Sonoma Sheriff's SWAT Team And Bomb Squad Respond To Gunfire, Man Arrested

SONOMA COUNTY (CBS SF) Two men were arrested this morning in the Larkfield area of Sonoma County after deputies said they heard one of the men fire a shotgun.

Deputies were in the area of Old Redwood Highway and Fulton Road around 12:40 a.m. when they heard gunfire coming from the 100 block of Donna Drive, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they approached a residence and saw through a window a man reloading a double-barrel shotgun.

The man, later identified as Arnold Colwell, 54, was ordered out of the residence and taken into custody.

Deputies said Colwell left the shotgun inside the residence.

Deputies said a second man, identified as Salvadore Mendez, 43, was also seen inside the residence, but he refused to come out.

After failed attempts to order Mendez out of the residence, the Sheriff's Office Special Operations Unit, consisting of SWAT members, hostage negotiators, bomb squad members and communications support staff, was called to the scene around 1:40 a.m.

Mendez exited the home around 4:10 a.m. and was taken into custody, according to the sheriff's office.

Colwell was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm and Mendez was arrested for an outstanding DUI warrant.
