Bay Area Universities Among Best For Landing 'Desirable' Job, LinkedIn Data Finds

(CBS SF) -- Using their vast databank, LinkedIn ranked colleges and universities based on graduates who get "desirable" jobs.

Stanford was listed as the number one undergraduate program for software developers at startups. Berkeley ranked fifth in the same category.

Bay Area universities fared better for graduate programs. San Jose State University ranked third for best graduate programs for designers. University of California, Berkeley ranked second for media professionals, and Stanford's graduate school ranked first for software developers at startups.

The LinkedIn ranking system determines which companies were most desirable by analyzing the career choices of over 300 million members worldwide. If a member leaves one company to work at another company, the second company is considered by LinkedIn to be more desirable. The company that does the best job of keeping its employees from leaving is also folded into the equation.

It all comes together in a list of the top 25 institutions in each career category, with filters for the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The jobs were categorized for accounting professionals, designers, finance professionals, investment bankers, marketers, media professionals, software developers, and software developers at startups.

Last fall, LinkedIn also released the University Finder -- a search engine for colleges based on a student's interest in a possible career. Students can search based on what they'd like to study, the employer they'd like to work for and where they'd want to live. The site then delivers popular schools for that specific career goal.
