Officer, Suspect Hurt In SJ Police Car Crash; Security Guard Stops Fleeing Suspect

SAN JOSE (KCBS) - A San Jose police officer was injured Friday morning after his patrol car was rear ended at a downtown intersection, police said.

The officer was stopped at a red light at San Carlos and Almaden Boulevard and San Carlos Street at about 5:45 a.m. when the suspect's vehicle, traveling at high rate of speed, slammed into the back the of the patrol car sending it into the center of the intersection.

The suspect, who was arrested, tried to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by a private security guard.

Both the officer and the suspect driver of the other car suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported to a hospital, San Jose police Sgt. Jacqueline Lonero said

Lonero said it was too early in the investigation to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved.

The intersection was closed due to the investigation but was reopened by 7:45 a.m.
