Sting Nets Dozens Of Drug, Weapons Arrests Near San Francisco Schools

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - San Francisco police arrested more than 40 people on various drug and weapons charges in a sting targeting illegal activity near schools over the past several months, police announced Tuesday.

The undercover operation, which started in August and ended in mid-November, focused on schools in the city's Tenderloin and Mission neighborhoods, where city officials posted "Drug Free Zone" signs within 1,000 feet of the schools.

Anyone arrested within the 1,000-foot distance from a school faced an enhancement on their charges that would result in a longer sentence if convicted, police said.

Over the course of the crackdown, police arrested 42 people on a variety of drug charges, including sales of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines, and possession of weapons such as knives and guns.

The purpose of the operation was to ensure the safety of students in and around schools, police said.
