10-Year-Old Shoots Her 8-Year-Old Sister With Gun Belonging To Sheriff's Deputy

FRESNO (CBS SF) -- A ten-year-old girl is suspected of shooting her younger sister, who is only 8, in Fresno early Friday, using the service weapon assigned to a county sheriff's deputy.

Fresno TV stations report the older sister took her father's loaded handgun from the bedroom and shot her sibling accidentally somewhere in the lower part of her torso.

Later, the Madera County Sheriff's Department confirmed to FOX26 that the man is a deputy and it was his service weapon.

62 children die each year from accidental shootings, with hundreds more injured according to Centers for Disease Control data for a four year period studied by EveryTown.org.

The Fresno girl is in stable condition and expected to survive.
