Sailboat Struck, Sunk By Tugboat Near Golden Gate Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A tugboat struck and sank a sailboat Saturday just outside the Golden Gate Bridge, throwing two people into the chilly water, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The tug and a barge it was towing struck the sailboat, which was estimated to be around 20-30 feet long, around 3 p.m., Coast Guard Ensign Corinne Gaines said.

The Coast Guard rescued one person from the water and the San Francisco Fire Department a second.

Both people were checked out by paramedics on shore, but neither needed to go to a hospital, Gaines said.

The sailboat sank.

The barge and tug were ordered back to port to meet with a U.S. Coast Guard officer who will investigate the collision, Gaines said.
