before that 6-2 win, he received just three total runs of support from his teammates in his first six starts combined this season, easily the worst run support in the majors.

Santana retired every batter between Cliff Pennington’s first-inning double and Jemile Weeks’ bouncing single under Pujols’ glove in the sixth, striking out six of nine on one trip through the order. He doffed his cap to the cheering crowd after leaving in the eighth inning, and relievers Scott Downs and Ernesto Frieri finished.

Colon wasn’t awful, but the 38-year-old couldn’t match the eight scoreless innings he threw at Angel Stadium last month. He’s 0-3 with 43 hits allowed in his last five starts since a 3-1 beginning to the season.

Los Angeles rallied for two runs in the third inning when Trout singled and scored standing up on Callaspo’s double down the right-field line. Pujols then drove home Callaspo from second when Weeks knocked down his grounder to short, but couldn’t make a play.

The Angels added another run on another tough-to-play grounder to short by Pujols in the fifth. Oakland finally solved Santana in the sixth, loading the bases on a single and two walks, but Santana struck out Seth Smith on three pitches.

Trout hit his third homer of the season to straightaway center leading off the seventh. The 20-year-old rookie is cementing an everyday job in center field since his latest call up on April 28, going 18 for 49 over the last 12 games while adding his usual blazing speed and standout fielding.

NOTES: A’s manager Bob Melvin said CF Yoenis Cespedes is doing baseball-related activities while he’s on the DL with a strained muscle in his hand. The Cuban slugger is allowed to do everything except swing a bat. “He’s a hardworking kid,” Melvin said. “There’s no way you’re going to be able to tell him to sit and not do anything.” …. Los Angeles welcomes the White Sox to Angel Stadium for another two-game series Wednesday, with Jerome Williams facing Gavin Floyd. The hit-and-run was reported at 11:18 p.m. Saturday at the large intersection where Columbus Avenue and Stockton and Green streets meet, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychak said.

The 62-year-old victim was walking east across Columbus Street outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by a white SUV traveling north on Columbus, Andraychak said.

The victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he remains in critical condition as of Monday, according to Andraychak.

The driver fled the area after striking the victim and the suspect and vehicle had not been found as of Monday afternoon, he said.

The vehicle is described as a late-90s model Chevrolet SUV, possibly a Suburban, with tinted windows and a California license plate with the last two numbers “24,” Andraychak said. The vehicle may have front-end damage to it caused by the collision, he said.

While most cities and counties request notification of a change in a pet’s status, Fremont’s Animal Care and Control Dept. requires notification. Failure to inform the city can lead to fines of up to $1,000.

Pet owner Rochelle Oral found out about the rule the hard way. Back in April, Oral received only part of her state tax refund. The remaining $480 had been intercepted by the city of Fremont. The reason: when Oral moved from the city of Fremont to Danville four years ago “we didn’t tell Fremont that we would no longer be licensing (our dog) there,” Oral said.

A notice on the City of Fremont’s website states “pet owners are required to update the licensing department of any change in their animal’s status.” But a handful of Fremont pet owners interviewed by ConsumerWatch were all unaware of the requirement.

Susan Mundy of Fremont Animal Control said the rule’s needed to keep the city’s records up-to-date. “If our database is not updated with our current information, it becomes useless,” she said.

Mundy also said the city sends notices when licenses are due for renewal. But Oral contended she never received the notices because they all went to her old address.

That’s not a sufficient excuse said Fremont Police Sergeant Howard Russell. “Just the fact that you moved doesn’t prevent you from having the responsibility from making that notification,“ he said.

ConsumerWatch called dozens of Bay Area cities and counties to see about their pet licensing rules. Sonoma County was the only location besides Fremont to require notification of a change in a pet’s status. But Sonoma has no penalty for failing to notify.

Oral ultimately protested her fine and it was dismissed.

The two stars never got a chance to play together last season with McFadden being sidelined by a season-ending foot injury earlier in the same game that Palmer made his Raiders debut.

