Daily Madden: 49ers' Loss Is Raiders' Gain

OAKLAND (KCBS) - Cornerback Carlos Rogers, released by the 49ers to save money, has signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders.

"I think it's a good pickup in many respects for the Raiders," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "It's good to get some veteran players. We know that the draft is coming up and they're going to get their young players in."

Rogers is 32.

"You can never have too many corners. The way football is today, with multiple receivers [and] offenses using multiple receivers, you need multiple corners or defensive backs. And then when you get them from a good team, when they come from a good program, I think that's big. A guy comes in and he knows what it takes to win because he's been with teams that have won."

The 49ers now appear to be short-handed in cornerbacks, and one of them, Chris Culliver, is facing felony hit and run and weapons possession charges. But Madden said the 49ers defense is still formidable.

"They have a great front four, and I don't know that their back end has ever been the strength of their defense anyway," Madden said. "The strength of their pass defense is the front, not the back." (6:55)
