Suspect In San Ardo Home Invasion Behind Bars

SAN ARDO (CBS SF) -- A man was arrested in the Monterey County community of San Ardo after allegedly breaking into an elderly man's home and threatening to kill him, county sheriff's officials said.

The elderly resident reported that a man entered his home on Center Street around 3 p.m. Friday and threatened him, saying he would return that evening to kill the man and burn his house down, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

The man's girlfriend convinced him to report the threat to the sheriff's office, and deputies searched the town of San Ardo for the suspect.

Later Friday night, deputies were able to locate the suspect after getting a tip that he was sleeping inside a car near San Ardo Elementary School.

The man, identified as 34-year-old Jerry Zavala of San Ardo, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, criminal threats and brandishing a knife.

He was booked into Monterey County Jail.
