Facebook Shuttle Bus Drivers Approve Union Contract With Health Care, Wages At $21-$28.50 An Hour
MENLO PARK (CBS SF) – Shuttle drivers who take Facebook employees to and from work have reportedly approved a union contract offering higher pay and more benefits, a victory in organized labor's effort to unionize workers in Silicon Valley.
The Silicon Valley Business Journal reported the drivers, who are affiliated with the Teamsters and work for Loop Transportation, approved the contract in a unanimous vote.
With the new contracts, drivers would see their wages rise to a range between $21 and $28.50 an hour, up from $17 an hour. Their new benefits would include up to five weeks of paid vacation, nine days of sick leave, along with healthcare benefits for workers and family of full-time employees.
"I hate to spook the tech industry, getting them to think we're running to organize everything, but these workers will see the value of representation and want their little piece of the pie," Rome Aloise of the Teamsters told the Business Journal.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the contract still needs to be finalized by Loop Transportation and Facebook.
The vote by Facebook driver comes ahead of Friday's vote by drivers of Compass Transportation, who are also looking to unionize. Compass drivers shuttle employees who work for Apple, Yahoo, Zynga and Genentech.