With McFadden finally recovered and at full speed during offseason practices, and Palmer entrenched as the team’s starting quarterback, the Raiders are hoping they have the building blocks for a dynamic offense.

“That’s the hardest thing for me right now is you want to watch him cause he’s so electrifying and he can do so many different things,” Palmer said Tuesday. “But I have a job on bootlegs and things like that and I have to make sure I get him the ball and then boot, but getting him on the field is just something the defense has to key on and really focus on and it’s been great to work with.”

Palmer never got that chance a year ago. He was acquired by the Raiders on Oct. 18, two days after starter Jason Campbell went down with a broken collarbone. Palmer got only a handful of snaps with the first team in practice that week and McFadden then injured his right foot catching a pass early in the first quarter Oct. 23 against Kansas City.

McFadden said he initially didn’t think the injury was that serious but that it started to feel much worse the day after. The Raiders originally described the injury as a sprained foot and designated him week-to-week. But it was actually a more serious Lisfranc injury that cost him the final nine games of the season and was a big reason why Oakland missed the playoffs.

“It was one of those things where you just hated it,” McFadden said. “Week after week you’re trying to get out there, and you can’t get out there because your foot won’t let you. One of those deals, you have to just keep going, keep pushing for it. Injuries like that take a lot of time to heal up so it’s not something you can just get back out there on too soon.”

McFadden said it took until early April until he could start running again and now he has no limitations. He has been running full speed and making cuts on the foot, showing signs of what he can bring to the Raiders offense this season if he can remain healthy.

That’s always been the biggest question for McFadden, who has missed 19 games in his first four seasons with foot, toe, shoulder, knee and hamstring injuries. Despite that history, McFadden disagrees with the notion that he is injury prone.

“Everybody has their own opinion, so, for me, I’m just going out there playing, going hard, if I get hurt, so be it,” he said. “I could see if it was just going down the street, falling over, getting hurt, that’s different, but I’m out there playing hard when I get hurt.”

McFadden was off to a fast start last season before the injury. He led the NFL with 610 yards rushing through six games and felt he had a shot at an 1,800-yard season. He also added 129 yards receiving and scored five total touchdowns as the Raiders opened the season 4-2.

McFadden topped 100 yards rushing eight times in a 15-game span between 2010 and 2011 as he finally showed signs of being the big-play back the Raiders thought they found when they drafted him fourth overall in 2008.

“Explosive home-run hitter on any given down, and those are guys that are tough to deal with because you might bottle them up for a while, but all it takes is one play and he hits a home run and ends up beating you,” coach Dennis Allen said. “So he’s an exciting player. He’s working hard out here every day to get better, to learn the system, to make sure he knows what to do and how to do it, and make sure he can execute under pressure.”

Bay Area blogger and paleo diet enthusiast Tara Grant said she lost more than 100 pounds in 2011 following the diet – today, she’s even slimmer. “I’ve lost about 15 more pounds, I don’t even weigh myself anymore,” said Grant. “And I’ve never felt better.”

Grant is part of a growing trend of “Caveman Converts” who swap processed foods, dairy and sugar for meat, fish, poultry, nuts and seeds, and fruits and vegetables galore.

It’s an elimination diet that has also worked for Tennessee neurosurgeon Dr. Jack Kruse. Seven years ago, Kruse tipped the scales at 357 pounds. He changed what he ate and saw dramatic results. “Within three months I lost 77 pounds,” said Kruse,”and within 11 months I had lost 133 pounds.”

Mark Sisson, author of “The Primal Blueprint,” was a top endurance athlete in the late 70′s and early 80′s. A marathoner and triathlete, Sisson was training really hard, putting in a lot of miles and following the conventional wisdom of the time — carbohydrate loading — taking in about 1,000 grams of carbs a day, mostly complex carbohydrates, mostly based on a grain-based diet.

Sisson said the combination of the diet and the training was actually killing him.

