Santa Clara To Approve Next Steps In 49ers Stadium Project

SANTA CLARA (KCBS) - Santa Clara's City Council could move forward on the proposal for a new 49ers stadium Tuesday night.

The Council is expected to approve a number of items relating to the proposed $937 million facility including the establishment of a stadium authority.

Acting Assistant Santa Clara City Manager Carol McCarthy highlighted the benefits of establishing the authority.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

"It would be able to sell stadium builder licenses [and] sell the naming rights to the stadium. The stadium authority would lease the stadium for its use and otherwise manage the facility because the facility will be a city owned facility," said McCarthy.

McCarthy added that with Governor Brown threatening to do away with redevelopment agencies that they also want to make sure they don't lose the $40 million in RDA funds to build the stadium.

"We're trying to illustrate for the state how far along in this process we are and that we have the full council support and our voting public's support to move this project forward," said McCarthy.

Establishing the stadium authority will allow them to move forward with selling the naming rights.
