Passenger Shot Aboard San Francisco Muni T-Line In Bayview District

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— A victim is in critical condition after one passenger shot another in an altercation on a Muni Light Rail Vehicle midday Monday, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Muni officials received reports of the shooting at 12:23 p.m. on a T-Third light-rail vehicle near Third Street and Palou Avenue, according to SFMTA Spokesman Paul Rose. Rose initially said police activity appeared to be at Third and Palou streets.

Police initially reported that the victim, shot in the face, was a 20-year-old San Francisco man, but said Tuesday that he is in fact a 19-year-old resident of Vallejo. Police said the victim was taken to a hospital's intensive care unit following the shooting.

After the shooting, the male suspect fled the light-rail vehicle into a busy intersection nearby and has not yet been identified or arrested, police said. According to police, a few people were detained at the scene, but at the time it was unclear if they were involved.

San Francisco police spokeswoman Grace Gatpandan said there were numerous witnesses to the shooting, but so far the suspect is described only as a man between 18 and 25 years old who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and baggy pants.

Rose said it is a rare occurrence for a shooting to happen on a Muni train, but that there is video evidence of the crime.

"We have about eight to 12 cameras per vehicle," said Rose.

Police said investigators are reviewing the Muni vehicle's video surveillance footage and other cameras in the area for more information about the suspect.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Officers are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to call the Police Department's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to text a tip to 847411 with "SFPD" in the message.
