Created in response to founder Sally Waters own allergies and sensitive skin issues, Birdy Botanicals looks to nature for the ingredients our skin craves. While working in research and development as a model maker for film props seen in "Planet of the Apes" and "James and the Giant Peach," Sally was exposed to harsh chemicals, and subsequently to irritation. "Sweet Dreams, Big Scents, Big Dreams, Small Pillows" is the tagline for this nine-year-old nonprofit project which trains Bay Area-based at-risk young women of color in all aspects of small business entrepreneurship around vocational sewing skills. The cooperative's name comes from 5.5-inch square dream pillows made from 100 percent cotton and satin filled with herbal blends: lavender, chamomile and mugwort or lavender, chamomile and hops.
