Are you looking for something to replace your tired Ikea table or sofa, an item that looks a bit less like college dorm furniture and more like the urban professional that you are? San Francisco has some furniture offerings that are by no means plebian; Here’s a sample from vintage to modern.

LIMN Gallery

290 Townsend Street
San Francisco, CA 94107
(415) 977-1300
LIMN Gallery

LIMN is a more expensive Design Within Reach with a distinct Bay Area flavor. Originally a source of drafting and studio furniture for architects and artists in the San Francisco Bay Area, today it’s the place to go for high-end sofas and other furniture that will last years and years, high-end kitchens and lighting and home accessories with a design-conscious flair. LIMN is also a 4,000 square foot art gallery that exhibits art from China, Japan and the United States.

Peace Industry

535 Octavia Blvd.
San Francisco, CA 94102
(415) 255-9940

This charming store and website offer unique felt rugs from Iran. The owners traveled to Iran in 2002 to seek out these specific felt rugs, and ended up hiring a few mountain villagers to reproduce their ancient craft. Today, they pay Iranians fair wages to create hundreds if not thousands of rugs a year. These rugs will last a lifetime, and come in fun, eclectic yet neutral colors and designs that go well with any décor.

Monument

573 Valencia Street
(between 16th St & 17th St)
(415) 861-9800
Monument

This store offers one of the better selections of mid-century modern furniture in the city. Standout pieces from Eames-era designers such as Milo Baughman, Paul McCobb, Hans Wegner, Knoll and George Nelson crowd the store. If you like the prices on eBay but not the hassle, and want to actually view the item in person, Monument is your place. While some may not understand the prices mid-century modern demands, they are actually quite competitive.

Modernpast

677 Chenery Street
San Francisco, CA 94131
(415) 333-9007
Modernpast

Modernpast is a charming store featuring scandinavean and mid-century modern furniture as well as pottery, glass and art in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Glen Park.
