San Francisco Neighborhood Hit With Rash Of Burglaries

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – A recent rash of home burglaries over the past month have left residents in San Francisco's Parkmerced neighborhood on edge.

Police CompStat figures show several crimes taking place in the area just south of the San Francisco State campus over the past several days and weeks.

A stretch of Garces Drive near Grijalva Drive has been hit six times since mid-February and all the homes were victimized by thieves who broke windows facing the community backyard area.

"Our cabinet is moved over and our blinds are all messed up," said a resident who was burglarized last week. "The windows were open and we went upstairs and our laptops were gone."

KCBS' Mark Seelig Reports:

He and his roommate also found a baseball bat that was left behind by the suspects.

The area is certainly not immune to crime but residents said what's unnerving now is that the frequency has increased in recent weeks.

"The best we can do is try and pull together as a community," said PJ Johnston, spokesman for Parkmerced. "We keep people informed through a variety of methods."

But many residents said they don't feel like Parkmerced management is taking the issue seriously enough.

The real fear among many of them is that the thieves are eventually going to enter an occupied home and hurt someone in an attempt to get away.

Johnston said they are working closely with officers at the Taravel Police Station in an effort to put a stop to the crimes being committed.
