Tech Report: Apple Confirms Software Behind iPhone, iPad Battery Issue

CUPERTINO (KCBS/AP) – Apple said that a problem with its latest mobile operating system is shortening the battery life of iPhones, iPads and iPods that use the software.

Company officials said the problem is with the iOS 5 operating system, which is part of the latest line of iPhones, the 4S.

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid said that Apple has found bugs in the software and is looking to resolve them quickly.

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid:

"Apple says that they will release a software patch or update in a few weeks," he said. "So in the meantime, you're going to have to wait."

Magid said that there are a number of things users can do to preserve battery life for their phones, no matter if it's an iPhone or not.

"You can turn off a feature that automatically sets the time zone based on your location. Getting rid of push notifications, where notices just come to you. Turning down the screen brightness on any phone," said Magid. "And they say that locking your phone can help."

Apple support forums have been filled with complaints regarding this issue.

You can hear Larry Magid's Tech Report Monday through Friday at 3:50pm on KCBS All News 740AM and 106.9FM.
