“Occupy Oakland Turns Violent” is a strange headline. It implies that the Occupy Oakland protestors suddenly decided to start acting violently. But the videos of what happened over the last 48 hours show that that is not what happened. Clearly, it was the Oakland Police who decided to become violent against the protestors. Without provocation, the Oakland Police suddenly started shooting tear gas canisters, rubber bullets, flash grenades, etc., at the protestors and beating them up, ostensibly to clear the plaza, though many of the cops’ violent actions didn’t seem to be really for any clear purpose other than to bully and punish unarmed and unprotected men, women, and children who were exercising their 1st amendment rights. Clearly, anyone who was present when the “violence” started, and the mainstream media were definitely there to see everything, would agree that it was the cops who “turned violent”, not the protesters.

Why write a headline that gives a blatantly false account of what happened? Wouldn’t a more accurate headline be something like, “Oakland police turn violent against protestors”?
