Study Says Cyber Crime Increases, Attacks More Malicious
SAN JOSE (KCBS) — Cybercrime is up six percent from last year according to a new study conducted by the Ponemon Institute. The results released on Monday show cyber attacks have more than doubled over the last three years increasing the financial impact by 40 percent.
Larry Ponemon with the Ponemon Institute said the crimes are becoming more frequent and more malicious. He said the most costly of the attacks appear to be from "malicious insiders."
"I call it the one-two punch where there's a bad guy inside the organization pretending to be a good guy. It can be a very difficult to detect because they use a combination of low or high-tech methods to get at the information or to actually do damage to an organization," said Ponemon.

Varun Kohli, director of marketing for Hewlett-Packard Security Products said many companies still aren't' taking the threats seriously.
"You'd be surprised to know that some of the biggest companies out there who have pretty valuable information to hackers. They have not done a good job of securing their enterprise. They are actually putting information on the internet that they should not be putting on the internet in the first place."
The study concluded that more than 100 successful cyber attacks occur each week.
