SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Transbay buses across the Golden Gate Bridge will follow modified routes, and ferries between Marin and San Francisco will run more frequently, during the upcoming weekend closure of Doyle Drive.

Golden Gate Transit routes 70 and 80 will run shuttles between the bridge and downtown San Francisco that detour around the Doyle Drive construction via 19th Avenue and Geary Boulevard.

The 101 route will run as far south as San Rafael before diverting across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to use Interstate 80 and the Bay Bridge to enter San Francisco.

KCBS’ Bob Butler Reports:

The new routing begins at 8 p.m. Friday when crews start demolishing Doyle Drive, said Mary Currie, spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge and Transportation District.

“If you can stay away, stay away. And if you need to get into San Francisco, I’d suggest the ferry first. And then we will have the bus system in a different segmented routing,” she said.

Because of San Francisco Giants games on Saturday and Sunday, Currie said extra ferries would accommodate baseball fans.

“Golden Gate ferries at Larkspur and Sausalito, we’ll be more than doubling that service. So this weekend, if you haven’t ridden a ferry in a while, I highly suggest the ferries,” she said.

Currie recommended advanced booking to catch the Saturday game, since the Giants Ferry for Sunday has already sold out.

There have already been nightly lane closures for more than a week to prepare for the weekend demolition work.

Caltrans worried freeway signs advising motorists of the closures would not dissuade enough people from driving over the Golden Gate Bridge because Doyle Drive is not a well-known name.
