VALLEJO (CBS/AP) – A special education teacher at a Vallejo elementary school has been arrested on suspicion of raping a developmentally disabled student on campus.

Vallejo police say 56-year-old Jerry Johnson was taken into custody at his home in Elk Grove around 5:30 p.m. Monday on suspicion of raping a person who is incapable of consenting.

Johnson, a teacher at Loma Vista Elementary School, allegedly raped the 18-year-old woman on campus at the end of February.

Lt. Eric Mortenson told the Times-Herald of Vallejo that the attack was reported earlier this month. He said the woman, who had apparently assisted Johnson with other developmentally disabled students, has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old.

Why in the hell does CBS continually name “suspects” in rape charges with the certainty that in doing so will ruin a life regardless of presumed innocence?????

Are you sticking up for this man? Our children do not lie about something like this!!!

Sandy, Children lie… it happens probably more then you know. If this man is guilty, I doubt anyone on the board would stick up for him, it is a disgusting and extremely damaging crime and I don’t believe Tom is sticking up for him either, he is just pointing out the fact that CBS has released his name without knowing if he’s guilty or not. There are numerous cases when a teenager has lied about being raped by someone, and even when the alleged rapist is proven innocent, his/her name has already been smeared and he/she is rarely ever accepted back into the community. But I do understand where you are coming from.

Yeah, they do. They make stuff up all the time. I know having been named in a bogus civil suit which alleges I didn’t report to authorities a “rape” having occurred between two students who were friends at a middle school. The student was and is a complete liar–he has no evidence it happened and it was never prosecuted. But hey, it was okay for the paper to name me and another person and be vilified by the public.

Tom- the media and the police RARELY name someone just because they think the suspect is a “person of interest.” I’m pretty sure the cops were watching this guy or have some pretty condemning stuff, before acting. If he is guilty, I put him in the same category as the Garridos.

This is the most disturbing situation i have came across .. Having a disabled child in school i worry about people taking advantage of him…. This man needs some serious help, and needs to be jailed for a very long tiime… it sickens me when you trust the people that you leave your child with that is suppose to be trusting and loyal and protective to your child.. i just cannot find the words for him…

Jonathan normally I would agree with ylu that children lie, usuall at that age not so much about thing like that. Maybe teenagers or the rare case, most kids at the age capacity, do not ie about things like that. That being said, he will have his day in court. The reason they printed his name, he is an adult & it’s a public record. That being said if he is guilty of the crime they should give the death penalty, they won’t so just put hinm on a level 3 or 4 mainline & they will save taxpayers some money within a year of him landing there!!
