Powell has been Oakland’s backup catcher behind Kurt Suzuki each of the past three seasons, but played in only 36 games in 2011 with a .171 batting average, one home run and four RBIs.

Landon Powell hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, his first homer of the season, and the Oakland Athletics held on to beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep at home of the defending World Series champs.
