Woman, Dog Recued From Cliff Near Fort Funston

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - A woman and her dog were rescued from a cliff near Fort Funston in San Francisco Wednesday afternoon, National Park Service and San Francisco fire officials said.

Firefighters responded at about 3:50 p.m. to a report of a woman and dog that went over a cliff, fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

The dog had fallen over the cliff while off-leash and under voice control. The woman climbed down the cliff face to try and help the dog up, but fell about 50 feet to the beach below, park service spokeswoman Alexandra Picavet said.

San Francisco Fire and Rescue staff reached her and she was airlifted by California Highway Patrol helicopter to a hospital, Picavet said.

The dog was helped out with a special harness and was unharmed.

Park service officials said this was the second time in a week a person went over the cliff to try and retrieve a dog.
