Nationwide Recall Of Baby Wipes Issued Over Bacteria Concerns

McELHATTAN, Penn. (CBS SF) -- A Pennsylvania firm has issued an nationwide recall of baby and feminine wipes of various brands because some packages may contain bacteria.

Nutek Disposables initiated the recall over the weekend for the wipes under the brand names Cuties, Diapers.com, Femtex, Fred's, Kidgets, Member's Mark, Simply Right, Sunny Smiles, Tender Touch, and Well Beginnings.

The wipes were distributed before October 21 to retail outlets Walgreens, Sam's Club, Family Dollar, Fred's, and Diapers.com.

The company said after receiving complaints about odor and discoloration, testing showed the presence of a bacteria known as Burkholderia cepacia in some of the products.

According to the company, the B. cepacia bacteria poses little medical risk to healthy people but others with weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to infection.

Nutek said reports of rash, irritation, infections, fever, gastro-intestinal issues, and respiratory issues by users have not been confirmed to be related to the use of the wipes.

Consumers who have purchased the wipes can return them to the place of purchase for a refund.

The company has set up a consumer hotline at 1-855-646-4351, Monday through Friday, 10 AM – 4 PM EDT.
