Traditionally hailing from the United Kingdom, shepherd's pie has a long history of providing hearty sustenance to hungry diners. Whereas true shepherd's pie once only contained lamb and often had a pastry crust, modern day versions oftentimes contain beef and come topped with fluffy whipped potatoes. The meat, mixed in with a variety of savory vegetables and starchy potatoes, provides the perfect vehicle to dine on a complete meal in one neat package. Here are five San Francisco spots serving up satisfying shepherd's pie.

The Pig And Whistle

The pub's shepherd's pie is not to be missed and comes piping hot with a savory mix of vegetables and beef topped by a generous layer of whipped potatoes. Round out the meal with a pint of Boddingtons.

Popular with locals for drinks and game watching, the Phoenix also serves up traditional pub standards such as fish and chips and hot wings. Diners who select the shepherd's pie will delight in a house specialty full of braised beef bathed in Guinness gravy. Try it with a side of Irish soda bread or a green salad to lighten things up.

Open five days a week, Lovejoy's is an English tea room with a quirky, family-friendly atmosphere. Customers may partake of anything from a light pot of tea with scones to high tea with all the trimmings. While typically known for dainty sandwiches and bottomless pots of hot tea, tea rooms might seem an unlikely spot to find heartier fare like shepherd's pie. Lovejoy's, however, in addition to a menu full of traditional teas and treats, also includes a selection of pub style foods like a ploughman's lunch and shepherd's pie. The shepherd's pie is served in individual crocks, is topped with whipped potatoes and is paired with a side of crisp spring greens.
