Community Saves Santa Cruz Lifeguards

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KCBS) - Lifeguards will continue patrolling Santa Cruz state beaches this summer. The program was saved from the state budget ax by community support.

A successful fundraiser was held in Santa Cruz Monday night for the seasonal lifeguards at local state beaches.

The Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks organization set out to raise $60,000 by Wednesday to help fund 45 lifeguards to protect and patrol state beaches, including Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz and Palm Beach in Watsonville.

The State Parks Seasonal Lifeguard program was discontinued last year as a result of state budget cuts, according to the organization.

Event organizers argue that lifeguards are essential because they are first responders in medical emergencies, teach youth about water safety, and perform rescues in the ocean as well as rivers, streams and lakes throughout Santa Cruz County.

Last year, state lifeguards rescued 151 people, provided 436 people with medical attention, educated 5,266 people, and made 95,632 safety contacts that saved lives and prevented injuries, according to the organization.

The "Save Our Lifeguards" beach bash featured food and performances by Hula Halau O Mahina I Ke Kai and the Beach Bums.

Monday night's fundraiser was held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Twin Lakes State Beach. The cost of admission was either a $100 donation or the purchase or sale of raffle tickets worth $100.

According to organizers, they raised close to the $60,000 needed Monday night.