“I was one of the fittest people on the planet, I was the picture of health and inside I was falling apart,” said Sisson. “I had irritable bowel syndrome, I had chronic respiratory tract infections six or eight times a year, I had osteoarthritis in my feet, I had chronic tendonitis in my hips, I was a wreck.”

Sisson quit competing and began researching the types of food he was eating and how his body responded to them. “I saw that much of what I was eating was pro-inflammatory, was causing systemic inflammation throughout my body.”

So Sisson changed what he ate. “Six to 11 servings a day is the base of the food pyramid, I cut those out entirely,” said Sisson, “(and) replaced it then with fruits, veggies, and meat.” He said it’s not even lean meats. “If I have a 2-pound ribeye steak and I can’t finish it, I cut out the lean parts and give it to my dog, and I finish the fat,” joked Sisson.

“Grains are probably the worst thing in the human diet,” said Sisson. “We have just not evolved to withstand these little mini-toxins, these anti-nutrients that are in grains.”

Dr. Lane Sebring, a specialist in integrative medicine, argues grains over-stimulate the immune system and can actually block the absorption of better food that we should be eating.

“If you remove the insults that leak through the intestinal wall and cause chronic inflammation, the immune system starts to calm down, the liver is able to take care of metabolic waste products that our own body is producing and not the stuff that is leaking through the gut wall, and you start cleaning things up,” said Sebring.

Sebring said the human body is wonderful at repairing itself – feed it well and it will do just that.

He believes it is also important to give up seed oils, another inflammatory food.

“Soybean oil, corn oil, safflower, sunflower, canola those are sources of omega-six fat,” said Sebring, “(which) can get way out of balance and cause systemic inflammation throughout the body.”  These oils are ubiquitous, especially in processed foods.

Added sugars are another thing paleo dieters do without. Added sugars boost insulin levels, make you feel tired and hungry. Sisson said give up those three things, “grains, the industrial seed oils, the sugars, and you are 95% of your way to being healthier just by making those small changes in your diet.”

Nora Gedgaudas, author of  Primal Body, Primal Mind used a fire metaphor to explain the impact of sugars.

“When we eat a diet that’s carbohydrate-based, that’s based on sugar and starch, it’s like relying on kindling to fuel your metabolic fire,” said Gedgaudas. She means you need to be constantly preoccupied with keeping that fire burning, you’re constantly having to eat more and more carbohydrates. If, instead, you rely on fat as your primary source of fuel, it’s liberating.

“Once you put a nice big fat log on that metabolic fire, you are free to go off and live your life,” said Gedgaudas. “If the fire starts to burn down, put another log on the fire, but it is not a constant preoccupation.”

Fat, she explained, is a very even burning fuel. “It doesn’t go up and down, it doesn’t take you on a roller coaster ride and it doesn’t stimulate the release of insulin,” said Gedgaudas.

U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers allowed 23-year-old Otis Mobley to be freed Monday, although she delayed an order to allow prosecutors to appeal her decision.

Under the bond order, Mobley would be required to spend an hour reading and a half hour writing each day as he awaits trial on robbery and assault charges. Rogers will reportedly provide a reading list.

Mobley and two others are accused of arranging to sell a grenade launcher for $1,000 to an undercover federal agent in Richmond on March 28th.

One of Mobley’s accomplices opened fire on the agent, who fired back, critically injuring the gunman.

The lawsuit, sponsored by nonprofit education reform group Students Matter, was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday against the state and Gov. Jerry Brown, as well as state education officials and two school districts: Los Angeles Unified and Alum Rock Union in San Jose.

The suit was filed on behalf of a 10-year-old student in the Alum Rock district and six Los Angeles Unified students.

The suit claims that school administrators are handcuffed by present laws, which makes it virtually impossible to get rid of ineffective teachers. The questioned statutes encompass procedures for seniority-based layoffs, teacher dismissal, and teacher tenure.

“The outdated laws in California prevent the recruitment, support and retention of the most effective teachers,” said plaintiff attorney Theane Kapur. “They force administrators to leave grossly ineffective teachers in the classrooms.”

