Jorge De La Rosa tuned up for his opening-day start with six shutout innings for the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, but Hector Sanchez hit a game-ending two-run homer to give the San Francisco Giants an 8-6 win.
Manager Bruce Bochy made the announcement Tuesday at spring training that Bumgarner would pitch March 31 at Arizona. This marks Bumgarner’s first opening day start. He was the only member of the San Francisco rotation with a winning record last season at 13-9 with a 2.77 ERA in 31 starts and 201 1-3 innings. He made his first NL All-Star team.
Major League Baseball plans to eliminate home plate collisions, such as the one that severely injured San Francisco Giants star catcher Buster Posey, possibly as soon as next season but no later than by 2015.
Colorado may get to avoid Buster Posey, who has reached base in 49 straight games overall against Colorado. SF Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he would “probably” give Posey the game off Tuesday evening.
“We’re going to have to change this up,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “We’re not getting any production from our lead-off hitters. We’re definitely going through a tough time and we’re going to change things up here a little bit.”
Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run double to help Bruce Bochy earn his 1,500th win as a manager, and the San Francisco Giants split a straight doubleheader with the Cincinnati Reds with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap Tuesday.
The defending World Series champions must get back to work in a hurry if they want to hang around in an NL West that is still wide open.
The AL’s 3-0 victory at Citi Field on Tuesday night was an arms showcase. It was just the third shutout for the AL, following 1946 at Boston’s Fenway Park and 1990 at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.
“These guys are coming up now with incredible talent, these young players,” National League manager Bruce Bochy said. “I think they are just getting better, faster, bigger, stronger still, and it’s impressive to watch.”
