Death Sentence Upheld For Former Millbrae Cop Who Killed 6
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- A federal appeals court has upheld the death sentence for a former Millbrae policeman who killed six people in 1983.
The court ruled against Anthony Sully on Tuesday.
Sully, who's 69, was an electrical contractor and a former Millbrae policeman.
Authorities say he became addicted to cocaine and invested in an escort service. In 1983, he killed four prostitutes, a woman drug dealer and a man who may have been a pimp.
Sully's appeal argued that his trial lawyer didn't investigate evidence that he was mentally ill.
But the court said that probably wouldn't have convinced a jury to spare his life. It noted evidence that Sully had tortured his victims for pleasure and mutilated their bodies.