Kapur said school districts in low income areas often have a disproportionate share of ineffective teachers.

“In fact, in some school districts, students of color are 2-3 times more likely to have teachers at the very bottom in terms of effectiveness than their peers,” she said.

The California Teachers Association said layoffs based on seniority were recently upheld by two administrative law judges.

Judge Garrett Wong ruled that Eliana Lopez does not have standing to try to keep police or the district attorney from giving a copy of the video to the city attorney and then the commission.

Mirkarimi was suspended by Mayor Ed Lee after pleading guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment for a domestic dispute with Lopez on New Year’s Eve.

The video, which was taken by a neighbor on January 1st, shows Lopez crying and pointing to a bruise on her arm.

Wong ordered the video to be shared with the commission and refused a request by Lopez’s lawyer, Paula Canny, to keep the video from being distributed publicly.

In court on Tuesday, an irate Canny said she would appeal the decision, but Wong told her to stop talking and came close to finding her in contempt.

Outside of court, Canny said it’s wrong to victimize Lopez again by releasing the tape.

“It is unbelievable. Needless to say, Judge Wong doesn’t like me. That’s obvious,” said Canny. “I’m not going to state an opinion about what I think about him.”

The ethics commission will decide how to use and show the video as it hears official misconduct charges against the suspended sheriff.

The world’s largest online social network on Tuesday increased the planned price range for its stock to $34 to $38 per share in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That’s up from its previous range of $28 to $35. At the upper limit of $38, the sale would raise about $12.8 billion.

The move, which values Facebook as high as $104 billion, comes amid growing investor excitement about the offering. Analysts are comparing the frenzy surrounding Facebook’s IPO to Google Inc.’s in 2004, though in sheer size the latter pales in comparison.

At the same time, half of Americans think the expected value for Facebook Inc. is too high, according to a new Associated Press-CNBC poll conducted before the company raised its expected stock price on Tuesday. Only a third of those surveyed said they think Facebook’s expected value is appropriate.

Wall Street doesn’t share that sentiment.

“Demand is obscenely high,” said Scott Sweet the owner of advisory firm IPOBoutique about the offering. That said, he notes Facebook still has to be careful not to increase the price too much, so the stock still does well when it begins trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, as expected, on Friday.

“This is a deal that literally must work, in that it is so high-profile,” he said. “It would really level the IPO market if Facebook flopped.”

As it stands, Facebook would be the fourth-largest U.S. IPO in history, edging out AT&T Wireless, whose 2000 IPO raised $10.6 billion according to Renaissance Capital, an IPO investment advisory firm.

The AP-CNBC survey, meanwhile, found that of average Americans who invest in the stock market, 58 percent think Facebook’s valuation is too high at around $100 billion. That’s larger than well-known companies such as Ford and Kraft but smaller than Google or Microsoft. About 3 in 10 investors called the expected value fair.

Price worries won’t necessarily stop would-be investors. Facebook raised the price range in response strong demand for its stock, and it’s possible that the stock could price even higher on Thursday.

The Menlo Park-based company is offering 337 million shares in its IPO. Of those, 157 million shares aren’t coming from the company, but from existing stockholders, including the company’s earliest investors and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Even after the offering, Zuckerberg will remain Facebook’s single largest shareholder. And he will control the company through 57 percent of its voting stock. Based on the high end of the price range, he’ll get about $1.15 billion from the stock he is selling.

The IPO is is expected to raise more than 10 times as much as the $1.67 billion raised in Google eight years ago. At a value of $38 per share, the high end of Facebook’s expected range, Facebook would generate $6.84 billion on its shares. Existing stockholders would collectively make $5.98 billion.

Even at the higher price range, it’s going to be tough for the company’s fans and everyday investors to get in on the IPO. Most of the shares are expected to go to people with connections to the company or those who have large, active accounts with the big banks or brokerage firms directly involved in the stock sale.

