9 Tweets That Capture Will Ferrell's Brief Career As An Oakland Athletic

MESA, Ariz. (CBS SF) -- The Oakland A's spring training routine got a jolt Thursday from comedian Will Ferrell and his attempt to play in 10 positions for 10 teams in five different Cactus League games in one day.

Ferrell's stunt is in collaboration with Major League Baseball, HBO, and comedy website Funny or Die in a project to raise funds for fighting cancer. The event also honors former Athletic Bert Campaneris' historic feat of playing every position on the field during a game for the then-Kansas City A's 50 years ago.

Hohokam Stadium, the A's spring training facility in Mesa, Arizona, is where Ferrell began his day-long effort which involved changing the start times of some of the games to accommodate Ferrell's barnstorming tour across Cactus League games.

"In celebrating the 50-year anniversary of Campy Campaneris' unique feat, we are thrilled to recognize one of our great icons and our rich history with one of today's biggest celebrities," said A's president Michael Crowley in a press statement. "This fun event will be another great example of how baseball makes connections across generations."

Ferrell will auction off his game-used equipment to raise money for groups involved in fighting cancer. HBO will air a wrap of the event in later this year.

The Saturday Night Live veteran began the stunt by playing shortstop for the A's in the top of the first. Nobody hit a ball his way.

1:10 p.m. Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Tempe Diablo Stadium)
