Will Bay Area Taxpayers Foot The Bill For Newly-Added Super Bowl 50 Events?
SANTA CLARA (KCBS)— Santa Clara officials have unveiled a dozen additional events leading up to the 2016 Super Bowl at Levi's Stadium, but taxpayers could end up footing the bill.
That's because the new events are not included in the original Super Bowl plan and budget, according to the San Jose Mercury News. If the city's fund raising efforts to cover the costs of the additional events falls short, the remaining money could come from a city fund that pays for infrastructure improvements such as sidewalk repairs and sewer line maintenance.
The newly-announced city festivities will be headlined by a parade fireworks extravaganza and will cost around $2 million.
Super Bowl 50 organizers have raised $40 million to fund a week of events throughout the Bay Area, but the Santa Clara-based festivities are not part of that original Super Bowl plan and budget.
Super Bowl Host Committee officials say they will work with the city to help them find funding sources for the additional events.
The Santa Clara City Council is set to approve its slate of events and the hiring of a private fundraiser on Tuesday.
