Show Dog Stolen From Scotts Valley Home

SCOTTS VALLEY (CBS SF) -- A show dog worth $27,000 was reported stolen from a Scotts Valley home Tuesday, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

The dog's owner lives in a trailer just off of state Highway 17 near the Santa Cruz Moose Lodge and reported that his sizable Great Dane had disappeared from a well-barricaded enclosure between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to sheriff's Sgt. Steve Carney.

The dog's owner, who ordered the pedigreed canine "Knight" from Australia, said that it was unlikely that the dog had been able to get out of its enclosure on its own or that it would have gone easily with someone who it did not know.

The owner said the dog was "like a child to him" and seemed shaken up about the dog's disappearance, Carney said.

Since the dog weighs 175 pounds and stands about 3 feet tall, Carney speculated that a dog like Knight would be hard to miss.

The Great Dane was described as mostly black, with white fur on his front legs, chest, rear paws, and part of his face. The animal is registered with the American Kennel Club and microchipped, but was not wearing a collar.

Carney could not offer further information about what, if any competitions the dog had won.

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information about Knight to call the Sheriff's Office at (831) 471-1121 or the Sheriff's Office Tip Line at (831) 454-2847.