Morgan Stanley leads the team of 33 underwriters selected for the Facebook offering, followed by JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs. The company will trade under the ticker symbol “FB.”

Analysts say there’s so much interest in Facebook’s stock that some underwriters are closing their books as early as Tuesday. This means they won’t be taking any more orders from potential buyers.

In its Tuesday filing, Facebook also adjusted the timetable for finishing its $1 billion acquisition of Instagram, saying it expects the deal to close sometime in 2012. Previously, it had said it expected to complete the deal in the second quarter.

Some analysts have speculated that the acquisition of the photo-sharing network would come under regulatory scrutiny. If the deal doesn’t close by Dec. 10, Facebook could have to pay Instagram a breakup fee of $200 million.

In a busy classroom at Thurgood Marshall High School in San Francisco, students worked to create speakers for their iPods. San Francisco State University Professor Martin Linder led the unique design class.

“The more they can be passionate about what they’re doing, the deeper they’re going to get into it, the better results they’re going to get in terms of their education,” Linder explained.

Linder founded Industrial Design Outreach, or “iDo” in 2003. It inspires innovation and invention among low income and underserved teens. Teacher Tera Freedman’s class uses high tech tools Linder has purchased through donations and grants.

“They’re actually making something,” Freedman said enthusiastically. “They’re using their hands. They’ve using their minds in a creative way.”

Students like 17-year-old Quincy Collins says the class sparked his interest in a design career.

“I have the ability to create what I want to create instead of being told, ‘Paint the flower,’” Collins said with satisfaction.

About two dozen design students from San Francisco State get credits to mentor and teach the daily high school class at Thurgood Marshall. iDO assistant director Phillip La says the young artists are encouraged to make mistakes.

“The faster you make mistakes, the faster you learn, the more you learn,” La explained.

The iDo class is showing students “I can” — be curious, creative, and confident. In fact, in May, the De Young Museum will display their clock projects and California-themed community bench. Each student intricately laser-cut their own designs out of veneer.

“They’ve worked so hard and then, ‘Wow, it’s wonderful!’ They immediately want to share it with their family,” Linder said.

Phillip La says Linder inspires them to stretch their imagination.

“When he speaks, you automatically are engaged with him,” said La. “You believe in what he believes in.”

Judy Chu believes. She dropped plans to pursue accounting after Linder’s design class. Now a design student in college, she’ll return to Thurgood to mentor.

“The program let me think out of the box and do things beyond what I thought I could do,” she said.

“When you see them discover something new in themselves, that’s what I really delight in,” Linder added.

So for inspiring creativity and confidence through design, this week’s Jefferson Award in the Bay Area goes to Martin Linder.

Suspended slugger Manny Ramirez is scheduled to begin a 10-game minor league stint with Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M., and the club is already preparing special ticket packages for his home games in Northern California.

Barring rainouts, the dreadlocked designated hitter and outfielder is eligible to be activated by the Oakland Athletics from his 50-game suspension on May 30 — his 40th birthday—for the finale of a series at Minnesota.

The A’s announced his schedule Tuesday, and the River Cats have already been busy planning for his much-anticipated arrival in the state capital.

The limited edition “Manny Pack” ticket packages in Sacramento will include 20 or 40 ticket vouchers good for any game this season along with a Ramirez River Cats T-shirts, while supplies last, of course.

“Manny’s name is getting thrown around quite a bit,” said A’s outfielder Collin Cowgill, recently promoted from Sacramento. “It’ll be good for the fans in Sacramento to see a guy like him come through. Obviously, he’s going to fill the seats there, as he should. He deserves it. He’s one heck of a player.”

While the A’s could have sent Ramirez to Class-A Stockton this weekend and guaranteed themselves a big draw at the gates, general manager Billy Beane wanted to get Ramirez prepared against the best competition and pitching possible before his return.

The 12-time All-Star had to serve a 50-game suspension for a second positive drug test.

This will be the 20th major league season for Ramirez, a career .312 hitter with 1,831 RBIs.

