Daily Madden: Will Palmer Start For Raiders?

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Will Carson Palmer start at quarterback for the Oakland Raiders against the Chiefs Sunday, a week after he was traded to the team after not playing this season?

"He's a real pro, and he's a very smart guy, he knows how to play the position of quarterback," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew Friday. "And that wouldn't be my concern as much as the physical -- not having been in training camp, not doing the running, the hitting... That would be more of a concern than the mental."

Madden said he thinks coach Hue Jackson is still evaluating the situation. "Is he physically okay, can he do this and be better than (backup) Kyle Boller? He doesn't have to be Tom Brady... all he has (to do) is give the Raiders a better chance to win with him than they'd have with Kyle Boller."

The 49ers have a bye this week, and the team had limited workouts to rest the players. "They had pretty good momentum going in and you don't want to lose anything," Madden said. "You just kind of do enough that you rest your body but at the same time keep your tone." (7:45)
