Larry Magid: Yahoo Introduces Streaming Video App For Mobile Devices

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Yahoo has introduced a new app that streams video to mobile devices called 'Yahoo! Screen', but with well established competitors already out there, the question is how will they differentiate themselves?

It works very well on the iPhone as I've already used it, which is actually surprising considering the small screen. On the left of your screen, you'll notice a number of icons or logos for companies or properties. Those are your choices that you get to choose from.

For instance you could choose Saturday Night Live (they have an exclusive deal with them), or you could watch content from Wired or ABC News. They have a deal with Viacom as well so you'll be set with clips from The Daily Show with John Stewart or The Colbert Report. Some of the logos can be a bit confusing and I don't recognize them all yet (V stood for Vogue apparently, but I didn't know that).

By and large it is well organized, but right now it's being rolled out on iPhones and iPads exclusively before coming to the Android platform. If you don't use Apple's products you can see a web version of Yahoo! Screen from your PC.

One warning though: If you have a data plan that's not unlimited, be careful how much video you do watch when you're connected via the cellular network because the meter could be running. It's best to do when you're connected to Wi-Fi.