The A’s signed Ramirez to a one-year minor league contract on Feb. 20 that is worth approximately $500,000 if he’s added to the big league roster.

Ramirez retired from the Tampa Bay Rays last season rather than serve a 100-game suspension for a second failed drug test. The penalty was cut to 50 games because he sat out nearly all of last season.

He ranks 14th on the career list with 555 home runs. Ramirez went 1 for 17 (.059) in five games last season for Tampa Bay.

This spring, Ramirez vowed to be ready to make a comeback with the A’s.

“It’s going to take time. I haven’t played in a whole year, so it’s like starting to walk again, getting into that feel,” he said.

Also Tuesday, the A’s claimed Australian lefty reliever Travis Blackley off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s transferred right-handed reliever Joey Devine to the 60-day disabled list as he recovers from his second Tommy John elbow reconstructive surgery in three years.

A move on the 25-man roster will be made when Blackley joins the A’s, who were set to play the second game of a two-game series against the Angels in Anaheim.

Next 10, a nonpartisan policy organization based in San Francisco, has released the 2012 version of their California Budget Challenge, an online tool that lets users understand the serious choices facing the state and determine where they stand on a series of spending and revenue policy options. Users can create a budget that reflects their values and share it with their elected representatives and others.

“Californians are talking about the issues presented in the latest budget proposal by Governor Brown, but few understand the specifics that will have a very real impact on their lives,” said F. Noel Perry, the founder of Next 10, in a statement. “The California Budget Challenge provides people outside of the formal policy making process with a way to learn about and work through the major choices being discussed in Sacramento.”

The online budget simulation guides users through a series of decisions over how much to spend on education, prisons, healthcare and more, then they choose whether to raise or lower taxes. With each choice, a graph displays how those decisions affect the budget deficit as well as arguments for and against each choice.

The California Budget Challenge utilizes figures from both the independent Legislative Analyst’s Office and Brown’s budget proposals.

“The California Budget Challenge gives citizens a unique opportunity to see how all of the major pieces fit together and the trade-offs inherent in putting together a balanced budget for our state,” Michael Genest, who served as a state finance director under former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, told PR Newswire.

Since its debut in 2005, Next 10 indicated that more than 250,000 people have utilized the California Budget Challenge online tool.

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said he is looking for a developer to build at least two 12-story residential towers downtown.

“During this window when the economy is moving up, we want people to make pretty big investments, like $100 million,” said Reed. “So in order to give them a little boost, we’re going to cut some taxes, cut some fees and cut some red tape to make it easier for them to make that decision and invest in San Jose.”

Reed said he doesn’t think filling the buildings would be a problem.

“We have no doubt that there will be more people moving downtown. The buildings that we have have leased up,” he said. “Now it’s time for some new construction to allow a few hundred more people per building to move in and help support downtown, which will generate some jobs and revenue for the city in the process.”

The San Jose City Council is expected to discuss the incentives for builders at its meeting on Tuesday.

To qualify for the proposed incentives, projects would have to break ground by the end of 2013.

Governor Brown is banking on tax receipts of $1.5 billion from Mark Zuckerberg and other Facebook insiders exercising options and selling shares and as much as $1.9 billion if voters approve the higher tax rates proposed by the governor.

KCBS’ Doug Sovern Reports:

Now, legislative analyst Mac Taylor said that figure could be $2.1 billion or even more because Facebook is raising its IPO price.

“This is a very difficult thing to predict. We came up with estimates in February, giving it our best shot,” said Taylor. “The administration could not have included that in January. They have now included some numbers in their forecast for Facebook. We’re a little bit higher than they are.”

Taylor is assuming the stock starts trading at $38 a share and goes up to $45 within six months.

The stock could go much higher than that or lower, so he said that it is tough to know exactly how much money will come in to help balance California’s budget.

But Taylor projects that 20 percent of the state’s personal income growth in 2012 will be related to Facebook and its IPO making many people much richer.
