Mother Could Face Charges After Leaving Kids Unsupervised In Hayward

HAYWARD (KCBS) – A 32-year-old mother could face child neglect and drug charges after three of her children were found unsupervised in a hotel room in Hayward.

It all started with a 911 call from a liquor store on A Street near South Garden Avenue late Wednesday morning.

Hayward police Sgt. Mark Ormsby said the mother told a clerk she and her kids were being held against their will at a nearby hotel. Ormsby said investigators quickly found the woman's children, ages 2, 4 and 6, unattended in a hotel room.

"The 4 and 6-year-old were clothed, but the 2-year-old was found in a diaper, no clothes, no shoes with a rash on him, Ormsby said.

The children are okay physically and are now in the custody of County Family Services. Ormsby also said the woman admitted to being on drugs.

"There's no indication that there was a threat by anybody else," he said. "There's no indication that she was being held against her will or that her kids were being held at the hotel room. All this appears to be a figment of her imagination."

Ormsby said the woman also has a 13-year-old daughter, who was found at a relative's house. Police said they plan to interview her as part of their investigation.

The woman, whose name is not being released, is being held at a psychiatric facility for a 72-hour evaluation.
