Family Escapes Oakland House Fire
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A family of three was forced out of their home after a two-alarm fire brought more than a dozen firefighters to a converted garage in Oakland early Thursday morning, an Oakland fire captain said.
Fire crews received a call around 3:05 a.m. reporting smoke coming from a garage at 7421 Altura Place.
When crews arrived at 3:11 a.m., the garage—which had been converted into a room—was on fire, Oakland fire Capt. Vicky Evans-Robinson said.
A relative of the family had been living in the in-law unit and was briefly unaccounted for. He arrived at the scene to see his living space had been destroyed by the fire.
Fourteen firefighters controlled the fire in about 30 minutes, Evans-Robinson said.
The residents were not hurt, and no firefighters were injured.
The garage sustained substantial damage, and a nearby home had minor damage to its roof, she said.
The cause of the fire was unknown, the captain said.
