Alameda County Fair Opens, Offers Discounts

PLEASANTON (CBS SF) - The Alameda County Fair's theme of "summer fun starts here" kicked into gear Wednesday in Pleasanton, and the fair is offering special $1 admission and $1 rides throughout the day.

The fair, held at the fairgrounds at 4501 Pleasanton Ave., is a century-long tradition complete with rides, exhibits, horse racing and other highlights. The fair opened at 11 a.m.

A bevy of activities and events are scheduled in the coming weeks, including fireworks shows on Friday nights, children's rides, motocross shows, and plenty of fair fare.

Some culinary options of the deep-fried variety include Pop Tarts, Fruity Pebbles, watermelon, and pineapple upside-down cake.

Other foods will come on a stick, such as macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, and even pudding.

A kissing contest on June 29 will mark the fair's 101th anniversary with a kissing contest featuring couples kissing for 101 seconds -- along with other challenges such as kissing through cotton candy. There is a $100 grand prize.

The festivities also include a nightly concert lineup with comedian Weird Al Yankovic visiting the fairgrounds on July 5 and a blues festival on the Fourth of July.

Special promotion events for seniors and military personnel and other groups will be held throughout the fair's duration.

The fair runs through July 7 and is closed on Mondays.
