5 Injured After BMW Crashes Into San Jose Home

SAN JOSE (CBS / AP / BCN) -- Police and witnesses said two speeding BMWs lost control and one of them smashed deep into a San Jose kitchen, leaving a 40-year-old mother critically injured and her small daughter buried in rubble.

The San Jose Fire Department was dispatched at 3:56 p.m. to a house in the 5400 block of Leigh Avenue at Gregg Drive across from Leigh High School, fire department spokesman Capt. Cleo Doss said.

At the scene, they found a vehicle with three passengers "all the way in the structure," Doss said.

Neighbors Stephanie Collins and Lou Soliz tell the San Jose Mercury News that they found the mother Wednesday pinned under wreckage and screaming for her daughter. The neighbors said they pulled the daughter from underneath the rubble of the roof. Her only injury was one cut.

Three people from the BMW in the kitchen had moderate injuries. The second car involved in the accident landed on the sidewalk and injured one person who declined treatment, Doss said.

Witnesses told KPIX 5 the drivers were speeding southbound on Leigh Avenue before the crash.

Several students and parents said the driver that ended up on the sidewalk is a student at Leigh High School. His cousin drove the other car and is a senior at Leland High School, according to witnesses.

San Jose Police have not confirmed if the drivers were drag racing. Residents who lived near the campus told KPIX 5 that students often peel out of the parking lot after school.
