When Was The Last Time It Was This Warm In January?

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.

Q: Is our current weather pattern, which is producing unseasonably warm weather, is unusual?

A: While we are experiencing above average temperatures, the San Francisco Bay Area was recording mild to warm temps and extremely dry conditions just one year ago. I vividly remember, the huge dome of high pressure sitting offshore and encompassing the entire state of California. We were not only experiencing the lack of rain, but offshore winds were creating fire danger.

One year ago today, Red Flag Warnings were posted through out the Bay Area. So, in the pre-dawn hours, I scheduled an interview for our KPIX 5 Morning Newscast with Captain Dickey from the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department to discuss our current weather pattern.

Then… I fell down.

I broke my hand in 3 places (metacarpal bones). On the bright side, its was a lucky "break" to have a Fire Captain "on hand" when hurting myself. I was rushed to the hospital and I never thought about the weather on January 7, 2014 again. Until today.

Fast forward one year later, my hand is fine and fully navigating my computer mouse over long range computer models in search of any signs to bust out of this current weather pattern. Thursday (tomorrow) will bring cooler and cleaner air to the Bay Area.  If all falls into place,  rain is slated to return on Saturday, January 18.

Have I mentioned how breaking  bones has made me a better Weathercaster? I'll save that for another blog!
