San Jose Motorcycle Officer Injured In Hit-&-Run Crash
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A San Jose police motorcycle officer was injured in a hit-and-run accident at a busy intersection Monday afternoon, a police spokesman said.
The collision occurred shortly before 1:40 p.m. at the intersection of South First Street and Alma Avenue, Sgt. Jason Dwyer said.
The motorcycle officer had been conducting "selective enforcement" in the area when he witnessed a motorist violating a traffic law, Dwyer said.
He pulled out and began driving south on South First Street to catch up to the car, but as he approached Alma Avenue, a light blue Honda Accord pulled out in front of him and the motorcycle officer crashed into it and was ejected from his bike, Dwyer said.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the Honda was traveling east on Alma and the driver made a right turn onto southbound South First Street, into the officer's path, Dwyer said.
The driver of the Honda drove away afterward and is still at large, according to Dwyer.
Meanwhile, a police sergeant happened to pass by the intersection and found the first officer lying in the roadway.
The officer, identified as 29-year-old Devlin Creighton, was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment of a possible head injury and pain to his arm and chest area, Dwyer said.
Dwyer did not know Creighton's condition.
Police are looking for the Honda, believed to be a 2004 or 2006 model, he said.
The first car that the officer had been planning to pull over also did not stop, but Dwyer said it is possible that driver wasn't aware of the officer's presence.
