Police Investigate Sexual Assault At San Francisco State University

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - San Francisco State University officials are reaching out to students and staff following a sexual assault on campus early Thursday morning.

A female student called police to report the incident at about 12:45 a.m. She said a male suspect in his late 20s grabbed her and dragged her into the bushes near Burk Hall. She said the suspect pressed a sharp object into her side and then proceeded to grope her, before fleeing the scene.

"Men and women should be able to move about the campus alone so it's unacceptable what has happened here," said Luoluo Hong, SFSU vice president of student affairs and enrollment management. "At the same time, we're trying to let students know, there are steps they can take. The bottom line is,no matter what, nobody ever is in a position to be blamed for their assault."

University officials describe the suspect as a man in his late 20s who is 5 feet 7 inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a gray hoodie-style sweatshirt and blue jeans at the time of the incident.

Hong said the university sent out an email blast about the assault, and is asking anyone with information about the attack to come forward. Many female students on campus said they take precautions, especially when walking on campus at night.

San Francisco State University does offer an escort program at night and school officials said an app called Circle of 6, where friends and family can be accessed quickly in the event of a threat, is also helpful.
