Michael Moore Being Honored With Steinbeck Award At SJSU

SAN JOSE (BCN) - Filmmaker Michael Moore was set to receive the John Steinbeck Award from the son of the renowned author in San Jose Thursday.

The award is given to writers and artists whose work embodies the spirit of Steinbeck's values and belief in the dignity of the powerless and exploited.

Past recipients include Arthur Miller, Bruce Springsteen, Garrison Keillor, Joan Baez and Sean Penn.

Moore, a controversial filmmaker whose works include "Bowling for Columbine" and "Capitalism: A Love Story," was set to be honored with the "In the Souls of the People" award by noted author Thomas Steinbeck.

Steinbeck has said his father was the "Michael Moore of his time."
