Colony Collapse Disorder
Central Valley beekeepers are losing tens of thousands of dollars to thieves making off with beehives.
Honeybees have been dying at an alarming rate for years, but a new government survey shows nearly a third of the nation’s honeybees died over the winter. Some beekeepers said the problem may have to do with what is being sprayed on the food we eat.
Researchers at San Francisco State University said they have found another explanation for the honey bee die-off: A parasitic fly that hijacks their bodies and causes them to abandon hives.
