San Leandro Man Crashes Car Into Building
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A 76-year-old man suffered moderate injuries after he drove his car into a building in San Leandro Saturday morning, leaving the building with a gaping hole on one side, according to fire officials.
Alameda County Fire Department crews responded at 8:14 a.m. to a report of a traffic collision requiring a rescue in the 1500 block of Clarke Street, fire officials said.
Arriving firefighters found a car almost entirely inside a single-story building.
"The vehicle was completely submerged in the building," Battalion Chief Alan Evans said.
Firefighters found a man unconscious inside the vehicle and fire officials said crews spent roughly 20 minutes removing the patient from the vehicle and the building.
Fire officials said the patient was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.
The building wasn't occupied at the time of the incident, fire officials said.
There were however, a large number of boxes and other items in the building that fell over as a result of the crash. Fire officials said crews dispatched a rescue dog named Gunner to search the building.
No other patients were located, fire officials said.
The dog was dispatched as a precaution, Evans said.
"(The building) had a lot of storage stuff in there and since the dog was on duty, they went and got the dog just for safety in case someone was inside the building at the time of the event," Evans said.
A San Leandro Building and Safety Services inspector responded to the scene and decided to restrict further entry into the building, fire officials said. PG&E shut off the power to the building.
San Leandro police determined the crash was accidental, fire officials said.
