Oakland School Cop Fatally Shoots Man Outside Dance

OAKLAND (KCBS) – An Oakland Unified School District police officer shot and killed a man outside of a high school dance Saturday night after he was stabbed with a screwdriver.

District Superintendent Tony Smith said officers posted outside Skyline High School's winter ball event near the Joaquin Miller Community Center in Joaquin Miller Park spotted a suspicious vehicle with two people inside.

"Officers approached the vehicle and one of our officers was attacked and stabbed," said Smith. "Unfortunately there was a shooting to protect the officer."

KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith said the 17-officer school district police force has its hands full regularly trying to keep students safe.

"Assaults and shootings and other threats that have been made against Oakland Unified students," he said. "Unfortunately since July, twelve of our students have been killed."

The car was reported stolen and officers said they found a gun inside. A woman who was in the car with the victim was not injured, but was transported to a hospital for observation.
