Cal Wins Collegiate Rugby Championship

CHESTER, Pennsylvania (CBS/AP) -- Danny Barrett led Cal to the Collegiate Rugby Championship title, scoring twice in the first half in a 19-14 victory over Life University on Sunday.

In a rematch of last year's bronze-medal game won by Cal, Life appeared tired after beating Navy 43-7 in a semifinal that ended an hour before the championship game.

Cal beat eighth-seeded Arizona 26-12 in the quarterfinals, and edged UCLA 33-21 in the semifinals.

Life opened with a 31-17 victory over Kutztown in the quarterfinals.

Two minutes into the title game, Cal's Danny Barrett scored on a run in from the left side after some nice ball movement. Barrett scored again at the halftime buzzer, and Russell Webb's conversion made it 14-0.

Early minutes into the second half, Cal's Seamus Kelly got past Jake McFadden with a nice ball fake and sprint to the goal. Colton Carriaga scored for the Running Eagles with 2:45 to go after a long run by Paris Hollis. Two minutes later, Carriaga mustered a long run up the right side before dumping it to the tournament's leading scorer, Joe Cowley for the try. Cowley made the conversion but, Cal held on from there for the win.
