San Francisco Police ID Officers Involved In Bayview Fatal Chase

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS / AP ) -- San Francisco police have released the names of two officers who were involved in a foot pursuit last month of a parolee who died when they say he accidentally shot himself to death.

In a letter to the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the department identified the officers as Matthew Lopez and Richard Hastings.

A police spokesman says releasing the names of the officers is not a change in the department's policy, but was done because the investigation of the incident is nearly complete.

Police say as 19-year-old Kenneth Harding ran from the officers on July 16 in the city's Bayview district, he fired at them, accidentally shooting himself in the neck. The officers also fired at Harding, hitting him in the leg.
