Raising beef for the American dinner table does far more damage to the environment than producing pork, poultry, eggs or dairy, according to a new study.
A virus never before seen in the U.S. has killed millions of baby pigs in less than a year, and with little known about how it spreads or how to stop it, it’s threatening pork production and pushing up prices by 10 percent or more.
In a recent study, the Environment Working Group discovered that store-bought meat contained antibiotic-resistant bacteria, also known as superbugs, which can cause consumers to become ill.
Safeway spokesman Brian Dowling said the chain already buys some pork from producers who are phasing out gestation crates. The Pleasanton-based company has not set a deadline for going completely crate-free.
