Toddler Falls Into Vallejo Creek While Fishing With Grandmother
VALLEJO (CBS SF) -- A toddler was in critical condition Saturday evening after falling into a Vallejo creek during a fishing trip with his grandmother, a fire official said.
Firefighters received a report around 4 p.m. that a child had fallen into a creek that runs along Fairgrounds Drive near the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, said Battalion Chief Cliff Campbell.
When they arrived on the scene, a woman told them she had been fishing with her grandson when he had fallen into the water.
"She told us that she usually ties a rope around his waist when she fishes down there because he's only 2 years old," Campbell said. "She had not done that yet and she turned around for a minute and he fell into the water."
The grandmother was unable to reach the boy because she could not swim, but firefighters were able to quickly locate him in a drainage culvert that ran below where she had been fishing, Campbell said.
The boy is thought to have been in the water around 10 to 15 minutes.
Firefighters were able to get a pulse at the scene and at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo, and the boy was being prepared for a transfer to Children's Hospital in Oakland in critical condition as of earlier Saturday evening, Campbell said.
